Quick look on google for the score in the Sunderland and Coventry match and i seen an article in the news section with them moving in the LED boards by 2 metres to stop Coventry's long throw.

You do see more teams using it more often like ourselves and i wonder how long its back for or if we see more and more teams use it.

Delap made it famous and i remember a player i think he played for Tranmere who would do a flip before throwing the ball.

Erich Schaedler made it famous first.

Ian Hutchinson from Chelsea did it before Shades.Didn't know that although I do have a vague memory of him as a player.

Probably someone used the tactic before him as well, although googles ai says De Lap "invented" it.

Sure he did [emoji849].

Should have been booked half the time given it took him about 5 mins to get his **** together.

Heard a football commentator on about the long throw-ins had faded a bit from the game for a while but are very much back now ..

If someone can launch them then a throw in the final third can be as effective as a corner.

However, statistics tend to show corners aren't that effective with about 1 in 30 leading to a goal.

:agree:

The roar that goes up when a corner is won always makes me smile. If you’re attacking and the ball goes out for a corner I’d hazard a guess your chances of scoring have suddenly reduced rather than increased :greengrin

A proper long throw has to be done on a rainy day with a muddy pitch so that the player has to use his jersey to clean all the muck off the ball.

Remember Shades taking a long throw at Firhill for Thrills in the Scottish Cup the ball got cleared back out to him and he returned it on the volley with interest into Roughies back top postage stamp corner

His throw in for Wee Jimmy’s opener at 0-7 wisnae too bad

Best exponent at the club just now Lewis Miller

Son informed me the other day that towels to dry the ball before a throw in are banned in the EFL now. Which I never noticed. Not sure if this is the case in Scotland.

Yes, he was the one I remember as well and was going to post, until I saw yours.

I read something once which said that the stats show short corners lead to more goals than directly crossed corners despite the groans that often from the crowd when a short corner is taken. Though I've just googled that and I can't find anything that supports that. It is roughly the same (in the EPL at least) according to Opta.

I quite like that we have a few players capable of a long throw. Miller and Newell are the two obvious ones but Obita isn't too shabby either.

Miller can even throw in a rocket from just over the half way line as well.

I think it's because of VAR and the potential for handballs which would never be spotted live by anyone but defenders now have to be super careful about.

As you cannot be offside from a throw in makes sense to use it if you have a player that can do it.

Rules on throw ins are massively relaxed now as well can’t mind the last time I saw a foul throw awarded won’t be missed on these ‘set piece coaches’ doing anything for an advantage

Was one last night in the Sunderland game. One that almost never gets called is a player stepping on the pitch when taking a throw in. I would say this happens at over 50% of throw ins and never seems to be called upon.
