John Beaton has made plenty mistakes in the past and some we have been on the wrong end of. In the big games you are really hoping the referee gets the big calls right. Credit where it is due for his display in the Aberdeen v Hearts semi final for a good performance.
First red card obviously correct in denying the goalscoring opportunity, one that isn't debatable. Likewise, first yellow card for Devlin not one that could be up for debate - over the top of the ball and catches the boy on the ankle.
I would credit Beaton again for keeping the game 10 v 11 for as long as he did and not ruining it as a spectacle (even though both sides offered little). The boy Devlin with shows of dissent, shirt pulls, two handed shoves and numerous fouls should really have walked before he did. Catching Polvara late at the edge of the box was a step too far though.

As Hibs have shown this season in going from bottom of the pile to securing a top 6 place, anyone can improve. Hopefully John Beaton can put past errors behind him and build on that performance, the Scottish game needs more of it. In striving to do so, hopefully he can rise above the social media trolling. Some of the personal attacks and threats of violence don't have a place in Society. I would look to those in charge of the Hearts to quell that misplaced rage by ways of a sensible balanced communication to their followers, one where they take ownership for their own failings. Don't think anyone wants a frothing at the mouth crowd of middle aged cardigan wearing men sporting maroon 'make Hearts great again' baseball caps. Lets keep it dignified chaps. May the best team win and all that.

I mentioned on a different thread, and this is to John Beaton's massive credit, have a look at that first red card incident again

It's during a lightning quick counter attack by Aberdeen, where the Dons have cleared the ball quickly in transition from a Hearts attack

The quickest player on the park has burst clear, and been fouled (last man foul - red)

And here's the point...

Look at John Beaton's position. It's close to perfect.

That means he has outsprinted and outrun the Hearts midfield to get there

Fair play to him, that's good refereeing.

And if I was Hearts, I'd be asking "why is my midfield of Devlin and Baningame being outpaced by the ref?"

That's their real problem here, not John Beaton, who was in a great position for all the big calls

I’m not going to start to pretend that Beaton is a wonderful referee just because of some decisions that Hearts are unhappy about. We’ve had our own gripes with Beaton and others, but interestingly those decisions we bemoan appear to take the place more when we are struggling, and strangely the poor decisions are less prevalent and examination of refereeing performance is considerably less, and often non existent when we are playing well and enjoying good wins.

It’s natural to start to apportion blame onto others rather than take responsibility for your own failures when form deserts.

We’ve all bore the brunt of some poor calls, but nobody has went to the lengths that Hearts, their fans and media cheerleaders have with this one.

Toys have never been thrown further from prams than what we have seen from the Tynecastle adult crèche this last week.

He's another poor referee generally but to be fair to him he had a good game in the semi. Got all the big calls right.

VAR for the Motherwell game.

P.S both sending offs correct last weekend.

Beaton is terrible but refereed out of skin in that semi. A career best performance he’ll never match

The first time I ever saw Beaton referee a game was the Cup tie at Kilmarnock when Griffiths scored his hat trick. I think he was a late replacement due to injury and he certainly gave us a fair crack of the whip that day. He's had some stinkers since right enough but he is by no means the worst.

Beaton had a good game last week and I think there are worse refs than him.The standard of refereeing in this country is poor overall but things should even themselves out over the season. The one ref I have my doubts about is Kevin Clancy. Clancy is poor but I always feel that there is more than just incompetence at play when he is involved in our games.

Great post.

I’ll also add that no team have had a run of such ridiculous refereeing calls against than we did in the early months of 2024; absolutely shocking seemingly week in week out for about six weeks crucial decisions going against us.

I read on kickback that Clancy was in their view one of the better refs. After the Vargas penalty decision I am in two minds.

However I remain of the opinion that our referees are generally just not very good rather than corrupt. They are subconsciously influenced by big crowds.

On Saturday I have equally heard Aberdeen fans complain about Beaton. I felt he had a reasonable game and nothing hugely controversial.

I watched the VAR review earlier and was glad they backed Beaton and showed the Hearts’ complaints to be the nonsense that they are.

I did take issue with their discussion on Nisbet’s handball against Rangers for the contrast to how United’s disallowed goal against us was discussed.

In this instance, as with the United incident, the referee didn’t see the handball and awarded the goal.
In both incidents, VAR had to rely on multiple angles and slow motion to see the handball, which they did.
Only in our one they complained about the VAR not seeing it (they did, you can hear them say it in the audio), and then went on to say the VAR intervention was wrong.

The discussion on Rangers’ disallowed goal in the same game was interesting as well - the ball is evidently out of play, the linesman got it right but you have VAR operators now **** scared to say that the ball is out when it clearly is - I think We’ve been gaslit to the point where VAR will never make a call on a ball going over the line again.
