"One off" support 150 year anniversary

After Saturdays hugely disappointing win for Aberdeen and the potential European windfall for Hibs now vastly reduced,I just wondered if there would be an appetite for the fans to show their support to thus seasons team and indeed the Women's team in our 150th anniversary by raising a sizeable amount of cash as a way of saying thanks. Thanks for a really enjoyable and successful season, thanks to SDG for bringing the Club closer again to the fans, thanks to Grant Scott for a fantastic league winning achievement with our Women's team against the odds and thanks to the Gordon family for their continued investment. If ever there was an opportunity could this be the season?
Thinking out loud my thoughts - could some our fanbase afford to pay a "one off" £150 as a contribution to players funding for next season? If say 3500 fans supported the initiative it would generate £525k, 5000 would achieve £750k and it would take 6670 contributions to achieve £1m+.

Could the Club design a "thank you" area somewhere in the stadium to mark each contributor?
A gesture in our anniversary season to help kick start the new season and keep the feel good factor going between the Club and the fans. Fanciful or possible with a bit of planning? Happy to hear opinions for and against.

A great idea and one the club realistically should be all over. Anyone here able to pass this on to them?

We are already in the process of preparations for a relaunch/reset and you will be hearing a lot from us over the coming months.
We have the means and infrastructure to do this and we have been having great discussions with the club for a number of months. We are up for it - are you ?

I'm sure a few would contribute but the vast majority already spend a lot on season tickets and merchandise.

Nice idea but don't see it taking off.

I get what you are saying. If something like like this was to be put in place I am sure there would be fans who would donate and others who won’t. If it was me I would link it to the “buy a brick” initiative. Donate £200 get a brick with your message on it plus a donation to the club. It’s a win win. There should also be a vehicle where supporters can donate a minimum of £10 if they so desire. A certificate could be issued to each contributor. This sort of initiative is about getting fans to continue bonding with the club and helping with the purchase/signing of players

This would be a one off donation/contribution

It is not guaranteed that will miss out on European money. We still have a chance to reap the rewards. I think in recognition of the club's wonderful season over many competitions, we are going to see record numbers of season tickets sold. The fans have been asked to fork out plenty, so I would be against the club asking for more.

Away from the merits of HSL, of which I’m a big supporter, I think one off fund raising is a bit more contentious for me.


Had we still been owned by STF, I would be right behind this because he was never interested in owning a football club - he bought Hibs because he wanted us to have a club to support. At that point it was absolutely on us as a support to fund the club, imho.

When Ron Gordon took over, that changed and for me, it’s on the super wealthy owners to fund the club, not the ordinary fan who already spends plenty of their income on season tickets, away tickets, strips etc.

When billionaires are involved, they don’t need my/our money to prop up their vanity projects. We won’t see that money bring down ticket prices or make tops cheaper, we might bring in a better player but when they’re sold that won’t trickle down to us - but it will add value to the club that will go into the pockets of the super rich when they sell up.

Bill Foley could put the Euro money into Hibs tomorrow and would have made it back in interest by Wednesday.

HSL makes sure that the support retain a level of ownership of the club and if we raise enough maybe one day we’ll be well placed to buy the club back. I would urge folk that want to raise cash to use that avenue rather than a one off collection.

I just wanted to air my own personal thoughts out there given our successful season and the disappointing result in the SCF on Saturday. I take your point Matty and all.It's expensive enough to follow Hibs and spare cash is scarce.Could this be a good season to re-energise HSL?

Pretty much where I am.

It also has to be remembered that this isn't some unforseen catastrophe. It's a potential drop in European income, and I stress potential because it's not even guaranteed, and it's something Hibs will have budgeted for.

I'd also add that it's not as if the ownership has shown a lack of interest. They have repeatedly put their hands in their pockets in the time they have been custodians of the club. If we were up to our eyes in debt, posting losses and the ownership was AWOL I'd be more inclined to donate to some kind of 'fighting fund' but it just isn't the case.

Finally the club has already announced a community fundraising project for the anniversary year. I'd be concerned if some fans felt put in a position where they had to choose between giving money to the club or giving money to a good cause (not saying Hibs isn't a good cause but you know what I mean). There are all kinds of avenues to put money into the club just now and I'd wager most on this board utilise then to the level they can afford. I just don't think handing over money in this way is necessary nor does it sit right with me.

Not for me, Hibs have off the scale rich owners and part owners now, they can make much more difference with their money than we ever could.

Different to HSL imo. HSL is about fan ownership this is about improving the player budget in our 150th year. I think I am up for it as a one off and to help build upon an amazing season just finished.

Apologies, I meant it was basically HSL in that you can contribute money that goes to the club and get a certificate for it. It’s absolutely in HSL’s gift to donate money to the club with their members’ permission, it’s been done before.


Anyway, my intention wasn’t to piss on anyone’s parade with this, I just think that there’s a perfect vehicle for fans to support the club and benefit in the long term in HSL, and imho it makes more sense to focus on one route than spreading the effort over two.

I've suggested on the Rot-Weiss Essen thread that one way to compensate for some of the funds we may miss out on in Europe would be to try and get big numbers along to this game. Almost treat it as a European tie in fact.

The potential European windfall hasn’t been reduced at all. Potentially we can still make the europa league group stages, albeit we now have to navigate 2 ties rather than 1, and can still make the europa conference groups if we don’t make the Europa league groups. We aren’t guaranteed group stages and the money that brings, but we’re not out of it either.


It’s a tougher ask, but the potential funds haven’t changed at all. Arguably we could earn more money now, as we’d have to play a further tie to get to the groups.

I always think fundraising works best with a specific goal in mind. Is there something we could do as supporters that would celebrate our 150 years and be a monument to our part in the communities we have been part of. Not sure a give more money to the club has a great deal of appeal to me but something specific might. What about doing up a room in St Mary's or some purchases for the Historical Trust. Just aim the fundraising at something specific

Slightly tougher than that! 3 ties rather than one for the Europa League “groups”. 2 ties for Conference League “groups”. Unseeded in at least the first Europa League qualifier and if we lose that then unseeded in at least the first Conference League qualifier.

I agree. Was thinking that we could make something special limited edition with your name on it - eg 150 year limited edition tankard, shirt etc which you get having donated to something like wookie is suggesting

Just noticed there is a 150 fund sponsored by Capital Credit Union and the Gordon family have generously agreed to match every £1 up to a total of 50k for anyone wanting to make a contribution towards the club’s activities and projects celebrating the 150th anniversary

Thais is the thing that’s never fully been grasped even since the fighting sins mooted to pay for Sparky. Hearts on the other hand….

Re appetite remains to be seen but whilst amazing effort and investments in Leith Links / KFK showed the level back then. We’ve not had a Jambogeddon type event so not like for like.

It wouldn't be a charitable donation, in the legal sense of the term, as we're not a charity.

A donation, though, might be exempt from VAT, unlike a ST. It would be exempt as long as the donor wasn't receiving anything in return.

Buying ST's by the groups you mentioned would still attract VAT for the club.
