Part seven deals with the painful period in time that almost caused the death of our wonderful club thanks to the actions of some heartless Glasgow businessmen.
The year 1888 held a number of notable historic events including the deaths of five London women at the hands of ‘Jack the Ripper. Inventor John Logie Baird was born that year and Vincent Van Gogh painted ‘Sunflowers’ while Keir Hardie founded the Scottish Labour Party. Whilst all of that was going on a significant number of players on the books of Hibernians were approached by John Glass and his associates and offered financial inducements to join Glasgow Celtic.

Part Six of the history of Hibernian FC looks at the near death of the Club thanks to the abhorrent behaviour of unscrupulous Glasgow businessmen.
Since their creation some thirteen years earlier, Hibernian had been the darling of every Irish Catholic immigrant in Scotland and the fact that Canon Hannan had always given priority to assisting charitable causes wherever and whenever possible, many needy people had been helped financially by the fact that gate monies from charity matches were always substantial, given the drawing power of the greens from Edinburgh.

Part five of John Campbell's look back in time tells of Scottish Cup glory and International recognition for some of the players which had the fans of Hibernian FC sitting on top of the world!
On the playing front there were to be changes before the next season would start with Michael Whelahan’s great friend Malachy Byrne finally hanging up his boots to concentrate on assisting with the running of the Club. A new goalkeeper was signed, from Morton, John Tobin and he was to go on to have a great and illustrious career with Hibernian.

Installment number 3 takes us on towards the 1880/1881 season where Hearts tried to have Hibs expelled from the league.....
The success of both first and second Hibernian XI’s served to feed the fever of football support in Little Ireland and more and more kids could be seen kicking a ball and shouting “Goal for the Hibernians” This prompted Michael Whelahan to suggest that further Hibernian teams be set up to cater for the demand and the first of those was “Young Ireland” formed in 1879. Can this be an early forerunner to Clubs having a Football Academy and, if so, does it constitute another first for Hibernian?

In his second installment, hibstorian John Campbell continues his look back at the beginnings of Hibernian Football Club.
Hibernian Football Club was officially launched on 6 August 1875 whereupon Father Hannan was elected both Manager and Life President. At that point Father Hannan presented the Club with a set of strips which were white with green trim and bore a harp on the breast. At the same time, Michael Whelahan was elected as the first Captain of the Club, a proud moment for both himself and his family.

In the first of series of articles, Hibstorian John Campbell looks backs to his formative years and recounts the history of Hibernian FC.....
As the name would suggest, Hibernian Football Club owes its origins not to the natives of Scotland or its Capital City where the Club has existed since being formed in 1875, but to those people of Ireland who fled famine in their home country and chose to carve out new lives for themselves in a new land.
