I'm just going on the basis that Yousef has likely been given a steer on policy by the First Minister before commenting. Nicola Sturgeon will have access to the latest and most up to date modelling and if the government policy is still full reopening on 9th August hopefully it's not going to be too bad in terms of serious illness.

Yep, I’ve still got high hopes but it’s going to be far from a smooth road where 3 weeks from now we just open up without rules and that’s it, no problems anymore. The case numbers being this high is a big problem unless you stop asking people to even bother isolating when they might have covid which of course isn’t going to happen.

I was a bit concerned reading this part regarding the scientific modelling that's been done which the article refers to;

It added that the increase in cases in the last few days was "likely" to lead to an increase in hospitalisations and intensive care use, with "considerable uncertainty" in future weeks.

If they're right about 100,000 cases per week within the next two weeks then that's approaching 15,000 cases per day and I sincerely hope we're nowhere near that number.

If it gets to those numbers the whole country will have had it before the summers out. With the natural immunity and the vaccinations we'll be bulletproof :greengrin

I'm not particularly confident either. The point you make about NHS staff is an important one, that along with the huge backlog of people with other serious illnesses and various problems who haven't been treated spells difficulties for the health service. A friend tells me anecdotally that it's taken him fully five weeks to gain a GP appointment recently.

The lessons of the pandemic have been to expect continual twists in the road and a good few false dawns. To be cognisent of these things and to respect those facts is to be better prepared. To not let one's mood yo-yo between great hope and further despair, much more damaging that it is. It's not 'job done' because lots of people have been vaccinated or a return to 'normal' at this stage. Better in my humble opinion not to think of developments in such binary terms.

Have WM or scotgov actually done anything to build the nhs over this pandemic? I keep hearing about protecting the nhs but surely the governments need to do more to help this?

There is pretty much no data on long covid. They have committed millions but that could be a drop in the ocean. We are at early stages of knowing about covid

Plus they reckon even at low numbers they only catch 50% of cases. At they numbers it will be much less. So by the end of summer would be close and that's without the immunity from vaccines

Ignoring the main point of the article which of course has nothing to do with Covid-19, the end of the article was interesting;

Meanwhile, clubs in the SPFL have been informed they no longer have to supply negative Covid-19 PCR tests for players and staff ahead of matches.

The clubs now are required only to submit lateral flow tests for players and staff involved on match days.

However, should any positive tests come from LFTs then a PCR NHS test must be taken.

Over the past year clubs have had to pay out up to £4,000 per week for PCR tests, with the results submitted to the SPFL.

That's a big change. I was wondering before this if any clubs would be pushing their players to get vaccinated

As you all know the rich don't get or pass covid. Boris and chums have said business leaders don't need to quarantine when coming into the UK. They are very important people unlike family members who haven't seen each other in a year ect

Yup 100%... my daughter, 18 at the time caught covid last April, pretty much shrugged it off at that point then over time began to tire easily until she was almost unable to do anything at all without being exhausted and needing bed rest, was off work a few months, this is her 1st full week of work since before Christmas.

Daily Scottish update;

3,118 new cases since yesterday - 11.6% positivity rate
Increase of 13 in the confirmed cases in hospital since yesterday
No change in the confirmed cases in intensive care since yesterday
3,781,887 people have now received their first dose of the vaccine - 16,508 people since yesterday
