Curiosity question...

Who pays their tv licence and who doesn't?

Is it a personal vendetta against the BBC by not paying (can of worms!), is it a value for money thing, don't like being forced to pay?

Personally for me I do pay it although as the years go on it's very rare I watch live tv so I'm swithering about cancelling. I can't be assed with the hassle of anyone knocking at the door though, or I'll rephrase that my wife can't be arsed for the sake of £15 a month.

Again for me it is down to principle and not the monetary value.

I do, use iPlayer frequently but its worth the fee for Bluey alone.

I do. I think it's pretty good value for money all things considered.

I think this is similar to the IPTV thread in that ultimately a big factor in not paying is that you're unlikely to get caught/punished for doing so.

I pay it for the radio output alone.

(I know you don't need it for radio, but my paying it helps to keep those stations going).

Nope. I have a TV for my PlayStation 5, don't have Virgin, BT, Sky, etc. Also never use iPlayer so absolutely no way I am paying for a licence when I don't watch any TV ever.

I do, but i really grudge paying,I never watch the news Question time etc,infact I rarely ever force myself to watch the B.B.C.

I pay because I’m too square not to but resent BBC Scotland. The rest is so so.
Hate their support for Isreal and biased views on Scottish politics.

I do, I occasionally watch bbc content live-ish, and watch a reasonable amount of iPlayer content.


BBC Scotland are a farce, but I would still pay for the stuff I watch.


Outwith iptv is excellent value for money, and there’s something for almost everyone

I do as they still produce some decent stuff. News coverage is brutal now though compared to years gone by. ITV/STV and Sky much better. I watch EuroNews or France24 for a different perspective too.

I've never understood when you see people online saying "who still pays for a tv license" or "stopped paying that a long time ago" (some of them are probably not telling the truth I suppose)

When people stop paying are they genuine people who never watch anything on the bbc platforms ever or is it just folk who don't want to pay but watch whatever they want?

Does someone come round your house? What's the legality of just saying nah not paying that thanks?

When the crucible was on my tv was on either BBC2 or Iplayer non stop for 2 weeks. I don't see how I couldn't pay for it?!

I pay for it, I have my issues with the BBC, but things like Attenborough and some of the documentaries make it worth every penny to me

I pay it. It’s not perfect but I think the BBC are largely very good, if not excellent.

I pay it, but only because she's paranoid we'll go to jail if we don't.

Weirdly though, I do get letters regularly saying they're going to come investigate me. I moved house, tried to move the licence on their website, didn't work. Tried to call them, on hold for 20 mins. I'm no trying to call them again. They can come to the house to investigate me and find out.

Yep. The BBC does so much more than just telly. Bitesize has been really helpful for my daughter's recent SQA exams, for instance.

Interesting, but 45+ years ago when I first was married I got lots of threatening letters because I didn't have TV licence. I didn't have a TV, but I told them I was newly married and made our own entertainment.

Had a licence up until 2014. The bias associated with that referendum scunnered me completely. More recently, the radio broadcasting of the situation in Palestine, back at the time when a Scottish accented spokesman for the IDF was given airtime to voice utter hatred unopposed by the weak Gary Robertson, just felt disgusted by it.

I get that people value other content, but given the drivel, perhaps they could introduce commercials to BBC 1 and Radio 1 to fund their broadcasting.

I never watch council telly or anything broadcast by BBC TV, but I'll take my hat off to Melvin Bragg and In Our Time.

I pay it for Radio 6music alone, nothing else.

No, not for a number of years.

I don’t pay it, largely because I disagree with it being mandatory, even if you don’t use BBC. It’s also £175 a year I can confidently save. I finally disagree that it’s good value for money.

The only thing I watch on BBC is Sportscene, and going forward Scotland games now they are finally on BBC. Not great value for £15 per month.

I get Disney+ and Netflix (both with adverts) for £11 per month in total, and the amount of content that interests me on those two combined vs the BBC is night and day. I could add a 3rd service and the monthly total still only matches that of the licence fee.

Remove IPTV for £50 a year from the equation because the value is fantastic but illegal.

I pay it and can relate mainly to the comment higher up about being too square not to.

There are consequences for being caught breaking the law for me that are fairly severe so it's not really something I'm going to take a risk on. I'm also too lazy and inexperienced to work out how to get round paying it safely.

Re the BBC - I sort of detest BBC Scotland. I can't stand what Sportsound has become and I had serious issues about stuff like the referendum coverage, when it was a biased state propaganda machine that I was ashamed to be funding.

There's a bit of me that does the upside down sort of thinking though that because I fund it I feel more entitled to fairly criticise it. I also hold out a peculiar and perennial sort of hope that it can improve.

There's a role for a state broadcaster and this one will very occasionally put out first class coverage of something. I find myself drifting towards the i-player to watch their output with reasonable regularity.

I don't think it should pay Gary Lineker a king's ransom, I think it should give opportunities to the "up and coming" rather than pay shedloads to the already established. I think it should fund and feature much more minority sports and sports from the regions.

Overall though, I think it has the potential to be a force for good even if it goes through spells when it does the exact opposite. I remember someone who worked for the BBC once making the point that the entire population thinks it is biased against them and if they don't then they're probably not doing their job.

Enjoy a lot of stuff on iplayer, documentaries, nature programmes, films etc

Never paid it, don’t think I know anyone who does.

Tell you something that pisses me off. My son went off the uni last year (in Edinburgh of all places). He was in halls, comprising 5 individual bedrooms sharing a kitchen/sitting area. EACH of the five rooms needed its own TV license!!! None if them had a TV but they needed a license because they all had laptops that could stream iPlayer if they wanted. It’s a total rip off. I’ve also been waiting 2 months for the refund I’m due as he’s only there 9 rather than 12 months. Utter rip off!

That rings a bell - something to do with being behind a locked door (or that's the rumour I remember from my first year which wasn't yesterday).

They'd not have needed it just because they could stream though - only if they actually wanted to/did.

Agree with the principle though that it should have been 1 license for the flat.
