Is it established now that Covid-19 cannot spread through airborne route? This is from a Feb 28 article:
While both the flu and COVID-19 may be transmitted in similar ways (see the Similarities section above), there is also a possible difference: COVID-19 might be spread through the airborne route, meaning that tiny droplets remaining in the air could cause disease in others even after the ill person is no longer near.

Obviously you would discard a mask that's full of biological crap just as you would discard a builder's dust mask that's full of physical crap!

But discussion of the relative efficacies of masks, handwashing, etc, is a sideshow. On The Holy Ground the debate might more appropriately be about the relative value of the UK's economic performance in the event of a serious outbreak against the lives of elderly and otherwise vulnerable people, and whether Patel and her chums can be relied on to represent the common good in that balancing act.

Obviously there's pro's and con's for wearing a mask or not, I'm going with my doctors recommendations. What do you do with these masks when they're needing discarded? You go in a restaurant for something to eat, surely you don't just chuck it in the bin? Sit it at the side of your cutlery? What if you're a smoker, do you cut a wee fag shaped hole in the mask to get a puff? You need a drink so you take your potentially infected mask off and transfer it to your hands? I think the objective is just to keep good hygiene so infections don't get near your mouth.

How long is this virus alive on say an infected surface?

Definitely remove a mask for eating. Not for smoking though - a doctor's advice in that case will be don't smoke.

The public health advice being transmitted on the radio and in the media concentrated on using a tissue, disposing of it properly and hand washing, no mention of buy yourself a mask, how strange eh! Or is it?

Key point. It's a new disease, hence there are a lot of 'don't knows', particularly about what will happen when and if it mutates.

I have to say I'm finding the 'its all a load of hysteria' kneejerk reaction equally as tiresome as the'Its going to be just like Steven Kings The Stand' kneejerk reaction.

Am I right in thinking there’s still not been any cases in Scotland? If that’s still the case then the only logical conclusion to make is that, like a lot of ailments, Irn Bru is clearly the antidote.

Yes that’s correct so far, plenty of folk reported symptoms and consequently been tested but all have come back negative including those who have come from affected areas in Italy, so far so good.

First Scottish case confirmed in Tayside - patient recently returned from Italy.

(A good couple of weeks after the ***** mail/express tried to tell us the first UK case was in Scotland and a crisis for Sturgeon.)

Hopefully the patient pulls through.
If they flew back no doubt there will be more confirmed cases soon.

The first Scottish case confirmed that it was someone who had recently been in Italy. Didn’t say where though to be fair.

People will often build multiple destinations into a trip when they go away to something like the rugby though.

I was speaking to a bloke a couple of weeks ago who was going to Venice for a few days as well as Rome for the rugby - I doubt he'd have been alone having that sort of itinerary. Just a few folk taking the virus from the affected northern area to the close contact of bevvying and watching rugby Rome and you could have a recipe for trouble.

I'm no expert but I'm guessing all the Italians ate the game weren't from Rome. Who knows though.

You've got to feel for the virus. Imagine waking up and finding you're in Dundee.

Interesting comments from Dr Catherine Calderwood today who is Scotland's Chief Medical Officer.

Basically saying once the virus spreads it will b "business as usual" in that it will be very much like the flu with some people getting ill with this and unfortunately some severely.

That pretty much says to me there is an acceptance that this thing can't be contained and it's going to be an everpresent going forward though we will of course learn more about how to treat and vaccinate against in the coming months and years.

Look at the rate it's spreading in Italy. Think they got over 1700 cases now. That could be us in a few weeks.

I couldn't sleep last night so was watching one of the 24 hour news channels at silly o'clock.

They had an epidemiologist on and he seemed to back up the theory that a more widespread outbreak was likely, I think he actually said inevitable, and that it would likely become another permanent coronavirus we just have to deal with.

He also addressed the threat of the virus mutating and said any major mutation seemed unlikely. He suggested that the worry with SARS and MERS was that they could have mutated to transmit between humans easier. He said the current virus doesn't have that problem and is already a 'good' virus in that it passes between humans easily but doesn't make most people ill enough to force them to either isolate themselves quickly or die. Basically you are no good to a virus if it kills you. He said that, like anything, a virus evolves to make itself more successful and this one currently seems to be managing just fine.

Obviously that is just one mans opinion but I thought it was an interesting take.

I was listening to a diseases expert on the Today programme this morning and I think you are correct about the mask and the specific nature of the coronavirus droplets. What she did say was that the mask does help with the inevitable contamination you get from contact between mouth and your hands. And during the SARS outbreak there was a parallel reduction in non SARS flu deaths because more people were wearing masks. So fair play, youre spot on about its lack of direct effectiveness, although it does have other benefits.

I wore one on the plane and at the airport anyway and didnt feel too much of a dick:greengrin There were a fair few others wearing them too.
