Presumably the year's extension had a deadline date in the contract. And this date would no doubt be a few months before the contract ends so that the player has the opportunity to find a new club whilst still under contract.
So Hibs trigger the extension clause to make sure that the player is tied in for at least another year.
This doesn't mean that a new contract is not still being discussed. So many factors to consider for both club and player.
The extension just creates breathing space and surety for both sides in the meantime.

The only part of me that sees reasoning in signing guys like Barron, Cameron, Mulligan is that it maybe allows them to ship out guys like Lawrence, Bajrami etc who are on serious wages.
