To be fair even where we were when we got the job last summer 4th would have been a success nevermind being bottom in November

Its been an unbelievable turnaround.
At this point though, 4th would be a disappointment.

If it was August and you'd offered me 4th I'd have bitten your hand off. If we remove all the emotion from it then it would still be an achievement given our start.

From where we are now though? It has to be 3rd.

Agreed. I'd have taken top 6 and called it a chance to build further last summer.

4th would still be an achievement from where we were. But it’ll be disappointing to miss out on 3rd at this stage and I think we’re going to just miss it, unless we win the last two games. Don’t see Aberdeen messing up tomorrow and Celtic have admitted, in not so many words, they’re going to chuck Wednesday

4th minimum is a brilliant result for the season.

If we finish 4th, I’ll be disappointed we missed out on third but still delighted with the progress made this season.

Huge credit to everyone involved, the players, management team, Malky Mackay and all the back room staff.

Hopefully we go and finish the job now!

Why do you think Aberdeen are so good?

Exactly. Since they went 14 games without a win in the league they have managed to lose 5-1 to Celtic, needed a 91st minute equaliser to take a point at home to Dundee Utd, drew 0-0 with St Johnstone, ****ed up a 2-0 lead at home against 10 man Rangers and got beat by St Mirren.

A few wins against bottom 6 clubs and a disappointing win against us from our perspective.

Okay they’re in the Scottish Cup final but let’s not forget their run to get there was Elgin City, Dunfermline, Queen’s Park and 119 minutes against 9 men Hearts who are dug*****.

At what point did they turn into Barcelona since full time in our match today?

No way Celtic will "chuck" wednesday. I wouldn't be that surprised if Dons lost next 2 and went all out for cup final. Fairly confident for 3rd now. And yes...anything can happen.

At this point it still is. Aberdeen have discovered some form, but unless I imagined it they still lost at St Mirren and only beat us with a worldy. They have a chance against a hot and cold Sevco and a Celtic team that, by all accounts, won't be as strong as the one we faced today .... but that's all it is, a chance, not a foregone conclusion.

The fact is they need 6 points out of their next two games against Sevco and Celtic to go 3 points ahead of us, and even then that's only if we lose at St Mirren. As it stands I would still rather be in our position than theirs.

Probably already said elsewhere but on Sportsound pre-match they emphasised the huge difference financially between 3rd and 4th ( assuming Celtic win the cup). With 3rd place guaranteed European group football it will be worth at least £4.5m. This was based on the Tiny club's current European season which they reckoned was £6m income less costs. And that was with little in the way of win bonuses. They also said the likely financial benefits will be higher next season so potentially approaching £5m profit?
So let's not settle for 4th!!!!!

Rangers record against Aberdeen at Ibrox is exceptional. Fair chance Aberdeen will win at United who seem to have fallen off a cliff form wise. Need to take something from Paisley

If Celtc play like they did today in the final, there's no way Aberdeen are winning the cup, so it's game on for the last couple of fixtures.

The sickener in my opinion was the 90+ equaliser at rugby park. Would have third pretty much sown up. Thats football i suppose 😩

Prior to that Aberdeen game I genuinely just wanted us to not get relegated

If you are that convinced about Aberdeen rather than be a parrot on this thread go and visit the bookies.

They are 7/1 to finish third and you will get over 4/1 for them to win tomorrow.

I wouldn't say so much convinced about Aberdeen
Celtic are going to rotate and Rangers are keech. We won relatively easily at Ibrox and Aberdeen could as well. It's disingenuous to suggest he is being convinced by Aberdeen imo.

also seems convinced Celtic don’t want to beat Aberdeen up there too.
Third time in as many hours posting it so there’s nothing disingenuous about it.

I think we have to imagine Wednesday is a cup final - we need to go out, attack and win the game / get 3 points.

Aberdeen haven’t won 3 in a row for a long time so it will pretty impressive if they manage to do that now.

Tomorrow’s game against the Huns is very important - Barry Ferguson hasn’t won a home game yet so would be a good time to get a win - that would mean the Dons would then need to beat Celtic.

I have full faith in the Hibs boys to get it over the line but we need to do what we did against Dundee Utd and stand up and be counted.

Last week we secured 5th
Today we secured 4th
We've two goes at securing 3rd and with a gd that's effectively an extra point we remain in pole position. If Aberdeen somehow do win 3 games they'll have earned it. And if they win the Scottish Cup we'll just have to get on with that - again they'll have earned it. However, I don't remotely feel they can.

Either way, if someone said to me driving home in the snow from Dundee in November we'd finish 4th I'd have laughed my head off. And I'd have grabbed it. 3rd would be phenomenal but 4ths not some booby prize.

Let's do it Hibs

I think the club target a top 5 position as a bare minimum acceptable season, which will align with there being four clubs in the league who can (and do) outspend us.

I think at the start of this season, expectations were lowered somewhat by the clubs’ own messaging. Malky spoke right at the very start of his time about how his coming transfer window was when we’d see a difference in the team, and that the summer transfer activity last year was far from ideal in how it was planned.

Fourth place is a good achievement most years, more so this year with the terrible start to the season we had. That third is still in our hands shows how good a season it has been.

Any less than top 5 or a cup final and I'd say it is a less than satisfactory season.

I don’t think Celtic are ‘chucking’ Wednesday. They’ll play a weaker team but I think they’ll still win. If we get something from our game against St Mirren, we’ll get 3rd. The Rangers game would be a free shot. Barring a shock result in the Cup, we will qualify for the europa Cup.

To anyone worried about Aberdeen winning the final, I took a wee trip over to their fans forum to see their take on things, and it’s full of beauties like this:

True also but the guaranteed group stages are for the cup winners and not third place. Third place is our goal and group stages are a bonus. I do know what you mean but we can only do what we can do and 3rd will be a huge achievement regardless.

I’d be amazed if that awful Aberdeen side beat Celtic in the final but stranger things have happened.

Might come to bite me, but I'm not sure, watching them today, that Aberdeen have the stomach to go 100% in their last 2 games in the faint hope of grabbing 3rd. Think a few of them have checked out already and have their eyes firmly on the Cup Final. It will get the prize for 3rd place AND a rare Cup win.

The problem they have with this is Dundee United (and mathematically St Mirren).

They can’t put all their eggs in Scottish cup basket at the expense of risking a 5th, or even 6th place finish. Imagine the uproar if they if finish the speaks with no European football.

Do they rest players on Wednesday though to give it their all against Dundee United, accepting that they aren’t coming 3rd but aiming to Guarantee 4th?

Probably not, and understandably so, but it would be the logical thing to do for them IMO. 3rd is ours.
