That comes to just under half a million people in Scotland. The SG's daily report shows just under 165,000 positive tests since the pandemic began, around a third of the number who now have antibodies. Assuming that antibodies from some earlier cases will have disappeared, that indicates to me that well over two thirds of people who've contracted the virus were asymptomatic (or at least weren't unwell enough to bother getting a test). Devastating for competitors who have been training in the expectation they would get their Olympic moment after they were cancelled last year. Given that the Games are only every four (or five!) years many will never get the opportunity again. It's a lot easier to feel sympathy for them than the Aussie Open tennis players moaning about being stuck in their hotel rooms.
You have to assume a lot of the year's other big sports events are under threat again.

Anyway, I broadly agree I think. Scotland's performance relative to other European countries was poor in the first wave but better than England's abysmal. It's been middling in the second wave, much better than England's abysmal.
I think Scotland initially relied far too heavily on the UK's pandemic preparedness (which as we know was targeted at a flu pandemic) and we were far too slow to see the writing on the wall from Italy and break with that strategy. And the care homes thing was dreadful.
However, if we're going to have Scotland-England comparisons then they should at least be accurate ones. The media narrative that NS has been a better communicator but the outcomes have been the same is simply not true.
I doubt there can be 100% certainty for any international sporting event right now. Even without crowds can a multi-city football tournament featuring big squads of players, officials etc flying around Europe really be justified? There are far more important global issues to address first.Quote:

My wife just Facetimed MIL and it turns out that after coming to look after the their grandsons while their parents went for a scan in Wishaw (all fair enough and above board), they took then took the boys away for a couple of nights until they come up to ours to look after my daughter while we go for a scan on Friday.
