Unseen work

Now that the entire Scottish league season is completely done, I thought it was time to look back at the good work of those at the club and give credit where it’s due.
It starts with the appointment of Malky Mackay and then SDG.
I was happy with the appointment of Malky, very much in the ‘he knows the league and how to run a club’, although I appreciate I was in the minority - one thing stood out for me all season with him in his first interview. He said along the lines of ‘I’ll be the one that says to the board that things might not be as bad as they seem or why certain things are happening’. Something that would be massive later in the season.
SDG, being honest, I never thought deserved the job and I originally wanted someone else. I wanted a fresh start with someone not associated to the club.
The first couple of months were brutal, for a variety of reasons and again, being honest, I wanted him sacked. I could see nothing but relegation for us due to the way we conceded goals and inability to create anything of note. I was raging and in disbelief he never got sacked after the Dundee game.
This again is where the quote from Malky’s interview is important.
SDG and the players then do something that can only be described is unbelievable. 17 games unbeaten. With the flick of a switch we went from a team down in the dumps to a team with grit, determination, a know how to win games and quality.
We beat Aberdeen twice, we beat Hearts twice, we beat Celtic at home and Rangers away.
The squad spirit was unbelievable and the feel around the whole club sensational, and one of the best I’ve seen since I’ve been alive. They made us proud to be Hibs fans and made us feel ‘Hibs’, something that’s been lost under the last couple of managers and players,
In 7 months, SDG, the coaching staff and the players have completely transformed the entire atmosphere around the club. There’s a real feel good factor and buzz now.
SDG has got players playing to a standard I’m sure they weren’t even sure they were capable of. Smith, Iredale, Rocky, Triantis….even Boyle. SDG seems to get absolutely everything out of what is available to him, I don’t believe that’s luck. He’s an absolute top guy and top coach, his man management appears incredible and the unity he created is the reason behind our success. His choice of coaches/assistant were slagged aswell, he’s proven why he picked them. Get good people in the building and good things can happen.
We finished 3rd in the league and went out both cups to Celtic. I know today is frustrating as we all wanted European football until Christmas and the prize money that came with it. In November I’d have snatched your hand off to be in the top flight and laughed at a suggestion of top 6 let alone 3rd.
A absolutely massive well done to SDG, his coaching staff, Malky Mackay and the players.
From where we were at the start of the season, to November to now is absolutely incredible.
Now, let’s get prepared for next season, continue in the same form and have a good crack at Europe and the League.
