In an increasingly bad tempered game Robbie Neilson was fortunate not to be sent off for a bad challenge on Roland Edge

Hibs were out the cup and Moscow Dynamo were on a winter break so why not ?

Dynamo were a decent side and got to the semi-final of the ECWC in this season

What I remember of the game is that the Dynamo defenders could not handle the power and pace of the force that was Gordon Juke Box Durie who fired in two first-half goals on a cold Friday night

This game was a real old-fashioned Cup tie with a lot of good football particularly from Hibernian with Rangers indulging in brutal play

Hibs took the lead to the great joy of their large travelling support when Willie Smith scored Rangers were rattled and they became even wilder when a Barney Breslin free-kick found it’s way into the Ibrox net to renewed manifestations of delight from the HIBS support

Rangers were stung into action and their brutal play was being ignored by the Referee Rangers pulled a goal back and the Referee gave them their obligatory penalty but the spot kick was blasted over the bar

The Referee continued to protect Rangers into the second half and they got their equaliser Hibernian’s play however had been superior and they were determined not to let this match slip from their grasp

It is now that ‘Darling’ Willie Groves grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck going on one of his old mazy runs the Rangers defence hacked and kicked at him and ‘almost killed him’ but with his last ounce of strength he put Hibernian back into the lead with a glorious goal that he managed to steer over the goal-line

The action was not over however and you guessed it the weak Referee - Mr McArthur of Stirling- awarded Rangers another soft penalty but this time HIBS’ goalkeeper Pat McCall pulled off a brilliant save to finally knock the stuffing out of Rangers

After the match the Rangers goalkeeper Bell got changed walked down the Copeland Road and was never seen or heard of again

I've been to Clydebank and it wasn't somewhere I associated with large attendances. We must have taken a fair amount of fans through that day.

We took a huge support. Remember we had won the LC less than 4 months earlier & we were developing a reputation as cup specialists. Unfortunately we lost to Airdrie at home in the 1/4 final. IIRC Tommy McIntyre missed a pen at 0 0. That was my 12th year in London & incredibly, first time I saw us lose in that period, i reckon close to 100 games.

What I remember was the weird 6 floodlight pylons, the terracing behind the goals was heap of dirt ,no steps or anything . There was a huge Hibs crowd through with buses lining the streets around the ground.

There were here a lot of bombed out buildings that had not been rebuilt yet after the Clydebank blitz.
Mind you it was only 20 years after the war finished, makes you feel ancient :greengrin

Remember it well. They were named ES Clydebank then as they had taken over East Stirling's place. Think crowd was about 15k & it may still be the ground record.

Mick IIRC our attendance at Livi for the game you mention above was either 10,008 or 10,016. I remember thinking that as the official capacity was 10,000 we would never lose that record. A few weeks later Rangers were there & crowd was shown as 10,024!!

Aberdeen were on a high after drawing 2-2 with the mighty Bayern Munich in midweek and took the lead through Zander Diamond after 18 minutes

Merouane Zemmama equalised on 49 minutes with a free-kick following a Diamond foul on Colin Nish kissing the ball before dispatching it past Jamie Langfield from 25 yards

HIBS now had their tails up and Dean Shiels scored from a tight angle after being put clean through on goal by Steven Fletcher his first attempt having been saved by Langfield

Hibs just managed to squeeze past Stirling Albion at fog bound Forthbank

The home side took a shock lead when Chris Templeman fired a left footed strike past Nick Colgan from 20 yards after 4 minutes

Mixu Paatelainen then had a header brilliantly saved by ex Easter Road incumbent Chris Reid HIBS drew level on 10 minutes when Russell Latapy was tripped outside the box Referee John Rowbotham waved a red at Kevin Gaughan through the fog and Le God curled the ball around the wall into the net

HIBS took the lead when John O’Neil fired home David Zitelli’s low left wing cross after 26 minutes

Stirling Albion were far from done however and equalised when Franck Sauzee pulled John Millar down in the box in the 54th minute and Ally Graham fired home high past Colgan

Hibs stepped up the pressure and found Chris Reid to be in superb form bringing off two excellent saves from Paul Fenwick no less

I can still feel the sense of massive disappointment when the PA announced before kick off that #11 would be Willie Murray

15000 like minded souls had gathered (and it seemed like more) for a Sunday afternoon Scottish Cup tie in the days before wall to wall live streaming and Sky Sports

This was of course the weekend of his infamous drinking session with the French Rugby team and George Best would be put up for sale in the morning

The match itself was a good old fashioned competitive Cup tie with Ayr United putting up a good show played in the best spirit of the game with Duncan Lambie and Ally MacLeod scoring either side of half-time

Ayr had some decent players Steve Nicol, Robert Connor and Jim McSherry indeed Robert Connor is still convinced to this day that a first half strike that cannoned off the underside of the crossbar bounced miles over the line

Remember that well. Particularly as my family are Arabs. We didn't get a lot of victories against them at the time and it would have been great to stick it up them.

The win against Aberdeen 3 years ago when we remembered Liam Miller is one of my favourite memories from the Lennon era. We absolutely battered them.

I remember it as Benny attempting a pass back to the keeper to keep possession, that went out, rather than him putting it out.
He got yet more stick for years and years. If he hadn't attempted the pass back, he could have booted it, out lost possession anyway, and still get slaughtered by the hoardes. It was part of being Benny I suppose, I loved him.

30000 fans turned up at Easter Road many expecting an upset and to witness Hibernian take on little Berwick Rangers who had knocked out big Rangers at home in the previous round

Many were to leave disappointed as Jim Scott scored the only goal of the game just before half-time
Berwick Rangers’ goalkeeper and Captain Jock Wallace saved a Jim Scott penalty in the latter stages of the match

Berwick had fought bravely but in truth were never in the match and kicked everything that moved HIBS were the better side and had the bulk of the play but Berwick thought they had scored when Thomson Allan clawed away a ball that appeared to have crossed the line half way through the first half

Jim Scott scored with a speculative shot from 20 yards that Wallace appeared to have covered but miscalculated the flight of the ball went down like a carthorse and the ball flew into the empty net

Eric Stevenson relates in his biography that Jock Wallace had told his marker Gordon Haig “ If Stevie goes for a piss at half-time you go with him”

Berwick Rangers left the field of play to a standing ovation in recognition of a gallant cup run in which they had showed determination and true grit but had also played some good football and did not look out of place against higher League opposition

I’m afraid there was no sporting ovation from my part of the ground at the Berwick game! Not only was every tackle a foul but there was a huge amount of off the ball stuff to try and intimidate us which was quite unusual in domestic football then. My memory(probably faulty)is that they had one attempt at goal which was deflected and Thomson Allan had a good save followed by an attempt to kick him as he pulled the ball from the line .

Home game memories usually involved drink, during floodlight games, versus European teams .

Good memories of Hibernian showing the Continentals and the English that we could play a bit

Hibs consolidated their position in third place with this fine win over Dundee. Jim Duffy’s side had Tam McManus making his return to Easter Road

Hibs struggled to find their rhythm and twice Dundee forward Steve Lovell came close to scoring. Hibs made the breakthrough however just before half-time when a high ball over the top found Derek Riordan bearing down on goal and although Derek Soutar did well to parry his initial shot Garry O’Connor came rushing in from the angle of the six yard box to fire home

HIBS increased their lead two minutes into the second half. Steven Whittaker ran in from deep his first touch was exquisite as he knocked the ball past his opponent before lashing the ball high into the net with a right footed shot

Dundee had decent chances to get back into the game but these chances were squandered by McManus and Lovell. They would live to regret those chances as a double in two minutes from Steven Fletcher and Garry O’Connor effectively ended the game as a contest

I had a conversation with him about that. I think one of the things was Eddie felt he set out to injure him. It wasn't a an unlucky tackle. You are right, he never forgave him and wouldn't even talk about Ferguson and his accomplishments as a manager.

You're spot on there Michael. Ned loathed Stein. The Fergie incident was made worse by the ref (who i cant remember) indicating that Crops was play acting & he didn't stop the game. Crops dragged himself off while the game carried on. On a happier note yet another Roy of the Rovers moment from Joe B. Back from injury, on as sub & he scored the winner with an outrageous diving header.

Ned told the story that after defeating Celtic at Pittodrie he could hear Jock Stein’s limping footsteps trying to catch up with him in the tunnel. He slowed down to let him catch up.

“ Aye ye beat us but you’ll no try as hard against that other mob.”

Turnbull replied that he was wrong and that he was happy to beat them both any day of the week

Pretty sure that ET was part of Jock Stein’s Coaching Staff for Scotland and he became good friends with Jock Wallace as we had a couple of ‘friendlies’ against Leicester City and Seville :greengrin

Turnbull and Tam McNiven were part of Stein’s Scotland set up for a while.

Not sure Eddie loathed Stein, I just think he saw him as a fierce rival. He knew he had been a much better player and believed he was the equal of anyone in terms of management.

No matter the situation he was calmness personified able to weigh things up immediately taking instant command showing poise and vision strolling through the game in a way probably not seen in a HIBS strip since the days of Pat Stanton

Paul Hartley put HIBS ahead just before half time Marino Keith equalised on 52 minutes for the Bairns A minute later goalscorer Paul Hartley got a rush of blood to the head and saw red

Hibs were now up against it but Franck Sauzee now played our ‘ get out of jail card’ flicking the ball sideways to the unlikely attacking figure of Derek Collins whose shot from outside the box was deflected high and looped over the goalkeeper’s head before resting in the Falkirk pokey

In his book, Crops doesn't say too much about it. Tbf, he didn't know much, as it came from behind. But he shies away from calling out Fergie, instead describing him as "a troublesome and awkward player with not much skill, and a real nightmare to play against "

Hibs were drawn against current Champions Rangers and red hot favourites to win the Scottish Cup at the Holy Ground

35000 squeezed into the ground and it was a sea of green

Rangers had the better of the first half and even when they took the lead the non stop encouragement from the Stands did not cease and as the first half came to a close Jimmy Hendren hit the equaliser following a beautiful pass from young Bobby Wilson

Early in the second half the Irishmen stamped their authority on the match when Willie Smith put them ahead with an unsaveable shot.

Hibs took complete control of the game outplaying the highly fancied Rangers as they passed their way into the next round of the Cup the dejected Rangers players unable to win decent possession

The match ended in a crescendo of noise and wild celebration

Hibs would reach the Scottish Cup Final in this season but would lose out in a replay to Celtic

Always thought he should have been in the full squad earlier than he was.

Only 5 and 6 years ago and just over 8k at ER. Our cup triumph totally changed our club.

Here Billy none of this trendy wing-back stuff-Eddie had moved to wing half in 1958 and was still good enough to play at the World Cup in Sweden when he made the journalists select team for the group stage. As you rightly say-the end of an era-interesting that Joe Baker played with all the members of the Famous Five in that couple of years.

Aitken,Fox and Gibson -all fine players but only Davy Gibson had the career they should all have had. Aitken of course never fully recovered from being crocked by Clinton in the cup final which was on top of being carried off at Easter Road a few months before that -Clinton kneed him in the back that time.

Grant Holt increased HIBS’ lead when he flicked a reverse pass from Cummings beyond the advancing Hearts keeper

Into the second half and fifth minute Substitute for Chris Humphrey Shinnie who was having a great game fired a ball straight through the Hearts goalkeeper Jack Hamilton from 22 yards to put HIBS three up on 66 minutes

Hearts scored a late penalty when Goncalves who had been brought down inside the box by Darren McGregor ( allegedly) converted the award at the third attempt when he bundled the ball over the line

Darren McGregor then had what appeared to be a perfectly good goal disallowed when he headed in a free-kick unchallenged at the back post

The mighty Barcelona came to Easter Road for the second leg of the Inter Cities Fairs Cup Quarter Final

The first leg in the Nou Camp had finished 4-4

Easter Road was packed with 45000 fans for what was a memorable match Hibs winning 3-2 on the night

Joe Baker put HIBS ahead after ten minutes when he headed home a Johnny MacLeod free-kick

After HIBS’ bright start Barcelona came more and more into the game and it was no surprise when Martinez equalised after 27 minutes beating Simpson to an Evaristo cross and firing the ball under him
The Spaniards were now going in top gear and took the lead two minutes from the break Kocsis received the ball in the HIBS box with his back to goal he half turned and sent a low shot past two sprawling defenders into the net

Second half and HIBS now shooting down their favoured slope really went at Barcelona

Immediately Joe Baker was pulled down inside the box looking for all the world a penalty but the German Referee only gave an indirect free-kick inside the box

Barcelona then missed a goalden chance to increase their lead when they broke away Suarez’s shot cannoned off Simpson’s chest fell to Martinez who inexplicably fired past the open goal sending the ball into orbit

Once again Baker head down raced into the Barca box only to be bounced off the ball and sent sprawling over the goal-line to be met by the same result indirect free kick to HIBS inside the box Ormond took the kick but it was scrambled clear

The equaliser came when a corner from Ormond was swung well away from the goalkeeper Sammy Baird headed it on into the box the heads went up and the ball ended up in the Barca net

The last man to pick himself up from the fallen melee of players in the box was Tommy Preston

Five minutes to go and all hell let loose Johnny MacLeod was pulled down inside the box and the Referee that had denied HIBS two stonewall penalties immediately pointed to the spot

The Referee was surrounded by irate Barcelona players who pushed and shoved him

The Referee retreated to the half way line The police went on the pitch to protect him and all the while he kept pointing to the penalty spot

This went on for some five minutes the coolest man in the Stadium was Bobby Kinloch who all this while sat on the ball in the penalty box patiently waiting on things to calm down

Once order had been restored he simply cracked the ball into the net

This triggered wild celebrations around the Stadium and the Referee was once again surrounded by Barcelona players

The Referee blew the final whistle five minutes later when he was conveniently positioned near the tunnel before being pursued by angry Barca players who more than left their mark for many years to come on the Changing Room door
