Everyone knows we reached the semi final of the European Cup but how many Hibs fans realise we came close a second time in Europe?
As any Hibs fan worth their salt will tell you, Hibs were not only the first Scottish side to play in European competition but the first British side and not only that, they reached the semi final of the European Cup! All true and all part of the rich history of the club but it seems a pity to me that little is said of the fact that Hibs reached a second European semi final just a few years later, knocking Barcelona out on the way!

In an ideal world any young lad who has it in him to make the grade as a professional footballer will be noticed by club scouts, enjoy a visit to the family home by a club representative and, all being well, join that club in order to learn his trade.

Whenever the name of Hibernian Football Club is mentioned there's a chance that someone will make reference to the Famous Five but who were these men that wrote their names into Hibernian folklore? This is the first of a two part article in which John Campbell looks back at those halcyon days
If you look up the word LEGEND in a dictionary you are very likely to find the following definition: Someone or something very famous and admired, usually because of their ability in a particular area. Those words pretty well sum up the Hibernian forward line Smith, Johnstone, Reilly, Turnbull and Ormond that played together in the 1940’s and 50’s and which would collectively become known to Hibs fans and indeed football fans the world over as The Famous Five.

Every once in a while a football club has golden periods in it’s history and Hibernian is no different than any other club in that regard. The Forties and Fifties gave birth to the Famous Five, a forward line that mesmerised opposing defences and entertained wherever it played. A fallow period followed although there were sparks of encouragement here and there with some notable victories, especially in European competition, until the Seventies when Turnbull’s Tornadoes treated Hibs fans to some of the best football seen since the days of the Famous Five.

There will be many who recall the seven nil game at Tynecastle on Ne’erday 1973, and who like me did attend, or the six two game in October 2000, which I also attended, as their favourite game(s) involving Hibernian, primarily for the significant victories over our oldest rivals.
