Museum of flight (East Fortune) then a day at the beach, wander around North Berwick (maybe the Law) and a visit to one of the old fashioned sweetie shops there.

I agree conifox is superb. Also the Five sisters Zoo is worth a visit.

If the sun is shining then the Fort Douglas park within Dalkeith Country Park is fantastic.

You do have to book and pay though, you can’t just rock up.

A bit further afield, I reckon the swimming pool in Dundee is probably the best leisure pool in the country these days. Maybe not worthy of a trip in itself, it’s great if already in the area.

I quite like the Kelpies/Helix park. Free if you can bag a space in the smaller car park.

If the weather holds up then we regularly go to Yellowcraigs/Broad Sands beach near North Berwick. Plenty rockpools for kids to explore, a big play area near the car park, toilets on site and quiet enough that you can usually get a spot.

For something slightly more adventurous then the Pentlands have plenty family friendly walks. The Capital View Walk starts and ends at Hillend and goes round the top of the ski slope. Great views of Edinburgh and the Forth, fully signposted and a decent pair of shoes and a bottle of water is all you need. I first took my daughter when she was 4 and she managed it no bother.

If the weather turns I think the free entry museums in Edinburgh are some of our best resources. The thankfully saved People's Story is my favourite but the Museum of Childhood and National Museums are both brilliant as well. I also like the Museum of Edinburgh in Huntly House.

Museum of Flight is well worth a visit. Alternatively there is the 'mound' at Ingliston where you can watch planes take off and land. It's not uncommon for the pilots to wave to kids standing there when they are on their taxi to either take off or after landing which always gives the bairns a wee thrill.

You can take a picnic and bikes to East Fortune and practically spend the whole day.

The cafe is good too and serves drink iirc.

Concord is now included in your ticket price and they have some really good interactive simulator type stuff for the kids/overgrown children like me.

Almond Valley in Livi is great for the kids. Animals to see, things to climb and explore, toboggan runs, trampolines, sand pits. Great for my two who are 4 and 1
