Butler has effectively gone to war with his team (Miami Heat). He wanted a massive extension done last summer, didn’t get it, so told the team he would not sign a new deal and wanted traded to one of 4 teams, which they refused. Since then he’s been injured frequently, and has form for poisoning the well to get what he wants, leading the team to suspend him twice, and make it clear they will trade him anywhere. The trade deadline is the 6th of February so we’ll find out soon how this will play out.
Doncic is a real shocker, be interesting to see if there’s more to it than we’ve heard so far. The gist is that the Mavs are unhappy with his continued lack of physical conditioning, and were getting the fear of dropping a $345 million dollar contract in the next 18 months. But, as several commentators are asking, why would you proactively offer him to one team, who you didn’t even wring out the best return from, when you could simply make it known he’s on the table for trade and let various teams get into an auction to get him? Even though it’s known he’s not one for keeping his body in the best condition, he’s an excellent player, teams will gamble they can get him and keep him in a better physical condition.
