Another thing that annoys me about train fares is the non-uniformity of what is a peak or off-peak ticket. Generally off-peak on weekdays after 9.15am but if your service leaves from Waverley, Haymarket, Central or Queen Street to certain destinations, there's evening restrictions between 16.42 and 18.11 but for some reason the 17.59 train from Edinburgh to Glasgow Central is excluded from this (admittedly it takes an hour and a half). Then the 18.15 trains in either direction from Waverley/QS are included, likewise with 18.35 Waverley to Aberdeen.
Its so confusing. Just make it a standard time.
Also, the pricing of stations in Edinburgh is stupid too. I live near both South Gyle and Edinburgh Park stations. Edinburgh Park to Waverley is more expensive than South Gyle to Waverley, despite taking the exact same time. I would love an Edinburgh day ticket (or return ticket) on the train too. So I could maybe go into the City Centre from South Gyle but return on an Edinburgh Park service.
Edit: just checked something on the Edinburgh station prices too. I also live within walking distance of Edinburgh Gateway. That's comparatively substantially more expensive than South Gyle (£1) but is only one station away from it on the same line. Not all services stop at both stations so quite often if you put South Gyle to Waverley/Haymarket into the Scotrail app, it will tell you to get a train from S Gyle to Gateway and change train and it is the cheaper S Gyle to Waverley/Haymarket price. So someone going from Gateway to Waverley will pay £1 more than someone who has started at South Gyle, changed at Gateway and got on the same train as them to Waverley.
I've mentioned this before. It's mad that there is no one size fits all return ticket for all stations within the Edinburgh boundary.
I get the train from Brunstane a couple of times a month. Sometimes it's better for me to get the train to Edinburgh Park, other times South Gyle or Wester Hailes and the return likewise; it's not always uniform and not always the same station that I arrive and depart from. Despite them all being broadly the same distance and time if I do arrive and depart form different stations you have to buy 2 singles which almost doubles the price. As an example if I get a return to Edinburgh Park then it's £4.80. If I arrive to South Gyle but return from Edinburgh Park it's £8.10.
There seems mystery within government as to why we are miles away from meeting targets to reduce car usage but stuff like that will discourage people from using public transport. A standardised return fare within the boundaries of a small city, in relative terms, should be a no brainer. I suppose we have only had contactless on buses for a couple of years and tap on tap off is only just getting rolled out on trams now (about 10 years after TFL launched it in London) so we are probably a decade or 2 away from any further joined up thinking.
I've noticed this phrase appearing more and more in newspapers when reporting on certain events.
"...according to people familiar with the matter"
And that means what exactly? Somebody you chatted to in the pub, or on the number 27 bus?
