View Full Version : Least appearances with the biggest impact

The two that come to mind for me are

1. Conrad Logan
8 appearances yet played a pivotal role in winning the Scottish Cup, especially the semi where he saved two penalties

2. George Best
17 appearances that lit up Scottish football
He may have still been on the bevvy sadly but he was still capable of an exquisite touch and a pinpoint pass

Any others?

It would take something extraordinary to beat what Conrad Logan done for us

Seeing the highlights of the semi come up the other day was a reminder. Dragged us into the final, won the cup, and just like that he disappeared just as mysteriously as he arrived.

I'm trying to think about the circumstaces around him. I'm sure he was a late signing in the season, probably even before transfer windows were a thing? He might've been injured for a wee bit but then got chucked in and couldn't stop scoring, think he even got one at Celtic Park and there were the usual Daily Record headlines of Celtic taking him at the end of his Toulouse contract form under our noses. He went to Norwich after us and was a bit of a let down from memory.

A late equaliser at Celtic Park, and he also scored 2 late consolation goals in a 2-5 hammering from Celtic at ER, so 3 of his 5 goals were against them - and he was the one player who performed quite well in the cup final against them. Not really a shock that they were interested as he was potentially available for free.

It was actually 5 goals in 13 games in total, but he was pretty memorable.

Isak Refvik & Sven Mathisen played 7 and 3 games respectively with Refvik scoring twice, on his debut, against Morton in the League Cup.

The two Norwegians, who arrived from Viking Stavanger and I K Start, briefly lit up the cold winter of the 1978/79 season before issues with their playing visas saw their Hibernian careers sadly cut short.

It begins and ends with Conrad Logan.

Some folk spend years at a club and are forgotten months after they leave, including at this club. Conrad Logan played 8 ( eight ) games for Hibs and became a never to be forgotten legend.

It's like some sort of fantasy story .... a giant emerges from the mists of Ireland, a wobbly mysterious figure nobody knows about. He looks as suited to the role of hero as fly in the air, but in the space of 130 plus minutes he changes everything and then sticks around for another 90 + 4 to cement his legend, before wandering back into the mists never to be seen again.

Did Conrad Logan ever even really exist :greengrin

You've all missed the biggie

Dave Beaumont.

Iirc by the time of his third game he was unbeaten.

Game 1 I can't recall... but...
Game 2 he won the league cup v dunfy
Game 3 was 1-1 in the Derby where we paradëd the cup

So in 3 games he had played vs Medals Mackay & Levein, been unbeaten in his Derby AND won more medals than those jambos would win in their entire career

He has had a massive impact since he came in, his mentality is spot on, got the players up for things with his crunching tackles tireless work and in players faces, he was just what we needed and obviously his goals and assists.

Beaumont played 80 times for the club before leaving to join the Police, so he played a reasonable amount of games.

He won a League Cup medal without having kicked a ball for the club yet after being an unused sub in the final.

His first goal came against Anderlecht at Easter Road.

Why did we sign him on such a short contract? He was on triall or naybe 3 month contract. He was still recovering from a (knee?) injury. Putting him on a long contract was a risk. When he destroyed Dundee we tried to sign him but Celtic had already waved their knickers.

As a team I think Turnbull's Tornadoes didn't play an awful lot of games together as the full team, maybe 30-40 due to injuries and suspension, Joe Harper signing and ET making changes. Is there anyone that can confirm that one way or other.

Pretty sure the Tornadoes only played 22 games together as Brownlie was out injured for a few months and Edwards got a hefty suspension?

Might be wrong

A wee bit less than I thought but I knew it wasn't Sure Jim Herriot got dropped after the Hadjuk Split game and they never collectively started a match again.

What an impact they made though. Over 50 years later and we still talk about them. I was so lucky to grow up with them on the park.

From a personal point of view growing up as a schoolboy in the sixties I was totally devastated when Colin Colin Stein left us to join the dark side for the then Queen’s ransom of £100k

I need not have worried we signed Joe McBride Snr a natural goalscorer from Celtic who made us forget all about Stein scoring a hat-trick against Lokomotiv Leipzig in his home debut and scoring all types of goals for us but was always in the right place at the right time with a true strikers instinct and could also score goals out of nothing the highlight being a half volley on the edge of the box against Celtic at ER in a 2-0 win after previously opening the scoring

He would go on to score 58:91 and left when he refused Tom Hart’s request to relocate to Edinburgh from Glasgow

Gordon Strachan also made his mark in a testimonial (think it might have been Gordon Hunter's) when he was Coventry player/manager. My memory's a bit hazy but I think he played the first half for Coventry and the second half for Hibs, scoring a penalty to win us the game. Might be wrong about that though. Whatever, it was nice to finally see him in a Hibs shirt after so many years of wondering what might have been.

Yeah that was bizarre sent off after 6 minutes for a horrendous mistimed tackle on Gordon Strachan versus Man United in Big Gogs Rae’s Testimonial in a 0-3 loss in front of 14000

Spoiled the game as a spectacle

Ref might have had a word with Alex Miller and told him to sub him off but actions have consequences

Prematch Strachan had asked the Hibs players to go easy on him as he was a Hibby

Loved Big Gordon Rae and Super Joe
