There was something on the discovery channel last night about metal detecting and how a guy in Staffordshire had found £10m of gold and treasure in a farmers field, think you need to ask farmers permission first.Quote:

Have a Google for the "Scottish Detector Club", they meet in Edinburgh. They'll help with all the legal advice including permissions & insurance etc.
