In the wake of a couple of successful seasons Hibernian find the going somewhat tougher as professionalism creeps more and more into the game of football. They certainly don't have their troubles to seek as indifferent form brings little by way of success and tragedy strikes as one former and one current player die at very young ages.

In the weeks after the 1906/07 season ended John McConnachie was transferred to Everton whilst Richard Harker, a proven goalscorer was signed from Crystal Palace and he found the target in his first game when Hibs drew 1-1 in the league away to Hamilton.

The defending League Champions fail to retain their title in a season that saw Hibs lose a number of good and key players as well as considering a move away from Easter Road to a new purpose built stadium elsewhere in the City.

The 1902/03 League Champions were about to pay the price of success as prior to the new season kicking off they lost four of their most gifted players when Bobby Atherton, Billy McCartney, Alex Robertson and Jimmy Hogg all left to join the professional ranks south of the border

Just a few years after almost going out of existence, Hibernian FC wins the Scottish Cup and follows that up with the League Championship

As season 1900/1901 got under way it was Dan McMichael who took the role of match secretary (effectively Manager) as the season ticket prices were announced to be 50p for new buyers and 37.5p for anyone renewing and children’s tickets were priced at 12.5p. At this time a great controversy rocked Edinburgh football when Hibs signed up goalkeeper Harry Rennie.

Now firmly back in the top League where they belonged, Hibernian set about competing strongly for both the League Title and the Scottish Cup but lacked consistency and failed to win either as the nineteenth century drew to a close amidst the usual serving of Cup protests and biased refereeing!

Back in the top Division where they truly belonged, Hibernian had an excellent season marred only by the ridiculous protests raised after a win in the Scottish Cup Semi Final and the result in the Final itself

With the players enjoying a break after the rigours of winning the Second Division the Hibernians Committee set to work on trying to drum up support for election to Division One. Every club in Scotland was visited including the three that ‘shared’ Edinburgh with Hibernians.

Winning the Second Division was not enough in itself to help Hibernians access the top league and so they had to do it all over again in a season where Scottish Cup heartache was cause by the all too familiar unscrupulous behaviour of Celtic Football Club.

At the club’s AGM in early June the disappointing news that Hibernians’ application for entry into the First Division had been rejected, brought cries of dismay from those assembled and those cries turned to anger when it was further made clear that Clyde had been admitted and yet they had not even been runners up in the Second Division. Of course the Scottish League was based in Glasgow and so were Clyde so the reader can draw his or her own conclusions.

After almost going out of business, Hibernians get their act together and successfully apply for membership of the Scottish League but they had to enter via the newly formed Second Division and getting out of there was not quite as simple as winning the title. Add in another dose of spiteful behaviour by Hearts and it makes for interesting times down Easter Road way!

Rising like a phoenix from the ashes Hibernians make crucial and somewhat controversial decisions to ensure that they can regain their place amongst the top clubs in Scottish football.

A crucial decision required to be taken by the Hibernians Committee. Since its birth in 1875 the club had very much been run by and for the people of Little Ireland but if it was to rise again and survive in future then drastic steps required to be taken. With Michael Whelahan’s blessing but not participation it was decided that if the choices available were to be either to continue to function at a much lower level, playing on public parks against lesser sides or to cease to play until ready to compete at the top again then the latter of those two options was the only way forward for a club as proud as Hibernian FC.

Sad times for the Hibernians as they lose their guide and mentor; miss out on joining the newly formed Scottish League and witness yet more of their stars departing for Celtic

Although large numbers of Glasgow Irishmen still wanted to follow the fortunes of Hibernians, poor form and bad results when the Edinburgh men visited that city caused many of them to turn their eye toward a successful Irish team – Celtic.
