A few days ago in my local supermarket as I went to the checkout with a few items there was a lady in front of me who when she had paid for her shopping asked me could she do something else and it would only take a minute..

I naturally took it she wanted a lotto or had forgotten something and told her ‘ sure that’s fine ‘ but instead she then said to the checkout girl while pointing in my direction that she wanted to pay for my groceries…

In total surprise I asked ‘ why do you want to do that? ‘ and she explained that she had lost her purse earlier and that’s what you do when you have had a bit of good luck/ fortune is share it …

I did a couple of times say there was honestly no need too but she really wasn’t taking no for an answer so I ended up with my groceries being paid for …

Left the supermarket slightly bewildered in a good way 😀

Spoke to a few people about this afterwards and some never heard of it happening before while others have …

I've definitely heard of people paying it forward in such a way before. I think the idea is you are now meant to do a good deed for someone else and so on.

For an odd one many years ago I was walking home on a winter night in Aberdeen. Weather was minging, sleet, below freezing etc etc. Anyway I was about 10 minutes from home and passed by this guy just sitting on a wall on his own wearing only a T shirt and jeans. He was soaked through and freezing. Other than that he looked in pretty good health and was clean, shaved etc. He didn't seem drunk or drugged. I definitely was! I asked if he was ok and got no reply. I said did he want me to call anyone. No reply. I asked if he wanted to head back to mine to get warm and call someone. He just nodded and followed (I'm aware this was pretty risky on my part). I made him a coffee, gave him some dry clothes and told him he could sleep on the sofa. He nodded a few thanks but said nothing and showed no inclination to talk when I spoke to him. I woke up the next morning and he was gone. There was a scribbled note that just said 'thank you' and my clothes were neatly folded.

I actually contacted the police as I thought the guy might have been pretty vulnerable, they took a few details but I never heard anything further. I've often wondered what his story was and what happened to him.

My son did the same thing one New Year on his way home except the guy raided his fridge and made him a full breakfast when he heard him getting up!

I was on a cruise and got friendly with a wee foreign family. In one port I saw them in a shop and of course the wee girl was wanting a toy but the mum and dad were having a hard time explaining they didn't have enough local currency. Muggings here bought it and said they it should be ice cream all round with the change!

I went to the wrong funeral many years ago, in fact not only was it the wrong funeral, the guy was actually alive and kicking. In the days before mobile phones and techy stuff normally you would hear of a death of a friend or a distant loved one via word of mouth or house phone if you were lucky to have one.

One drunken couple of hours in the local followed by a few more hours of mourning when one of our friends announced “big Malky” is dead, passed away suddenly in his sleep. Malky worked beside a few of them for many years as a plasterer and I knew him well from the pub and hibs games, he had moved down the borders for work and we saw less of him as the weeks and months passed.

Then there was the announcement that his funeral will take place at Seafield crem. We all turned up suited and booted and then it hit home, it wasnt our “big Malky” strangely enough we only knew his older Brother but not his parents or his younger Sister, but the attendees were or looked like they were no younger than their 80,s more so we felt like total fuds when the Minister said Malky was a staunch hearts fan and was also a much loved employee whos attendance at work was impeccable and he would be sorely missed by all who worked with him in the offices at Seafield Sewerage plant.

****ing bunch o fannies !!

For the record, “big Malky” is definitely deid now, I know that because I was at his funeral at Mortonhall 🤭

In fairness I didn’t actually think about or anyone mentioned about me doing a good deed for someone else . So thanks PB I will be continuing the good deed on someone else soon ..

Your story is indeed odd but interesting too . Thanks for sharing 👍

When I was a wee boy living and growing up on Albert Street someone got knocked down and there was a big crowd of people gathered round the ambulance, I ran across the road to see what was going on and I got knocked down too!

In Yugoslavia many years ago with my best mate, we were in the bar of our complex celebrating my birthday when we came across a guy wearing a Celtic top drinking on his own. As my mate and I were both ST holders at Anfield we both had a liking for Celtic due to the King Kenny connection.

We invited George to join us for drinks and explained it was my birthday and we would be going for food later on, he asked if he could join us for food and we agreed. During the night he explained that he was there with his wife and daughter, they done everything as a family during the day and the nights were free for him as his wife and young daughter both bedded early,he said they had seven nights left at the resort.

We had a fantastic evening and sat at the table after food downing drink after drink, we were absolutely smashed. At the end of the evening I could hardly stand. George stood up from the table wobbled and hit the deck, both me and my mate tried to get him up but we couldn’t due to the state we were in and were then approached by two of the complex armed security who told us very abruptly to leave him and return to our apartment and that they would deal with George. After trying unsuccessfully to convince them we could help we left.

The next day after a very long lie in we hit the bevvy again and went looking for George in the complex, no sign of him. We looked for him every day and night until we left six nights later and never came across him, we asked at reception and even approached the security guards but no one seemed to know anything.

We always and still to this day wonder….what happened to George?

When I was wee, 2-3ish, my mum used to take me swimming at the commonwealth pool before getting the bus down to Portobello to my grandparents.

One day we were on the bus heading down north bridge towards princes street, when a black woman got on wearing a fur coat. Apparently I jumped up off my seat and started shouting and pointing “THERES A BEAR GETTING ON THE BUS!!! LOOK! LOOK! A BEAR! THERES A BEAR GETTING ON THE BUS!”

My mum was mortified, everyone on the bus, including the poor lady in question, were all buckled laughing, and I’m told I spent the next few days telling everyone I knew that I’d seen a bear on the bus

Bumped into a guy in Tesco Leith one day a few years back, both greeted each other, I was sure I knew the face and he seemed to know me so after it was clear we couldn't really place each other I went through various places we could have met, Scottish Govt, Hibs, various 5 and 7 a side games....nothing. Then, thinking he knew me, he went through some from his side, Scottish Widows, Trinity Accies, The Old Chain Pier. None of any relevance to me. So we eventually exchanged names and turns out didn't know each other at all and didn't even seem to have any mutual friends! Total ridder for the pair of us.
