It's the eternal football argument - comparing the best of yesterday with the best of today. Along with the glittering and famed 'Famous Five' side, Eddie Turnbull's famed 'Tornadoes' were arguably Hibs' greatest XI. Can more recent players compare? In the first of three articles we examine and compare players since that time, man for man, with Eddie's exceptional side.

Continuing with the quest to compare the great Turnbull’s Tornadoes team with an XI selected from players gracing the green and white of Hibernian FC since those halcyon days. Today we look at the midfield contenders with some classic match-ups and confrontations derived from the last four decades.

Today: The third and final part of the trilogy attempting to compare and contrast Hibs’ lauded team of the 1970s’ with a selection of all-stars from the decades since. The respective managers take a hand too – one that is more than a little influential!

Hot on the heels of our national side being horsed by Norway, John Campbell reminds us of two Norwegians that we actually liked!

In modern day football you will find that clubs are multi national in terms of their playing staff but back in the late 1970’s, overseas players were more the exception than the norm. To be fair, Dundee United and Greenock Morton had been importing players from Scandinavia with a degree of success and it was against the latter that Hibs fielder two young Norwegians, giving them their home debuts against the Greenock club in the second leg of a League Cup quarter final.

A little something to cheer you up in case you're depressed by the PNE score, the lack of further signings or indeed if you're stuck at work on a sunny day

Saturday 25 October 1959 was an historic day for Edinburgh’s two football clubs. At Hampden, Hearts were disposing of a plucky Third Lanark side and in the process winning the Scottish League Cup but Hibs would not be upstaged by their Gorgie neighbours as on the same afternoon they were at Broomfield Park, Airdrie rattling eleven goals past their hosts!

With St Johnstone back in the SPL I thought I'd take a wee wander down Memory Lane and offer up some recollections of a clash with them at Easter Road. Also, there's an interesting wee footnote to the article that I'm pretty sure us Hibbies will like!

Another adventure in Europe for Hibernian as they take part in a sporting affair!

Older fans will know that the European Cup Winners Cup was a tournament that involved winners of domestic cup competitions throughout that continent and existed prior to UEFA reorganising European competition and creating the Champions League. Of course the Champions League is somewhat misnamed as it involves clubs that were not Champions of their domestic League and to that end it somewhat mirrors the situation that often arose in the Cup Winners Cup.

Back in 1966 it wasn't just England that made the football headlines. The World Cup had stayed in the UK and there had been a few exciting games during the tournament but for real thrills you had to be at East End Park in the September!

It was mid September 1966 and I was fast approaching my fourteenth birthday but the world was significantly different back then and attendance at Hibs away matches was infrequent. Thankfully, Maude MacFarlane’s assurances that I would be well cared for on the Hawkhill Bus persuaded my Dad to let me make the journey over the Forth to watch Hibs take on Dunfermline at East End Park.

It's a game we still talk about even though winning on the night was not enough. It's AEK revisited!!
Strange as it may seem, losing in a Scottish Cup Final after 100 years of trying to avoid such a fate, actually led to Hibs being involved in a match of such excitement it is still talked about some seven years later.
