IIRC this was the only time I attended Broomfield: and what a dump it was. As befitting an Alex MacDonald team, Airdrie proceeded to kick Hibs up and down the park and, I think, got about 9 players booked! We also got a couple of bookings, including Mickey Weir, who then got booted at the edge of our box and went down. The ref, bizarrely, gave a foul to Airdrie and when they tried to take a quick one it hit the prone Weir in the midriff. The ref then reached for his pocket and we feared that Mickey was about to be sent off, but instead he booked the Airdrie player. Cue bedlam and hysterics amongst the Hibs fans.
I think this may also have been the game where Hibs were trying to do their post-match warmdown on the pitch and MacDonald told them to get off it! What a credit to football that man was!

That is some team, full of footballers.
I assume Des Bremner was playing in central defence, or did Stanton drop back? I remember Bremner as a right back and then as a central midfielder?
The week before at Broomfield Derek Spalding had gone off injured and Des Bremner had dropped back and been outstanding at Centre Back
Ally Macleod came on as a second half sub to take over from Bremner and made his debut in midfield at Airdrie

Am I right in thinking that by around about New Year O'Rourke Gordon & Duncan had scored over 100 goals.
The 100 goals in itself is a huge achievement but I am sure I have read the stat I refer to above before and thought WTF how is that even possible?
To answer your question, the answer is sadly never.
Glorious Glorious days that cemented a young boys love of football in general and Hibs in particular
Despite all the kickings receieved between the and now it has never faded and never will, it has waxed and waned but there are few feelings like a great Hibs win.
I was waiting for this one. My auld man had declined to take me through to Hampden the week before and I was totally gutted. He did take me to this game at Easter Road though. 5 goals to the good by half time, a precursor of things to come a few weeks later.
I have memories of the League Cup being displayed, but wonder if this is mixed up with another game where it went round on top of a lawnmower with a table attached to the front.
Great Gilzean cartoon in the news on the Monday that followed. Talking of which, I would love a compilation of these cartoons. Not sure that they are archived anywhere by the Evening News, but they would make for an awesome trip down memory lane for season 72-73.

Porteous 80
Hibs playing their third game in six days started with their two main strikers Jamie MacLaren and Florian Kamberi on the bench
Livingston who had swatted away Hearts 5-0 eight days previously were unchanged
After a tight first half in which either team could have taken the lead it was left to Scott Hardie 10 minutes into the second half to score his third goal in four games when he lobbed a Declan Gallagher pass over the advancing Bogdan
Hibs had an immediate chance to restore parity when Martin Boyle was hauled down inside the box but Florian Kamberi was unconvincing, lacking any confidence and Kelly made a routine save from his telegraphed spot kick
It was left to young Ryan Porteous playing through the pain barrier as he appeared to reset his damaged knee on more than one occasion to lead by example to stoop to head home a fine cross by Daryl Horgan to snatch the equaliser

This game brings us to the strange case of Jim Brogan
Brogan was one of the scorers in this match but this was to be his last game for the club
Brogan was a real asset to the club a prolific scorer who had scored six goals on his debut
The problem was that even although he was a Catholic he wasn’t practicing and refused to attend mass or join in any religious marches
After 3 months he left to join our arch rivals Hearts who were only too pleased to sign him but after only a few months there he was tempted by the professional game down south and joined Bolton Wanderers where he became a regular goalscorer
He was a good player and Catholic but he wasn’t Catholic enough for HIBS at that time
Brogan left Bolton in 1892 and worked in the shipyards until he was 85

Joe Baker scored the first when goalkeeper Ramillieta came to the edge of his box to clutch a long ball it fell from his grasp and the ever vigilant Joe Baker waltzed round the keeper and coolly slotted the ball into the empty net with his left foot
Things went from bad to worse for Barca in twenty minutes when Johnny MacLeod accepted a pass from Sammy Baird in midfield carried the ball swiftly into the unguarded centre and unleashed a cracking shot from 20 yards that beat Ramillieta all ends up
Cue a crescendo of boos and white hankies all around the Stadium
Barcelona pulled one back following a freekick and HIBS responded just before half-time when Baker struck the upright
Barcelona equalised eight minutes into the second half through Kocsis when he was left unmarked and was able to pick his spot with a header
HIBS continued to press forward and were denied a penalty when MacLeod was brought down inside the box five yards from goal
Hibs took the lead with 18 minutes to go when Tommy Preston rattled in a great left footer that went in off the upright Baker followed up three minutes later when he broke clear and smashed a 25 yarder that cannoned in off the post giving the keeper no chance
Barcelona were now getting the slow hand clap and were getting desperate

I was at the game when Tommy Preston was sent off. It was the first time I'd ever seen it happen so it was quite shocking. Of course this was long before cards and the refs used to have a huge rigmarole when booking a player. When it was seen that Preston was leaving the field there was a stunned silence.Gerry Mays was the Kilmarnock player involved. An inside forward-sometimes centre- he was a good player but it was thought that he had a grudge against Hibs because he'd been quite a few years at ER during the was but was released in 1946 without ever playing for the first team.Any time he played against Hibs he was well known for niggling fouls. In this game he slid in on Preston well after the ball had gone and as he got to his feet Preston pushed him over and was sent off for it. As usual with the SFA lack of interest in the paying customer fans never knew what was going on .Some refs would wave their book as a threat ,others could be writing a novel while still others would book a player without making it apparent and you would only find out when you read the paper. There was one well known story of the era when a player was booked and the ref said "off you go"meaning go back to your position but the player trotted off the park. Allegedly.

Cannae believe that 3-2 win over Dundee utd with Evans coming of the bench was nearly 30 years ago my god !!
Remember going into Robbie Bar after that game to be met by a typical knee jerker saying he had left early because Hibs were rubbish and he was’nt going back. The look on his face when I told him what had happened after he had left was a joy to behold.Typical Gareth Evans performance, one week he looked top quality the next you wondered why he bothered getting out of bed that morning. What was even more commendable for the Hibs comeback was for most of that game Duncan Ferguson was outstanding and unplayable for Dundee United.I am right in thinking Billy that Ferguson scored both United goals.A complete nutter but some player when he was fit.
’
Malpas's goal was a great individual effort, unlike his style of play in the early-1980s where he and his fellow defenders seemed to be having a competition of who can pass the ball back to Hamish McAlpine the most times.
It was about this time that Hibs went on a great run against Utd at Easter Road, lasting some years, which was great, as before then we really struggled against them. Also good, as it was around then I started meeting up before and after games with a colleague of mine who'd just moved down from Dundee and was a big Utd fan [emoji16]

Hibernian 3 v 0 Kilmarnock
Hanlon 12
Cairney 77
Stevenson 92
A minutes silence was held before kick-off as both teams paid tribute to Hibernian youth player David Paul
Hibernian would win at home for the first time since September and would prove to be too strong for Kilmarnock
Craig Samson in the Kilmarnock goal was in outstanding form as he kept out attempts from Cummings Stevenson and Robertson but he could do little about Paul Hanlon’s header from Cairney’s corner kick
Hibs continued to press forward but despite Robertson hitting the crossbar found Samson to be in outstanding form. Kris Boyd tested Ben Williams in a rare Kilmarnock foray forward
The quality of HIBS’ play was excellent throughout and they sealed the deal when Paul Cairney swept a ball into the bottom corner with a left foot shot after Kilmarnock struggled to clear a cross into the box deep into the second half
Lewis Stevenson who had recently made his 200th appearance for the club crowned a magnificent performance with an excellent stoppage time goal from 25 yards

My memory of this game is how baltic it was at Easter Road that day
Hibs took the lead when Leigh Griffiths latched onto a long Paul Hanlon ball to outstrip the Celtic defence and their keeper Fraser Forster to score from an incredibly tight angle. HIBS were then denied a stonewall penalty when Rogne blatantly handled an Eoin Doyle shot in the box
Both sides had plenty of chances and both keepers made some fine saves in particular Ben Williams who was under extreme pressure from the champions in the closing stages

You mention the weather at one game was 'Baltic'. I once went a holiday to the Baltic (Travemunde, in Germany), and the weather was so warm that the girls were all in bikinis (and some of the boys anaw, though let's not go there)!

Stanton

Gordon
Someone was going to ‘catch it’ and Aberdeen almost did here and the 3-2 scoreline definitely flattered them
Aberdeen’s new midfield wonderkid Zoltan Varga was totally eclipsed by HIBS’ own midfield maestro Alex Edwards
Pat Stanton and Jimmy O’Rourke were on the scoresheet but HIBS’ third goal was a thing of beauty
A pinpoint Alex Cropley pass sent Arthur Duncan scampering down the left touchline The Flyer fired over a waist high first time cross which was met by the horizontal figure of Alan Gordon. Gordon’s blonde head made perfect contact with the ball which flew past Bobby Clark in the Aberdeen goal
Alan Gordon later said that it was one of the best goals he ever scored The crowd certainly thought so as the team received a prolonged ovation as the players trotted back to the half way line
That goal put Alan Gordon into third place in the race for the Golden Boot behind Gerd Muller and Eusebio

OK cheers. I had a perfect view of that and couldn't believe my eyes. Similar to when Kevin McAllister was halfed (halved?) in the box in the first minute at Ibrox and the referee chose to ignore it.
