It would not be until 2001 that Hibs had another taste of European football when they entered the UEFA Cup and got a really tough first round draw against AEK Athens with the first leg away from home. That first game was scheduled for 13 September but of course two days earlier the whole of the planet was in shock when terrorists engineered two planes crashing into the World Trade Centre in New York. Air travel was suddenly an option many would be wary of using but it didn’t stop hundreds of Hibs fans making their way to Greece for the UEFA tie.

The flight I caught had landed in Athens when news filtered through that UEFA had cancelled ties out of respect for those that lost their lives at the World Trade Centre. Indeed the Hibs team were on their plane and taxiing down the runway at Edinburgh airport when they got the news and so they didn’t travel. Those of us who did reach Athens made the most of the trip and took over a city centre square as they sang and danced the nights away.

A good domestic season in 1973/74 saw Hibs finish second behind Celtic and that ensured a place in the 74/75 UEFA Cup for Eddie Turnbull’s men. Round one of the draw took Hibs to Norway to face Rosenborg Trondheim, a side that in recent years has been a regular in the Champions League but back in the mid 70’s their players were not even all full time.

With the rain pelting down and an icy wind blowing across the park only 5,000 fans turned out to watch. In the stand was Hugh Taylor of the Daily Record and in his match report he was scathing of Belgian referee Jan Detters who apparently penalised just about every Hibs tackle whilst letting the hosts away with murder.

It would be the 1972/73 season when Hibs next competed in Europe and rather than the UEFA Cup they found themselves in the European Cup Winners Cup because although they’d not won the Scottish Cup the previous season they had lost the final to Celtic and the Parkhead club had also won the league and so entered the European Cup.

Round One brought Hibs together with Sporting Lisbon of Portugal with the first leg being played at the Jose Alvalade Stadium on 13 September 1972. The hosts wore their normal green and white colours that night whilst Hibs played in a change strip of purple and white and years later Pat Stanton would declare that of all the European matches he’d played for Hibs the one in Lisbon was in his view the best team performance of all. Given the win over Napoli for example the Hibees must really have been good that night and yet they lost to Sporting 2-1 with Arthur Duncan getting what could prove to be a vital away goal.

By mid September 1968 Hibs were once again on the European trail when they travelled to Yugoslavia to face Olympia Ljubljana in round one of the Inter Cities Fairs Cup. Prior to leaving Hibs had breezed through their League Cup qualifying group and had beaten East Fife 4-1 away in the first leg of their semi final but weighing against that was the fact that they’d not put any league points on the board at that stage and so there was some apprehension from the fans back in Edinburgh.

We need not have worried because despite a heavy downpour Hibs turned in a sparkling display and won 3-0 thanks to goals from Eric Stevenson, Colin Stein and an own goal by Olympia defender Soskic.

Season 1967/68 saw Hibs back in the Fairs Cup where the first round draw pitched them against Portuguese cracks Oporto with the first leg played at Easter Road on 20 September in front of around 14,000 fans. Making his Hibs debut that night was former Rangers and Everton winger Alex Scott whose younger brother Jim had left Easter Road just a few short weeks before to join Newcastle.

Scott the elder had a fantastic hour before being replaced and had contributed greatly to Hibs scoring three times without reply. Peter Cormack notched two and Eric Stevenson the other to give the Easter Road men a good lead to take with them to Portugal for the second leg. Interestingly on the same night Rangers drew 1-1 away to Dinamo Dresden in their own Fairs Cup tie with their goal coming from a their centre forward Alex Ferguson!

Part Three of John Campbell's European series.....

In early September 1961 the men from Easter Road began their European campaign with a first round, first leg tie at home to Portuguese outfit Belenenses of Lisbon. The stadium was buzzing with the kind of excitement unique to European ties but the home support was soon stunned into silence as the visitors raced into a 3-0 lead with goals from Matateu who scored twice and Yauca but the one thing this Hibs side had in spades was determination and with the fans roaring them on they got level thanks to a couple from John Fraser and another, from the penalty spot, by a cool as a cucumber Sammy Baird.

Despite both sides having chances to score again no more goals were forthcoming and so the Lisbon side left content with their three goals and confident they’d finish the job at home.

It would be four more years until Hibs tasted European football again when they entered the Inter Cities Fairs Cup a tournament that came out of an idea discussed between Swiss football pools supremo Ernst Thommen, Ottorino Barassi of Italy and England’s Stanley Rous in 1955 all of whom later became senior officials of FIFA.

The competition was set up to promote trade fairs between cities and was spawned from the fact that many cities that held trade fairs had football teams that would meet each other in friendlies.

In the first of a series of articles, John Campbell looks at Hibernian's European history.....

ANY HIBS FAN asked to name the first British club to take part in the European Cup will proudly state that the honour fell to Hibernian Football Club. Of course Hibs had been pioneers of the sport of football, playing many games overseas before that tournament came into being.

Indeed almost a year to the day upon which World War Two ended, Hibs were in Germany facing a British Army on the Rhine side and winning 3-0. The gesture of travelling to a country still ravaged by the horrors of war was not lost on people both outwith and within the sport and that fact would prove vital when organised competition came into being.
