Football writer par excellence, for those of us of a certain vintage.

Was highlighting corruption in UEFA and Italian football in the 70s. Brilliant journalist.

Not for me. Way back when Dundee Utd under McLean reached the semi-final of the European Cup against Roma he totally belittled them with such scathing scorn for having the audacity to actually compete at this level. I will never forget the article he wrote in the Sunday Times after Dundee Utd had gone out in Rome . The language he used against them could only be described as a deranged spiteful rant.

I wonder if anyone else can remember how Dundee Utd were treated in Rome in the return leg after winning the first leg 2-0 by the Roma players, officials and the local press. Jim McLean was almost accused of being the devil incarnate and having used witchcraft to gain an advantage. The atmosphere in that stadium that night was hysterical and hate-filled. Mr Brian Glanville was only too happy to acquiesce.
