It was a busy close season in 1946 but mainly because the footballing authorities in Scotland were at loggerheads with the UK Government over the admission prices to Scottish matches in comparison to admission prices south of the border. The Southern League Cup goes on display in the Hibernian Boardroom in 1944; a Derby win in September sends Hibs on a long unbeaten run but by the end of the season not even Gordon Smith's impressive goals tally could help Hibs finish better than fifth but soon he would be joined by Lawrie Reilly, Eddie Turnbull and Willie Ormond and things would take a definite turn for the better!

As the country goes to war the footballing authorities initially decide to suspend all domestic competition but soon change their minds when it is pointed out how good it would be for the morale of the public to retain a degree of normalcy. The struggle to improve things on the park at Easter Road continues as Willie McCartney has to fend off approaches by English clubs for his better players. A Derby double helps lift the spirits as does a Scottish Cup semi final appearance but all of this unfolded against a background of building tension in Europe. A bloody war had been fought just twenty odd years earlier and the world was on the brink of another.

Second Division football brought low attendances and so drastic action was required if Hibs were not to slide into football oblivion. Cometh the hour, cometh the man and in Hibs' case it was Harry Swan that would sow the seeds for future success and stability. Promotion was gained and significant team rebuilding commenced, resulting in the fans coming back to watch this new Hibernian side.

Star players allowed to leave, Rangers kicking us off the park, a mixed bag of results against Hearts, fans disgruntled at the lack of investment in players and the humiliation of relegation.

As the 1928/29 campaign loomed the Hibs support was somewhat disillusioned at the loss of Jimmy Dunn but in reality it was naïve to expect that Hibs could keep him. Further misery came when Willie Dornan and Willie Miller, both long time fans favourites were given free transfers and there was even more doom and gloom early in the new season when Harry Ritchie was also transferred to Everton for an undisclosed fee.
