He has played pretty well but there needs to be a bit of context re his opponents. Berretini is only just back on the tour after months out with injury and I think that was Etcheverry's first game in 6 weeks or so after a hamstring injury.
He has a tough game against Mahac next. Would love to see him win that and go a bit further in the tournament.
He was writing himself off a few weeks ago!
Good couple of wins for him. He’s a long time finished competing at the business end of slams and bigger tournaments though. Think that’s where people have written him off and rightly so.
The fact he’s still doing what he is, after a long career and the treatment he’s had is impressive. Hopefully he can keep doing it and enjoying it for a bit longer yet.
First set won against Machac. Serving well.
He played a great set of tennis. Pity about the rain but if he can keep this standard of tennis, he should win.
He's on the verge of self destruction with his moaning at people in the crowd and bickering with the umpire but hangs on for 5-5, saving 2 set points.
Second set heading for a tie break
Cracking up now. Needs to keep his cool but can't see him winning anyway.
This stuff with the crowd is really bugging him now , he losing his focus
He clearly plays well when fired up but it's a fine line between using that angst in a positive or negative way. Towards the end of that set he just seemed determined to let anything and everything get on his nerves and then proceeded to make a few unforced errors and eventually handed over the set.
Machac looks totally unfazed by it all and I'll be surprised if he loses from here, unless Murray can clear his head and do what he does best.
Going to be tough for Murray from here
It wouldn't be an Andy Murray match without some drama
Aye crazy even by Murray's standards!
Really thought he was going to win that.
Great effort from Murray but credit to Machac who played those final tie break points brilliantly.
Looks like Andy's injury is pretty serious
Currently playing Wawrinka in the opening round of the french open. Just lost the first set.
Struggling here , Stan the Man is too strong for Andy ATM, it's a long way back for Murray
Yip, looks like he's playing his last French Open match
I totally respect the determination he showed to keep playing, I respect that he said as long as he was enjoying it he would keep going and I respect that he has earned the right to call time on his own career.
But.......this is pretty sad to watch. He doesn't really look much like he is enjoying it now and he's really struggling to be competitive. Maybe Wimbledon 2024 is the time to say goodbye and get the ovation his career deserves.
Just announce Wimbledon is your final tourney after this and that'll be that. Why wait any longer.
There's a guy with a black cloak and a scythe following Andy and he's catching him up quickly. Andy has nothing to prove , time and tide waits for no man , but it can't be much fun for him now
Makes sense to give Wimbledon a final go. Absolutely nothing to prove to anyone
Could be Nadal's farewell today against Zverev.
Not a great start, broken to 0 in the opening game.
Similar to Andy not the way Nadal would have wanted to leave the stage , time , age and wear and tear are catching up on these guys
