Bishop of Durham on Newsnight now, totally baffled. It breaks normal parliamentary procedure because the HoL of which he is a part, was about to vote on the subject.
I’m starting to think the Tories are learning lessons from the Republicans across the Atlantic. Previous Norms of behavior are now out the window. Is the centre right even a thing anymore :dunno:
I need to spend a lot more time analysing the detail of this policy, but it's bizarre and raises so many questions. Will everyone who arrives without a visa be sent to Rwanda: asylum seekers, refugees and economic migrants? Why Rwanda? How was this agreement reached? What will Rwanda do with those denied entry to the UK? What are the legalities of doing this?
Rwanda because all other countries asked said no, they will get paid. They basically get kept in a possessing centre like they would here, until their case comes up. I assume it will be legal unfortunately. 1.5 billion a year to do it. They say its just a deterrent and everyone will stop coming. But they are already risking death to come on a boat
We seem to be copying every mental right wing policy from around the world in a desperate attempt to distract from the PMs troubles and keep the papers onside.
Australia has been doing something similar for years. As well as the horrendous human rights issues, it's a massive waste of tax payers money. Last year they spent £461m on their off shore processing. This was for just 239 people. So nearly £2m per year, per person.
6000 miles to Rwanda, estimated this ‘scheme’ will cost several billion a year.
That picture of Patel says it all. And the timing, throw red meat at the gammons just before May elections which let’s be honest make up a fair amount of the Tory support.
It makes you ashamed of this country but then you must remember it’s THIS government we should be ashamed of. The worst ever.
Sending people fleeing from persecution to a dictatorship that violates human rights is a new low, even for this government.
The Tories really have zero compassion.
I wonder if they'll get orange jump suits, or will they have union flag ones.
Lets by honest, this policy is all about shoring up the racist vote.
They aren't going to be sending white Irish, Australian or New Zealanders who've overstayed their visa requirements to Rwanda for processing. But 'sending them back to Africa' is going to play well with some of the new Boris core voters.
Its like Windrush didnt happen.
Wilf took his dad to a wildlife park yesterday for a nice 'cuddly Boris' photo opp. Luckily, the Daily Mail were on hand to shoot it all for the nation. Annoyingly, the wildlife keepers were loath to let Boris out of the park once captured.

Couldn't they just say they are Russian and put up the necessary £2m and get instant access to the UK then once they are in quickly assimilate by making donations to the Tory Party via the usual channels? You know breakfast, dinner or whatever with Bozo plus the odd game of tennis for a couple of hundred grand.
Maybe non Dom is the way to go?

Sources tell us they believe the PM will be fined for three events the Met is yet to examine - a leaving do for a senior aide, the summer BYOB party and the “Abba” gathering in his flat. We understand no one has yet been fined for these events

I've just realised that the migrants aren't being 'processed' in Rwanda but being sent there with no opportunity to return. They will be processed and if successful remain in Rwanda with the same 'rights' as a Rwandan.
Basically we are paying to deport them to a foreign country.
Twilight zone stuff

Those entering the UK illegally, as well as those who have arrived illegally from 1 January, will now be relocated to Rwanda, the PM says.
This will provide "safe and legal routes" for asylum whilst "disrupting the business models of the gangs", he adds
Already correctly identified by HIGNFY.
Responding to the announcement that the UK Government intends to send people to Rwanda for asylum processing, STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer said:
“The UK Government have revealed to all and sundry the extent of their, frankly, evil and hostile approach to those seeking asylum and sanctuary across the country. They’re also showing the depths they’re willing to sink to in a desperate attempt to distract the public from their flagrant lawbreaking.
“We see through them. We won’t allow the Tories to use asylum seekers as a political smokescreen to cover up their failings as a rogue government.
“This is a sickening, inhumane arrangement; one that trades human beings for cash to a country with such a grim track record on human rights. This will only exasperate the wide range of abuse that occurs to those currently going through the UK Government’s asylum process.
“Along with our equality committees, we reaffirm our position that Scotland welcomes refugees. We stand side by side with all those who are subject to this sadistic policy and would call for its immediate rejection.
Sums it up nicely
