Incredible to think that SDG is a relative young whipper snapper of a manager at 36!
Probably seen more intense experiences than most at this stage.
And here he is.
Fair play to Malcolm MacPherson who went against the advice of Sir Alex not once but twice. Looks like this time we’re onto something.

What a man. Let’s hope he builds a managerial legacy in addition to his undisputed one as a player and capitano.

Would love him to stay here for a good few years and be successful. We need a bit of consistency and stability. This manager revolving door we’ve had is no good.

He is a club legend already as it stands, he has the backing of everyone and everyone is desperate for him to do well. No doubt he will have attracted the attention of a few clubs recently but hopefully he’s not tempted just yet and stays a while and builds something really good.

He’s a new manager still learning, there will be ups and downs undoubtedly but he’s got a fanbase who will stick with him.

I remember folk slagging off Malcolm MacPherson for appointing SDG because he was his "mate".

Or maybe that was someone else. :hmmm:

That was Malky. I’ve no idea what the Fergie comment relates to 🤔

Yes, you're quite correct.

It was Malky, not Gray.

I've no idea about the Ferguson reference either.

In summary - don’t opt for rookie managers.

In an interview (think it was in the Hibs Observer or The Scotsman) around the time he took his position for the second stint he talked of his having to sack Sauzee. He said he’d attended a talk given by SAF. Fergie advised the audience against hiring rookie managers it rarely ends well let them make their mistakes elsewhere kind of thing.

Malcolm took the other option.

I love Gray and what he's done for the club, but I do wonder if the hire and fire policy previously has set us back. If we had the same level of patience with previous appointments, would we have been in the same place? Who knows. I've seen thread upon thread over the years where, it seems, instant success and "playing the Hibs way" is the be all and end all and a couple of "bad" losses put the manager on a shoogly peg.

I'm glad we broke the mould and stuck with Gray after the start he had. I just hope that if next season doesn't get off to a great start that we don't have short memories. Football can be very short-termist and it's clear Gray is building something. Hopefully the club, and we, the fans, can allow him to do that

”"Franck expressed his interest in taking over and Alex felt he could do the job. Every Hibs supporter in the country wanted Franck as the next Hibs manager, including me. I remember Sir Alex Ferguson speaking from the top table at that same Football Writers dinner, and he said that big clubs who appointed rookie managers were off their heads. 'It never works,' he said, explaining that managers had to learn their trade. Clearly, I wasn’t listening hard enough."Sauzée notoriously lasted just 69 days in post and recorded just one victory - a Scottish Cup replay against Stranraer after a goalless draw at Stair Park. McPherson has previously said that relieving 'Le God' of his duties was the most difficult thing he’d ever had to do.

"Franck was such a joy; a lovely man, but it just didn’t work out," McPherson says ruefully. "I went with Rod Petrie to see Franck to tell him we couldn’t go on before a game against St Johnstone that we had to win to keep away from the relegation zone. I was in his beautiful New Town flat with his delightful wife and when I told him we had to let him go he was relieved. He told me the Hibs manager needed to go, '****, ****, ****'. These were his exact words. What he meant was, we needed a hard-man manager, and that wasn’t his style."

Are there any other managers in England and Scotlands top two leagues younger than SDG ? Only one I can think of at the moment is Brightons manager Hurzeler 🤔

Danny Rohl is 35 but there won’t be many younger than SDG.
