Pet Peeves IV

Another one from me.

Groups of cyclists who think it's ok to ride 2 or 3 abreast on shared paths and make no effort whatsoever to give way to other path users.

I got the train out to Linlithgow yesterday early morning and ran back to Edinburgh along the Union Canal path. Pretty much from Linlithgow to Wester Hailes the path is narrow and really only allows for 2 people to pass, at some points were the trees and hedgerow are overgrown it can be closer to single file. I encountered a pair and a trio of cyclists who just would not budge an inch. By it's nature a canal has long stretches where you can see what's coming for quite a distance ahead. I saw these groups coming and working on the principle of 'keep to the left, pass to the right' I tucked myself right into the left hand and slowed up. This was in expectation they would show similar courtesy and slow up and drop into single file. Nope, they just kept tanking along, the 1st group actually caused me to fall as I tried to jump a small stone wall to get out their way. No apology, I'm not convinced they even registered I was there.

I'd add this was the behaviour of a minority but a minority of selfish ********s. There were other pairs and even groups of 7, 8 and 9 cyclists all capable of passing the walkers, runners and other single cyclists safely but these couple of groups were totally unwilling to show a bit respect for a shared path. It's the kind of bullying behaviour that the cycling lobby quite rightly calls out car drivers for. It's dangerous too, cyclist tanking along at speed could seriously injure people coming in the opposite direction if they collided. Thankfully my fall is only a few scratches, a small cut and a bruised ego.

I suppose it’s just a reflection of society…a percentage are always going to be selfish entitled *******.

The thing with these types of cyclists though is that, anecdotally, they often they seem to be the most bolshy when it comes to how they are treated by car drivers and the use of cycle lanes etc.

Hypocritical Lycra would be a great brand name for their daft outfits [emoji2957]

On the subject of cyclists - cyclists that use the road where there’s a cycle path running alongside it. There’s absolutely no need to inconvenience everyone and put their own safety and drivers’ safety at risk in those circumstances. Use the ****ing cycle path!

Inconvenience? With the exception of Motorways, cyclists have more of a "right" to be on the road than most other road users (before folk flip their lid, motorists require a license which grants them the privilege to drive, a privilege that can be relatively easy to revoke!).
But, I can think of a couple of places where if I was to be cycling, I'd cycle on the road rather than the prescribed path and I'd do it for the safety of others along with it being easier to make progress. Holyrood Park is a fine example, there is a cycle path on one side (so not great if going in the other direction as you need to cross the carriageway twice) but the cycle path (not shared use path) is very often full of pedestrians so I'll cede way and stick to the road. In doing so, I can't see how I'm compromising anyone's safety and any inconvenience is minimal.

There are a few roads near me where the roads aren’t wide but they are busy where it can be difficult to safely pass a cyclist for long periods of time, all the while traffic builds behind them. There’s quiet, well maintained And easily accessible cycle paths right beside them.
One of the roads is a busy 40 limit used by HGVs who either have to sit behind the cyclist (uphill) as they can’t pass them safely or, as you see fairly often, they pass in an unsafe manner. They shouldn’t do that, obviously, but that situation is completely needless because there’s a dedicated cycle path that could be used.

There is a national cycle network that takes cyclist away from major roads, but you still get groups cycling on the A9!!

Equal yes, more? no.

Obtaining a license at least shows you have shown to be capable where as cycling doesn't. I'm not a Car v Bike guy and respect those who choose to cycle (I have said numerous times on here there are too many cars about these days) but the two need to learn to live together.

It might seem a bit Orwellian but some road users are more equal than others, that's why/how we have a hierarchy with pedestrians at the top and private car use at the bottom.
Again, like numerous other times, I could be wrong here but I heard/read that the majority of cyclists do have a license so I'm not sure if that point/argument holds any water if so many cyclists out there that already hold licenses contribute to so much antisocial road behaviour.
Personally, I don't get the them/us, cyclist/driver conflict. We're all people, just trying to get somewhere by whatever means we have available to us. We just need a little more patience, tolerance and perhaps put ourselves in their situation for a minute and and aim to be understanding rather than automatically assume everyone around is is going out there way to frustrate us.
I've literally just got back to Edinburgh traveling back from South Queensferry way, I wanted to get off the road before the Queen passes through the area. There's a cycle path to the side of the A90, I have to assume it's a footpath too, but it's absolutely rammed with folk waiting for the cortege to pass so much so that cyclists are having to go on the road. I came down the slip from Dalmeny House and had to wait behind a couple of cyclists as I didn't manage to get my speed up to safely pass on the outside lane. I chuckled to myself after posting here earlier, but rather than get excited, I just had to wait, and it was literally 30 seconds so no drama, but apparently that was too much for the car behind who leant on his horn and dangerously pulled out in to lane 2 before flying off, way above the posted 50mph.

I realise what's happening today is very unique, but I couldn't believe folk were parked in lane 2 on the M90 northbound, out their cars, and taking pictures from the central reservation, meanwhile, cars were still driving up lane 1.

I was once on a very scary bus ride in the mountains near the East coast of Greece, those of us that weren't on our knees praying did actually give the driver a round of applause once we got to our destination which was weird because he was the one who caused most of the panic. I found out later is it always better to take buses at night time so you don't see the mad things the bus drivers do on these narrow precipitous roads :greengrin

Aye I agree with that, there are exceptions 🤣 you have probably been down the road to Marmaris, many years back it was no more than a two lane road (4 lanes now) and we always travelled at night so never really thought anything of it, Wife normally gets the window seat on the plane and I get the one on the bus. One year we had a day flight and I kid you not I had literally **** myself, the drop at my side scared the **** out of me, not helped having the Turkish version of Jackie Stewart driving the bus !! I asked my Wife to change back to night flights after that 🤣

No but the way some of them drive I'm tempted. Having a painful shoulder as I do a bus journey is not something I look forward to.

Whilst it's strange, a lot of people don't have a built in fear or nervous worry about getting the bus... or indeed said bus falling 10000 feet to a sudden stop.

Missing the bricks and large stones being chucked by wee ratbags at buses, taxis etc, a mate of mine got his windscreen smashed on his Merc taxi going through there, quite a few cabbies now refusing jobs going through the area.

Yeah I know that happens on a near regular basis but I have never experienced it myself, thats in Niddrie, Liberton, Pilton, Clermiston or wherever

Its probably more the nick of the roads, diversions, constant traffic jams etc. Ive got a bad back, dodgy hips and knees so travelling around the city can be quite trying at times, it has probably worsened ten fold since the days of jumping on and off the back of a bus or giving the ‘Clippie’ a bit of lip 🤣

I was in the supermarket the other day and two English sounding students were in the crisp aisle discussing what ‘chips’ they should get. They could probably argue I shouldn’t have been listening to them but even still, it annoyed me more than it should have.

They also (generally) reverse the use of ‘tin’ and ‘can’ - east coast is usually a tin of soup and a can of juice, they say it the opposite way around

I’m currently looking for a new job and the amount of companies that take the piss with the expected working hours Is fast becoming a pet peeve of mine. What happened to the old 9-5 with an hours lunch break?

Just saw a job there where the working hours are Monday-Friday 8-5:30 plus a rotational Saturday morning…….

(I appreciate people will work these hours and more, I just think it’s wrong companies expect these hours out of people)

I agree mate. A place I used to work had people who did 8-6 and a 1in4 Saturday morning

interestingly, on places like LinkedIn, there’s often posts saying it’s wrong on companies to expect 9-5 m-f, that people need more flexibility etc

I’m all for flexibility within the working day so if business allows it an 8-4 or a 7-3 is as good as a 9-5. It’s the expectation that a working day of 9-5 is no longer enough for employers and the working day is now growing and growing. Where does this stop?

IMO an employer getting a 9-5 hour shift out of an employee is plenty.

Obviously if the company needs extended hours because of customer support or whatever then that makes sense but just doing so to try and get more from their employees is a false economy.

It’s well known that people stretch their work to the time available so tacking and extra hour on their day does not make them any more productive and can actually be counter productive.

Hence why some employers have been trialling the 4 day week and coming up with surprising results. The same amount (and sometimes more!) of work is achieved in a shorter time. Won’t work for all companies of course but it’s the same principle at work.

I've had this conversation quote openly with my employer on several occasions.

I've always been someone who gets more done early in the day, I regularly choose to go into work earlier than my scheduled start time and will power through a whole load of work by lunch. In the afternoon my productivity falls off a cliff. If I worked 7.30-2.30 then I'm certain I would get as much, if not more, done than I do with my current hours despite it being a shorter working day.

On the more general point I think a lot of the additional hours employers are tacking on to their employees day is consumer driven. How many of us expect online or telephone customer support to be open until late evening and throughout weekends? Late night shopping used to be a Thursday night, now it's every night of the week in many retail parks and centres. Delivery drivers work until 9.30 for companies such as DPD because there is an expectation that goods will be delivered within 24 hours of ordering. I see that all the time in my work now, the cut off for next day deliveries used to be 3pm, we had to push that back firstly to 4 and now 4.30 to keep pace with our competitors; many customers have no loyalty, if they can order something an hour later for a comparable price and get it quicker then we lose them. That means sales admin support staff and the warehouse guys working later to allow us to compete. There's a well known Edinburgh estate agent that opens until midnight 5 days a week now. I'm sceptical that anyone really needs to ask an estate agent something at 11.55pm that can't wait until 8am. The whole on demand 24/7 culture was probably started by the companies but when one started it the consumer embraced it and to compete many others had to follow suit. It would be a brave supermarket that closed at 7pm these days.

Of course evening and weekend working and that flexibility works for some but a lot of the slack is picked up by existing staff already spread too thin and the motivation for doing it is fear that if they don't, someone else will.

Women that moan about the space their man takes up with his stuff in a suitcase. “You’re worse than a woman” is the retort both my current and ex wives have given me. No, actually I’m quite a bit bigger than you so my stuff takes up more room than yours, so even though I’m taking up half the case, I have less stuff in there overall.

My wife is the logical one in our relationship but sometimes I still wonder what goes through her head when she does something very insignificant, but very irritating at the same time.

Example: got a mesh wifi system for the house and it was a most annoying thing to set up. I tried for about an hour and was a beaten man by the time I threw the towel in. She had a go and sorted it within 15 minutes. Some lass.

BUT THEN

We have our two recycling wheelie bins in the garage to save keeping smaller bins somewhere in our quite wee kitchen. They’re positioned so you don’t need to go down the steps in to the garage so you can open the door, reach the lid, lift and deposit detritus, but she goes and puts things on top of the lid, so if you waddle to the garage laden with stuff for the bin you can’t open the lid to get rid of it.

It’s maddening.

I’m at Oriam waiting on my daughters class to finish. Watching a kids game, U10s maybe, the coaches on one team are a couple of clowns. Their team isn’t as good but they’re just berating the kids. No actual encouragement or anything constructive.

Being in Lanzarote for my first holiday since 2019 because of Covid and there’s a tropical storm going on. Apparently Tenerife have it worse, they’re not allowed out their hotels. Could only afford a week this time with how expensive it is, and it’s looking like I’ll be lucky to see any sun.

The wee, bitter dark bit at the end of a banana when it’s been peeled. Yuck.

Shelling boiled eggs, when it works brilliant, but Ive never mastered it. Most of the time my large boiled eggs end up the size of quails eggs by the time Im finished peeling them as half the egg ends up stuck to the shell 🤬

The Germans call it "giving the eggs a fright". Basically you run the eggs under cold water for about 10 seconds after taking them out the pot. That helps separate the membrane, egg and shell and makes it easier to peel.

Also helps to stop soft-boiled eggs from continuing to cook after you've taken them out.

Mate believe me Ive tried everything, your method and Stairway 2 7s do work and those are my tried methods but more often or not it ends in disaster

My Wife likes boiled egg on toast on a Sunday and is miffed everytime she gets scrambled egg instead 🫣

You hold the egg under the slowly running cold tap AS you are peeling it. Works every time and no it doesn't make the egg cold to eat.

At the risk of simply providing a weekly commentary on a kids game I’m watching again with the same two teams playing while waiting on my daughter. The coaches aren’t saying much. This weeks peeve is unfair but the stocky wee striker who thinks he’s billy big time simply because he’s bigger than the others but not any better technically. 1. Folk working in shops that are on a phone call but go ahead and serve you anyway. Firstly it is rude to both you and the person they are speaking to but I had genuinely no idea if he was talking to me or the person on the phone at times.

2. Computer says 'no'. He produced the stamps and puts them on the counter in front of me. I get ready to pay and then he pulls the books of stamps back and says "sorry, I can't find a button for them on the till, so I can't sell you them".

Developers build houses in the most crazy locations too. Anytime I head north over the Queensferry crossing I always wonder who on earth would want to buy one of the new houses right next to the M90. The noise would drive you nuts, and you'd need your windae cleaner round weekly to clean the stoor of your windows from the road.

Just made a lovely baked pasta then dopped it getting it out of the oven. I blame Hibs. What a **** day.

In places where you can only book a table if you are a big party but only two of them turn up at the reserved time so they are hogging a table for an hour with only two people at it.

We were at The Pitt earlier and it was reserved from a specific time so the people came and asked us to move (fair enough) but there were only two people at the table for over an hour until their mates turned up. At least turn up on time!

Smoked haddock, I love it and could eat it every night, however I used to get big chunky fillets but recently they have been scabby wee fillets, come on fishmongers, back to big fish please

Cooking/baking programmes that only give oven temperatures for electric ovens. Some of us use gas and would appreciate the gas mark as well.

Large bones in ‘boneless’ smoked haddock, normally when bought from fishmonger there is not a bone in sight, not even a teeny wee one. Wife bought boneless fillets from Morrisons and it was like chewing my way through barbed wire to the point it was inedible 🤬

Think they must have hired Stevie Wonder to fillet and bone those fish (sorry Stevie) 🤬

Haddock stocks are diminished to the extent that all (less and less of the catches are decent sizes) the big fish go to the people willing to pay for it, that leaves fishmongers with the wee fish. We've overfished this species for years and they reckon they will be extinct in the next 30 years. They are currently listed as a vulnerable species. Add to that list Atlantic Cod, some Tuna species, certain species of shark will all be gone within our kids lifetime. Kinda scary but the way we fish has become unsustainable.

Actually thanks for that, I kind of thought there would be an issue like that, I dont shop often, mostly Wife does it online but I have noticed when Ive visited a fishmongers the fish do look a bit scabby

In U.K. waters yes, not so in other areas though.
