View Full Version : Away to St Mirren for 3rd time post split?
The top 6 teams are due the following fixtures after the split
Celtic - 2 home & 3 away
Rangers - 3 home & 2 away
Hibs - 2 home & 3 away
Dons - 2 home & 3 away
United - 3 home & 2 away
St Mirren - 2 home & 3 away
Celtic
(H) Hibs & St Mirren
(A) Rangers, Dons & United
Rangers
(H) Celtic, Dons & United
(A) Hibs & St Mirren
Hibs
(H) Rangers, United & St Mirren
(A) Celtic & Dons
Dons
(H) Hibs & Celtic
(A) Rangers, United & St Mirren
United
(H) Celtic, Dons & St Mirren
(A) Hibs & Rangers
St Mirren
(H) Rangers & Dons
(A) Celtic, Hibs & United
Celtic, Rangers, Dons, United & St Mirren all have the correct number of home and away games to make 19 home & 19 away fixtures - Hibs will potentially play 20 home & 18 away fixtures.
The SPFL will not allow this to happen as it would give us a slight advantage over Dons & United in the chase for 3rd-5th place so i think they will probably switch the St Mirren game so we play 19 home & away and St Mirren will get 20 home & 18 away as they are not in the running for a European place.

Have we ever had a season where we have played 20 games at home whilst in the top flight?

How have we ended up with a league structure where this **** occurs? One way or the other, a team is getting shafted, probably us!

We knew the deal when signing up to it.
Other clubs could argue they were shafted by having less home games than us before the split.
IMO with the split, it’s just one you need to accept you’ll win some and you’ll lose some, over the course of the seasons it’ll even itself out.

“ There'll be an anomaly of some sort.
Aberdeen, Celtic, Hibs and St Mirren will all have played 17 games pre split, one of them will have 20 home games this season.”
Seen that on Twitter.
If one of us has to benefit, it should be Hibs as a reward for being the best placed team at the point of the split.

2018/19 season Hearts played 18 home 20 away, Motherwell played 20 home 18 away.
That's the most recent example I could find but I'm sure it's happened a few times. There's a fair chance we'll get 20 home games.

Surely that would be Celtic?
Plus I think with the fact they've got heehaw left to play for, that would probably be the fairest, too.

Celtic would take that to the court of human rights if that were to happen.
Probably get David Winnie involved and try and sue the league for £10m.

Never underestimate the sheer mentalness of that lot*
* I may also have got mixed up and were suggesting they were going to lose out on a home game.

And this is where Scottish football is unique.
Leave it to a computer/algorithm to work the post split fixtures. All other countries would.
No chance.
I posted on another thread the reasons why it is not left to the computer/algorithm. Celtic v Rangers will not be the 1st game post as the SPFL will not want it to be a league decider. They will not give us 20 home games (as they should) as they will not want to disadvantage Aberdeen or Dundee Utd. And finally the SPFL will liaise with the Aberdeen supporting SNP minister who likes his freebies to ensure it fits in with his busy diary.
The SPFL will be all over this phannying about with it.

Good point.

We're due a home game against them.
We are... but is that any different to "we're due 2 home games"?
Given the revenue etc involved it would feel more sensible to balance out the home/away split overall before ensuring we'd correctly done it between the teams on a H2H basis.
Plus the solution would still have that problem as we're due Rangers at home. :greengrin

Would we have made the top 6 section if the league split after the second round this season?
I’m still for the 6/8 split regardless so just asking out of curiosity, whilst I suppose also pointing out a potential flaw in that league structure.

It’s a game of opinions so each to their own but I find that mental.
We’ve found a way of making a 1 horse race exciting for all teams in the league (apart from Rangers), the split is brilliant imo.

Not enough teams in Scotland to move to 18 team league which you’d need to avoid a split

The split is a very good concept. :agree:
Made this weekend 10x more interesting and now it's round robins between the teams competing. Hibs, Sheep, Utd chasing for 3rd and every game in the bottom 6 will be a big one as anyone can finish 11th.

I also like the split…unless you end up bottom 6…
But also want a bigger league and not playing Celtic X 6 a season like this season

Hibs, Aberdeen and Dundee United are battling for third, so have to be kept equal. That means all three teams need to have 19 home and 19 away games, and none of them can visit Parkhead or Ibrox for a third time.
So the only practical solution is for us to play St Mirren away.

You’re ignoring the positives to the split though.
Today generated a lot more excitement, and hilarity, than we’d have got from a normal boring splitless league.

Hearts would have treated our game against them at Tynie as this season’s cup final (well, apart from their Aberdeen SF game). Glad they now have zero say in our march to group stage European football. Enjoy the bottom six and relegation scrap you losers.

Unfortunately they do still have a say as if they win the cup it stops us getting group stage football.
Aberdeen winning the semi next week which then distracts them from the remaining league games really would be perfect.

There cannot be any serious argument made where Aberdeen or the Yam would beat Celtic in the final at Hampden.
Any hopes they have are built on fantasy and delusion.

I recall we had Celtic and Rangers at Easter Road in successive games post split, Mixu was the manager. Can't recall the reasoning for that! Possibly the 20 home, 18 away scenario, though unlikely as both Celtic and Rangers were still fighting for the title. We drew both games IIRC.
