I remember when he got me into trouble with Eddie Turnbull when they trained at the Jack Kane Centre by asking me to move a cone. Turnbull thought I was stealing it and called me a little [censored].

Jim Herriot told him I was helping and Turnbull then thanked me and said I was a good lad.😁

Thank you, Jim,for one of my best childhood memories.

RIP.

Aww no. Terrible news. A great commanding goalkeeper and real Hibs legend.

Mind you, the Tornados were so good in some games, Jim hardly got near the ball. He had a great view of some of the best football ever played.

I always remember seeing videos of the Tornadoes when I was younger and being fascinated with him smearing black boot polish under his eyes.

Such sad news. Another childhood hero gone. He was a marvellous keeper for us and played several times for Scotland. He had a game against Hajduk Split we'd all rather forget and Eddie Turnbull never selected him again. It doesn't seem any less unreasonable with the passage of time. I don't know what exactly he was blamed for but, as we've seen this season, goalkeeping errors happen and some keepers bounce back from them better than others. I'm sure Jim would have bounced like Zebedee given the chance.

RIP, Big Man, and condolences to your family on your loss.

I was too young to see Jim play in real life, but know of his huge part in our history. He also came across well in his more recent interviews. Condolences to his friends and family.

(I've considered changing my username, but I'm going to leave it for the time being. Hope no-one sees that as inappropriate.)

RIP the real Jim Herriot, from the fake Jim Herriot.

Keep it as an ongoing tribute.

Anecdotally, the author of All Creatures Great and Small adopted James Herriot as his nom de plume after seeing Jim play for Birmingham City. I read that in Wikipaedia so I can only hope it’s true.

Saw him for Dunfermline v Celtic in 1965 Cup final. Then enjoyed his work for us. He used to smear mud on his cheeks to combat the glare from floodlights.
Classy keeper who should have been capped more often.

My Dad speaks so warmly about Herriot, as well as the others of that era.

I imagine the cup winning side will pass into the club’s history in the way the tornadoes have, but what a side they must have been

Yip had a black top and a yellow top white shorts and green socks that he used to fold over at the top to reveal a white band don’t think he even bothered with gloves unless it was muddy ( had a white pair that he kept in his cap behind the goals ) sad I know

I think the OP might have meant Willie Wilson who was the quintessential Man in Black

Absolutely true James Herriot / Author real life Alf White , Veterinary surgeon in Thirsk (he was listening to a radio commentary and got the inspiration for the name, he was also a Scot I believe )

In the interview with the Scotsman he recalls how he gave White one of his Scotland shirts and White gave him a first edition of the book when they met.

You hardly see him because Hibs are so dominant but he wore a black shirt in the 7-0 game. Kenny Garland in the Hearts goal was all in black.
