View Full Version : 3rd place secured - Well done Hibernian

To secure 3rd with a game to spare is a great achievement at the best of times, even more so after the season we’ve had. Superb.

The players and SDG can now relax at the weekend and enjoy the afternoon as can all of us.

Thank you, thank you

What a bonkers season it has been.

Finishing 3rd is remarkable considering the terrible start.

The icing on the cake would be group stages till Xmas - just need to wait till the cup final outcome.

The whole club deserve massive credit for turning things around.

The other thing is like the Jack Ross days - you can take things like this for granted but you really need to appreciate it considering the budgets of the Old Firm - we are the best of the rest. Not like it’s where I always want us to be but for Grays 1st ever full managerial season it’s an amazing ending and story. I’ve never known anything like it with a team being so poor to then go on a record equalling run of games. Pure entertainment!

Well done all the players and management - credit to the fans for the backing home and away this season too.

The league table can lie at various times in the season but when the final whistle is blown you finish where you deserve to. For Hibs that is going to be 3rd. There is no argument to be had, over the course of an entire season we are the 3rd best team in the league.

In any season that is an achievement. From where we found ourselves in December it's even moreso. Well deserved and a monumental effort. We looked out on our feet tonight and you can see why. Boys have given us everything.

Fantastic for everyone at Hibs and in particular, David Gray.

If we get European group stages, with a minimum of 8 games this will bring in millions of pounds to the club. This will be just reward for turning our season around.

One of the most memorable seasons I have had watching Hibs.

Third place would potentially leave David Gray’s men just one two-legged tie away from the league phase of the Europa League.

The added bonus is the parachute into the league phase of the Conference League in the event of losing the Europa play-off.

Hope we get someone pish in the Europa play off. (If Celtic win the cup)

If Celtic win the cup, we'd go to the Europa League playoff round, win that tie and it'd be Europa League group stage/league phase, though it's likely to be a very difficult tie, consolation is that if we do indeed lose that tie, we'd be in the Conference group stage/league phase.

Either way, a Celtic cup win guarantees European football for Hibs until at least Christmas.

I went straight from work to Easter Road on the night of the Aberdeen game in November, work was a bit crap that day and I questioned why I was even bothering because going to the game felt like a chore. I fully expected us to get pumped and for David Gray to get his jotters that night.

What a brilliant achievement and even happier it will be on points not goal difference. To overhaul Aberdeen after the respective starts we had is a miracle, and we did it as a group sharing goals and playing good to watch football. One job left for us to finish the season with a home win at fortress ER and a nice wee Sunshine on Leith to send Sir Tom off. The last bit of teh season is on Celtc not us and that looks more likely after their reserves demolished the Dons.

To be real for a second. This is a league within a league, we are one of 10 clubs every season who start at a massive financial disadvantage, so finishing 3rd is the equivalent of winning the league we realistically play in.

To do that from the position we were in at the end of November is an astonishing achievement ... so remarkable maybe Sportsound will manage to mention us before I finish my 1 hour 20 minute drive home on Saturday. I know that's the equivalent of hoping Hibs will be named European team of the year, but you never know.

The most mental season I can remember, was there a single game this year that didn't have something riding on it for practically every club? If this is a pish league ........ give me more of it

Yup if Celtic win cup..

Minimum 8 games (4 home / 4 away) if we lose the initial playoff game (to qualify for Europa league) - but a chance to progress in Europa conference and win more games:

10 games minimum - If we win the Europa playoff game we then have 4 home and 4 away in Europa league (plus the 2 playoff games). Though could be playing some really good teams.

We really need Celtic to do the treble and win that cup.

Annoyingly we won’t find out for another 12 days.

Has anyone got a clear post of all the dates for these potential ties ?

100% not taking it away from Hibs but having beaten Hibs and then losing to St Mirren away was massive weekend of results (when Hibs beat Utd).

Aberdeen definitely fell apart after a very good start (without having to play any major teams early on).

True. We can't control the results in other games. But the fact still remains, we did enough to finish 3rd in the table. It's not by coincidence either. There's been a clear shift in mentality under David Gray. Under previous managers, staff and ownership we could have easily crumbled and folded, but we haven't. That needs to be recognized and something that as fans we demand on a consistent basis.

It's so thoroughly deserved really. The spirit, determination and frankly some lovely football on the eye has been a revelation over these last 6 months. Wins at Pittodrie and Ibrox, a double against hearts, celtic beaten at ER. Memories are made of these.

How bad have Aberdeen been since they beat us by the way. Lost at St mirren and have now shipped 9 goals against a very average Rangers and a second string celtic.

Next season with possible European league football will be a challenge, hopefully strengthening the squad to cope. McGrath will help the midfield and more quality will help keep the ball better in latter stages of games.... could be an exciting season ☺️💚

To have been in pole position in summer 21 to really strengthen our grip on third place, knowing the prize at the end of the season and then have the collapse that we had all the while watching our city rivals come up from the championship and take that prize was a really humungously bitter pill to swallow.

To follow that up with successive changes of strategy and subsequent rotten manager after the other whilst Aberdeen and Hearts (once again) scooped that prize of the groups only compounded it.

Then came this season – last chance of the groups. In October we were completely out of the race for third. By the time the Aberdeen game came around I was expecting that within the next 48 hours we would no longer have SDG at our club, and so it seemed, until Rocky scored the equaliser.

Whilst that was the pivotal point, it still left us near or on the bottom of the table. Despite the pickup in form we remained near the bottom of the table when we beat Hearts on 26/12.

To go from being out of the race for third, to fighting for our survival to then finishing third is ridiculous, really. To go on a club record levelling unbeaten run winning some amazing games along the way makes it even better. To do it under the man who scored the goal to end our Scottish cup drought, and who we all owe (and give) a great debt of gratitude to, tops it off.

A massive well done to everyone involved at the club, from the board to the ground staff. It is not the same as winning a cup – but it is a remarkable achievement when you place it against the above backdrop. Congratulations, Hibbys – now lets round the season off with a well overdue three home points vs the huns.

I guess what this season (and the season Aberdeen revived themselves to get 3rd) tells us is that no matter how bad things look, particularly in this league, things can change very quickly given most teams can beat each other as has been the case for a while now. I for one was guilty of wanting Gray out Oct/Nov time as I couldn’t see it working but I’ll think twice next season if we were to go on a poor run and I think we might find the board will be the same.

Even this morning I still can't get my head around what we have achieved.

I remember arguing vociferously this time last year that we should not be letting Montgomery gut this squad, and bring a raft of his own players in, as many were advocating. I firmly believed that a decent manager would have had them performing much better than he had, and in a healthier league position. I was also of the opinion that even a diminished Martin Boyle could still be utilised in a way that would bring plenty of goals. I was behind Gray's appointment and thought he'd do well for us.

By the end of November I had accepted that I was very wrong about all of the above. After that Dundee game we looked like we had zero heart, fight, character, and very little quality. Our discipline was poor, we were so easy to play and score against, and looked doomed to relegation even then. The atmosphere around the club was toxic.

After 14 games, we were on track to win less than three games in an entire league season, and our PPG would have gained us 24 points. To go from that, to essentially title-winning form for the next 20 matches, is one of the most remarkable football turnarounds of recent times. Utterly astonishing.

Absolutely everything that we looked bereft of following that Dundee game, was suddenly available in spades. We were so solid, so dangerous going forward, scoring plenty goals and not bullied by anyone. We played some really great stuff as well. We've never been overly reliant on one player, missed Bowie for half a season, and Youan for around the same. Cadden's injury when he was the form player in the country didn't affect us. 19 different players have scored for us this season, 16 more than once.

And through it all, SDG has been SDG. Never up nor down, just an unbelievably strong presence, whose management ability - along with the backroom team - was getting better week by week. As much as I believed there was more to get from much of this squad at this time last season, never for one second did I believe that they could perform like this.

The last time I felt like this about a season - not wanting it to end - was the Lennon one (and if Saturday is anything like as entertaining, I wouldn't be disappointed). A good bit of that feeling came from knowing that our entire midfield was going - McGinn would be sold, McGeouch was away, and Allan was going back to Celtic. We don't require anywhere near that level of surgery now - though Triantis will be a real loss if he doesn't return.

If Celtic win the SC and the BKs really get involved this summer, we could have some incredibly exciting times ahead. The club seems very together, and in a very good place. It's been a very long time since I've felt this way about Hibs - to feel it only six months after the Dundee game, is absolutely mind-blowing.

The 3-3 draw with Dons was like someone flicked a switch. The reaction to the equaliser from both players and fans was huge. I think everyone was so desperate for SDG to do well and realised that a defeat that night could well have been the end for him. The turnaround since has been unprecedented imho.

* Mallorca
* AC Milan (away in the San Siro you say? Si Signore)

Agree for a play off (you want the most winnable tie)
But it's maybe different for the one off game (not home/away) once you're in the actual League stage though

Look at Shamrock Rovers this year - had their trip to play Chelsea for the glamour away trip (I'd prefer the San Siro to Stamford Bridge myself but the point hopefully stands)

Yet Shamrock still also got out the group stage by beating the other teams they faced - kind of best of both worlds for them and they did their club proud

...once you're in the league stage, playing a team as a one off, and (100% agree) not for the home/away play off.

Halcyon days for me were 1972 - 1976. 2 x 2nd and 2 x 3rd in those 4 seasons. At the time we knew Turnbull’s Tornadoes were good but probably didn’t appreciate how good, when compared to what has happened either side of these years during my lifetime.

I can only concur with all the credits given to DoF, coaches and players here. What an amazing turn of events. Well done, Hibs, and that means every single person at the club. Great team spirit requires solidarity, every squad member contributing to the drive to succeed, if for some only by striving to challenge the incumbents in training or by shouting encouragement from the touchlines. Positive reinforcement from non-playing staff surely goes a long way to adding self-belief.

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine Hibs having a Roy Of The Rovers season, going from zeros to heroes.

SDG is no doubt regretting the 2 week hiatus before the split as there seems to have been a break in concentration and we've lapsed somewhat into conceding soft goals and stroke-of-halftime goals as we did until December. The man is a man-management genius, however, so I've no doubt the team, whoever comprises it, will be well-drilled before the start of next term.

It's odd to think that my dearest footballing wish now is not a victory over Sevco this weekend but that Celtic lift the Cup the next.

We actually started that Dundee game really well and looking the part going a goal up. The sending off killed us and the team's spirit

It did however the sending off also led to us changing shape in the matches that followed as we didn’t have a proper left back. The rest is history

So we could, theoretically, be away to Salzburg.

Imagine thousands of Hibbies wandering round Salzburg singing 'Doh, a Deer'

If someone had told me back in November that we’d finished 3rd especially with a game to spare I’d have laughed in their face. At that point I’d just have been happy to stay away from relegation tbh!

An unbelievable turnaround and full credit to SDG for his resilience when a lot of managers would have buckled under the pressure and possibly walked. The teams worked so hard and stuck together. A really good group of players that hopefully wee can mostly keep together for next season.

From a season that looked like it was going to be a complete disaster actually turned out to be highly enjoyable. Some brilliant moments.

The first half of this season felt like the longest ever. It was mentioned somewhere about Rangers playing some of their games at Hampden this season. I honestly couldn't remember that at all!

The second half of this season felt like the quickest ever!

Hard to believe that Vente missing an open goal from underneath the crossbar happened in the same season as Iredale scoring that goal against them.

Biggest disapointment was the cup draws as this team deserved a crack at Hampden.

As much as we all want Hibs to challenge for third every year we very rarely achieve it. This is only the 4th time in 40 years we've done. SDG and the team deserve all the plaudits especially after the terrible start to the season.
