If he wants to spend more time with the family, let him.
Tell him to come back up on a Thursday and be ready for 20 minutes on a Saturday. Contribution is massive for minutes spent on the pitch.

While I agree he has been fantastic it should not be missed thats hes effective partly due to less glamorous team mates softening up and tiring the opposition - our use of subs has been a hallmark of our resurgence . So refreshing after what seems years and years of either no decent subs or managers that were inept at using the squad

The guy has been an absolute revelation.
His contribution to winning games, making games safe, seeing out games cannot be underestimated.
Fantastic contribution and awesome end product.
Whether he stays on a bit longer or he calls it a day at the end of the season his short time at the club will be held in the highest regard for many years to come.

He's very clearly a player that's played at a much higher level. He's the ideal substitute to bring on for any game and I don't mean that as a dig in any way. Us having that level of quality to bring on has been a massive factor in where we are and what he's contributed is beyond and above what I was actually expecting him to be capable of this stage of his career.
The guy is different class and just seems like a really really good lad and solid professional.
I'd absolutely love him to stay another season, just can' see it happening.
Made a comment after the match while Signing autographs and taking photos along the lines off "I wish I could" when asked about another season.

I'm never keen on these types of signings but Gayle has been superb and shows so much hunger along with his undoubted finishing power and game intelligence. I love seeing him flying into tackles when he comes on as much as the goals he scores.
His bursting a gut run at the end of the Match shows what a pro the guy is. A class act and hope we can get another season if he is up for it.

His contribution for the amount of time spent on the pitch has been outstanding.

He's a proper player. One of the best natural finishers we have ever had at the club. He may not have the legs to play more than 30 minutes now but he still has that killer instinct in front of goal. We absolutely must persuade him to give us another year. He won't have played in Europe before so hopefully that will tip the balance.

He's such a good player.
He's class. His experience at the highest level shows. Granted his body is not what it was and his legs have gone, but his head is a move or two ahead and that is so crucial. Cadden knew exactly where he was going to be when he crossed for the third.
Also, I imagine all our strikers will learn so much from him. His legacy will be more than goals and what we're seeing on the pitch.

I wouldn't be against signing him, but I assume he's on a good wage and if SDG decides to spend it differently I'd trust his judgement.
Gayle's goals and assists are top notch and he's a solid super sub who I'm glad we signed, but in a toss up I'd take a Boyle extension over him.

Doubt on major cash just been looking extend career but he's away from his family and think to regardless what Hibs want this will be his decision on next season. Class act been a great signing broken the mould of many before we have signed with pedigree who have been crap and just used Hibs as a last pay day. He gives a ***. He's played at a high level but, as far as I can see, has never played European football.
If we get this group stage place then I think he'd be tempted - even if only 6 month contract - to give it a crack. Some cracking games/trips to be a part of that I'm sure he/anyone would relish. The route to europe is an interesting appeal (in theory) to Scottish football - although likely more limited going forward as we drop down the coefficient I guess.

I’ve enjoyed Dwight Gayle in a hibs top, but the man will know his own limits. Seems to find unbelievable space constantly in the box. Top guy top pro. Sentimentality is a worry, if we can improve the team and upgrade on what we have be great. You have to commend Malky Mackay on how he sculpted this squad, myko Bowie Gayle Boyle youan hoilett, it’s been a real blessing having that range of forward power. All whilst quickly trimming the squad. But we’ve got move forward as a club and whilst on the front foot take advantage of the state of the squad and position we find ourselves in.

I'm sure if his body is up to it he will extend, dont know if he will las t the year, when your body says enough then you have to listen, I'm 57 just had a hernia and hips are screwed due to running and gym, been off work 5 weeks, first time my body has just said NO after an injury, it's weird and I can understand where hes coming from. Would love to see him extend, guys still got that quality. Great signing

If we get the European stage football I hope he stays for that as a player/unofficial coach type role in the squad. His quality for even 15 minutes at the end of games could be so imporant.
You only need to look at Hearts (failed) campaign this season to see that if you can get about 7/8 points you'll likely make it to the knockout rounds and having someone like him on the bench when we need to find a winner or equaliser away in deepest darkest Moldova would be so valuable.

Gayle’s replacement needs to be someone capable of having a similar type of impact to Gayle. Not every player is a first pick. Especially next season, if we get the group stage football, we need players who can come in and offer something when we need it. Boyle and Bowie will be your main two (I say Boyle as I do think he’ll be here). The back up to them aren’t going to be 15-20 goal strikers so an experienced player who can chip in, like Gayle has, could be really important for us.

My view is that I don't see the point of giving a contract to a 38 year old player when, with the BKG tie up, we're supposed to be shopping in a better market. Thanks for the memories, Steven, especially a day in March 18 years ago, but let's move on.

Some might think it's a stretch but I don't think we'd have got 3rd if we hadn't signed Gayle and Hoillet- 2 guys that were never going to play week in week out. That back's up how important players like that can be in the modern game.

There’s been a big change in the professional approach now in the club. At last we’ve got away from players being dropped when n fact they’ve been left out for various reasons. Everyone is a first team player-some will play more than others-but everyone is in the squad and will contribute. Hopefully some fans who complain about aplayer being “dropped” after playing well will catch on to what is actually going on.

You ought to read Gray, Newell and the rest of the squad's view on the impact Gayle and Hoillet have had on the team. Raised standards at the club as well as a touch of class around the place. It may not be Fletcher but we will be signing a 35+ year old in the summer
Maybe it’s resigning someone already here
I spoke with him a few weeks ago and he said he wanted to retire and spend more time with the family, fancies being an agent so he can still be involved in football but give more time to his kids.

This is a great point, I thought even during the tough times before we went on our run it stood out to me that Gray was trying to give minutes to keep everyone involved, and not just in a way that was trying to find his best 11. And now we see the spirit and belief that he has built and built in the squad. His selections have also given us consistently strong options from the bench to change games and that has played a big part.
And as i have just remembered this is the Dwight Gayle thread - what a guy. Not just up here for a holiday or going through the motions but has clearly still wanted to give everything to work hard and contribute.

Give me a 30 something top English based player over a youngster any day of the week.
The youngster could be the next Riordan or Brown. The oldie could be the next Kuqi. If only it were as easy as picking an age and where they are based.

I thought European football might sway Gayle towards extending. It's a big ask to put an old and broken body through a rigorous pre-season though.
I guess someone that professional just knows when it's the right time.

Sorry to see him go. A great dressing room is made up of a lot of characters and Gayle was the guy who'd done it all that others could look up to.

Even apart from the goals and assists, the work rate, infectious attitude and smarts helped turn us from a team who pissed away goals and points late in games to a team who closed out matches - either closing out tight matches or making them comfortable and putting them beyond reach.
He’s set a high bar for whoever follows him in that role and he’ll be very fondly remembered in years to come.

Am I the only one who thinks that in the future we will refer to any older player coming into the squad will be referred to as hopefully fulfilling the, 'Dwight Gayle' role? I’ve loved having him at Hibs, he’s made a real impact in the single season he’s been here. I wasn’t at the game but was able to view the action from afar, and it wasn’t until a WhatsApp exchange with a friend who was in attendance made him aware of the greatness of the finish. He had thought the cross had went straight in and it was a goalkeeping error letting it drift by into corner!

Light years ahead in his head, what age takes away can be managed if he fancies it, this is a deal we should be at least offering. 3 month rolling deal, review by both sides every renewal.
Place in the heart of most Hibbies forever.
Sent from my SM-A750FN using Tapatalk
I don't think he'd fancy that and it doesn't really suit anyone. There is life after football for Dwight Gayle and he sounds keen to embrace that. Not dipping his toe into retirement. Going for it. There is life after Gayle for hibs. A player, and a plan, that offers more stability than a rolling three month exit strategy.

He obviously is a family man as he seems to be making that a big part of his retirement, I believe his partner is from North East Scotland so hopefully he may be a regular visitor to the club.
He probably has made one of the biggest impacts of a short stay player, on and off park, for many a year. Sounds a very humble guy too.
Might convince him to spend some of his days off holidaying in East Lothian and training the young lads :-)

Dwight Gayle has revealed that he intends to return to watch Hibs in European competition after he plays what is expected to be his final game for the club.
The 35-year-old forward said earlier this season that he was minded to retire at the end of the campaign, and ahead of Saturday’s final game against Rangers, he was asked if the team’s recent form and European qualification had changed his mind on hanging up his boots.
“No, it’s not,” he said. “I’m going to come to the games, hopefully. I’ve spoken to a few people about coming with my little man and hopefully bringing him to some of the games abroad, which I’m really excited about, but I’m still fixated on retiring and getting back to my family.

It’s great for us that an established, respected pro who has played at many clubs goes with a great impression of us. I said when ALF left with the revelations in the podcast that it wasn’t a good thing.
Players talk and if someone goes to someone like ALF or Gayle as they’ve been approached by Hibs, it matters what they have to say.
I’m sure Dwight will be telling a few young players that we’re a great club to play for and a good step in their career.

I can’t think of another player who’s been at Hibs for only one season, to have become so loved and appreciated by the fans. Dwight is an absolute class act, a superb footballer who I feel privileged to have seen playing for Hibs. His performances this season haven’t shown any signs of being a player who’s about to retire, he’s given everything and produced some brilliant moments. I’m gutted to see him go, but hope he enjoys his retirement, it’s well earned.
The epitome of a professional footballer. He’s came in and rather than rest on his laurels and go through the motions he’s lead by example and showed pure class pure class runtime he pulled on the jersey. From posters on here I believe he’s been different class in training too.
I can only hope he might influence other players of his calibre (I know money might play a part for some) who are in the twilight of their careers to come to Hibs.

SDG has mentioned this quite a bit and its character.
That’s and to still have the desire to show he can still perform. His goal at Tiny Park was just brilliant from the minute he sprinted to keep it in to the desire to get into the box in front of the defender and then to finish.

A very humble guy who has had a few down moments as a teenage footballer, he persisted, worked hard and got his rewards. I think Gayle has taken that attitude and used it throughout his professional career, of course he had to negotiate a wage to join us but he gave his all every time he stepped onto that pitch and he never took us for granted.
