THE PARTING OF WAYS between John Hughes and Hibs marked the third former player in succession leaving the club after returning as manager. Needless to say that has stimulated lively debate on Hibs.net but it’s not the first time the club has experienced such things. Like everyone, I’ve a view on the departure of Hughes but more of that later. Firstly I felt it might be of use, especially to our younger .netters to take a wee trip down memory lane.

To paraphrase the immortal words of Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi it could be that Hibs will not know what they’ve got ‘til it’s gone if Derek Riordan is allowed to leave the club for a second time and the way things look at the moment that is a distinct possibility. It seems that there are no discussions ongoing between Derek’s agent Jim McArthur and the club and little prospect of there being any in the near future with informed sources’ suggesting that he does not feature in the managers’ plans. If that is true then I’m fairly certain I won’t be the only Hibs fan who finds that situation both incredible and frankly unacceptable.

This Sunday marks a milestone in the history of Hibernian Football Club with the opening of their brand spanking new East Stand for the visit of current SPL champions Rangers and there seems sure to be a near capacity crowd despite the match being shown live on television. As usual the visiting fans will be located in the South Stand and as usual you can expect them to make one helluva racket in supporting their team but it is sincerely hoped that the creation of the singing section in the new East Stand will encourage all home fans to follow their lead in singing Hibs to victory. It’s a good innovation by the club and those fans who argued long and hard for the creation of the singing section can now get down to the business in hand with myself amongst their number!

So the seasons begun and its that time again where the ref’s of the SPL are blamed by fans for every point lost, every throw in given against them, every dubious tackle, every red or yellow card given and made the general scape goat (I’m sure there’ll be more goat references during the season..) for all the short comings that are blatantly obvious about Scottish Football.

After a pretty mixed bag of results and performances during their extensive pre season challenge matches and short lived participation in the Europa League, Hibs get down to the bread and butter stuff on Sunday with their opening SPL encounter against Motherwell at Fir Park where most of the players will be back on the ground where they forfeited a 6-2 lead in that incredible 6-6 draw back in May.
Unlike their guests, Motherwell decided to minimise the number of pre season fixtures their first team took on as Craig Brown was only too aware that the lack of strength in depth in his squad meant any injuries would hit hard.
