I think the draw for the round before us, is tomorrow, will that have any relevance to us and worth keeping an eye out for?
I feel like it does have some relevance and we should pay attention to it, I’m just not entirely sure why so was hoping someone more intelligent than me could join the dots for me please?

It doesn't have a massive bearing imo.
out of the teams we could draw in Q2: Shakhtar, Legia, Partizan and Sheriff are all in this Q1 draw.
All 4 would be massive favourites against any of the Q1 teams, so whoever they get won't make a massive difference either way.
Of the unseeded Q1 teams the best are probably Hacken or AEK Larnaca, so if any of the mentioned seeded teams were drawn against them then Hibs would benefit if they caused an upset as we could end up playing one of them instead of Shakhtar or Legia etc.

I don’t think Sheriff would be massive favourites, their European results were awful last season.
Also in terms of the unseeded teams, PAKS eliminated Larnaca 5-0 on aggregate last season so will be one of the stronger teams.

No, there isn’t really any hard and fast rule of how teams are regionalised. I’ve seen a lot of people predict it on an East/West basis but historical draw groupings suggest this isn’t really how it’s necessarily done.

From the groupings, Hacken probably the only unseeded team from group 1 who might be tricky for Shakhtar/Sheriff, but any of the unseeded teams in group 2 could be a banana skin for Legia or Partizan.
Does anyone have any idea how they produce these groups? Azerbaijan and Finland in the same group?

I remember going to the league cup final in the early 90s (it was at Parkhead as Hampden was being done up) where there was a banner saying "Levski Hibs" after the Previous Rangers had been scudded out of Europe by Levski Sofia

Q1 draw today, Q2 (us) tomorrow.
UEFA will split the teams for our draw into 2 groups (4 seeds, 4 non-seeds in each) to avoid any political "these teams can't play each other" clashes, so we'll have it narrowed down to 4 before the draw.
Potential opponents are:
Winner of Shakhtar's Q1 tie.
Braga
Midtjylland
Winner of Legia Warsaw's Q1 tie
Anderlecht
Winner of Partizan Belgrade's Q1 tie
Winner of Sheriff Tiraspol's Q1 tie

If we draw one of those sides in Q2, but they go out in Q1, then we don't get to steal their seed for Q3.
As the Q3 draw is made halfway through Q2, where they'd already be knocked out in this scenario, so we'd use whichever coefficient was higher out of ours or Aktobe, Larnaca etc. for the Q3 draw which would see us unseeded.

Still seems a bit of uncertainty around where Shaktar and Sheriff will be playing, so if we drew them would be good to get clarity on that. Presumably this would become clear on Friday. And we'd prob have to hold off booking anyway on the off chance one of the unseeded teams beat them.

To loop back on this. Olimpia Ljubljana play in the Champs League. It’s possible that could lead to a fixture switch should we draw Shakhtar as I think UEFA require 48 hours between ties at a stadium to allow teams to train on the pitch the day before.

Im hoping its one of Lugano, Midtyland or Anderlecht.
We've proved we can compete v Swiss teams. Midtyland were second behind Copenhagen last year ( who didnt exactly blow Hearts or Killie away). And Anderlecht were 4th in the Belgian league.

I really don't get this good away day thing. It really adds to a European tie when there is a competitive edge to it. Much as some on here enjoyed the away trip to Villa there was zero expectation after the first leg.

Tend to think the Scandi teams (Ilves & Hacken) are at a wee bit of an advantage given their new league seasons are underway. Don't think any of the other lot in this first draw have started their season yet.
Ilves will be a big fit Finnish side but it will be a stretch for them to beat Shakhtar. So I reckon the biggest chance for a non seed to progress are BK Hacken who are against the Slovaks, Trnava.

Playing the winner of Larnaca vs Partizan Belgrade would be a tie we’d have a decent chance of progressing in I think?

Apparently Kosovo is a great trip now, the country has recovered brilliantly since the war.
Kosovo is awesome, people are super friendly too

We’ll destroy any opposition we come up against. I scent European glory.

I was talking about Q3, the poster asked if we'd take their seeded spot in Q3 if we beat them in Q2. We won't as they won't be seeded, unless some seeds go out in Q1.
Ok, hopefully one or two go out if we get them then

Here are the OPTA Power Rankings (https://theanalyst.com/articles/who-are-the-best-football-team-in-the-world-opta-power-rankings) for expected teams we could face in comparison to us , Rangers and Celtic.
(OPTA Power rankings ranks the approx 13,500 global club teams in order based a load of recent data and assumptions, with 100 points being top and zero being worst) .

According to these, then we should be slight favourites against Lugano, Partizan and Sheriff. And obviously want to avoid Braga.
Interestingly, Shaktar are the lowest ranked team of the better teams, which I wouldn't have expected - so they might not be as bad a draw as has been talked about.

At 7:30 tomorrow morning our possible opponents will be narrowed down. Will be on the UEFA website.
Draw takes place at 12:00. However, there is a chance it will be Hibs v ???? or ????. We could draw teams from the first qualifying round draw which are still to be played.

Love this LaMotta.
Puts a load more meat on the bones of the UEFA co-efficients. Some of the UEFA co-efficients relates to results from 2 or 3 years ago which means hee-haw.

They'll be claiming 495 is bigger than 397.
