View Full Version : Champions League if The Rangers win the Europa League

It was mentioned on one of the podcasts that in the unlikely event that The Rangers win the Europa League 3rd place would get champions league. Would that be the case?

Would be strange but England now get 5 spots in the 'Champions' League

I believe that 3rd place would get the qualification route currently going to 2nd place because Rangers who are going to come 2nd would be removed from the equation due their Europa league win qualification spot.
That would mean a qualifying round (or more than one?) for the Champions league, dropping into the Europa league group stages like Rangers did this year if we lost.
Basically as hugely unlikely as it is to happen, Rangers winning the Europa League would be great for us, also providing the fall back of a Europa league qualification round and guaranteed conference league group stages (our current hope from 3rd) if we were to finish 4th (unless Hearts or St Johnstone won the cup).
I think this is all at least slightly accurate 😂

As long as we're still guaranteed group stage football, would be just like us to get into one of the CL qualifying rounds that arbitrarily doesn't drop down to the Europa.

It was bad enough that if Hibs got 3rd I'd have to cheer on Celtic, now you're telling me it's Rangers too?
Wait, would that Champions league spot go to the cup winners? If rangers win the europa and Hearts win the Scottish cup and get our champions league football then I'm out.

Would the cup winners if not Celtic only be guaranteed what the team who got the champions league being 3rd position would have got as the champions league position is based on league position. So potentially the top 6 could all qualify for European football. My brain hurts

If The Rangers win the Europa Cup, they would enter the Champions League qualifying.
If a team other than Celtic win the Scottish Cup, they would enter Europa League qualifying.
The team in third place would take Champions League qualifying spot.
The teams finishing 4th and 5th would enter Conference League, if St Johnstone win the cup. 6th place would qualify, if St Johnstone don't.
Is my understanding.

Hightly unlikely scenario though. If The Rangers can't beat Quuens Park, St Mirren, Motherwell and Hibs at home, they are not going to worry the other teams remaining in the Europa League.

Nico Williams vs Tavernier will hopefully just be amusing. I might even watch.

Just reading England now get 5 CL places after arsenals win last night and it could potentially increase to 7 if other teams perform in Europe.
I like the new CL format but a country getting 7! Or even 5 places is way off. Given Scotland doesn’t even get an automatic group stage place it’s a bit of a farce

As we have already dined at the top table of a European cup Semi final.unlike a certain team from Gorgie.
Rangers will be lucky to reach the Semi finals, so no be holding out much hope for them winning it.

It’s farcical at the moment, soon to be beyond that. 25% or 33% of EPL clubs in the CHAMPIONS league? Let’s go back to the old champions only format.

As we know, it’s all about the money and getting the biggest clubs into the tournament rather than having representation from many of the associations. Quite sad really that it’s being run for the big guns rather than for everyone.
We have the same with SPFL though. Everything built around 2 clubs.

Not as I understand it. All that would happen is that Rangers would get directly into the champions league group stage, skipping the qualifying rounds.

They have a higher coefficient than Celtic seemingly
Seems bizarre you can pick up more points on the EL/CL than Celtic do in the champions League
To be fair Celtic have been rank rotten in the CL for a number of years

they almost won it in 2022 and i was actually cheering them on as I knew some people who were there and it wasn't a game that affects hibs. Domestically that's a bit different but this was Europe

Where I’m at with this is … when hertz were in Europe is it not in our best interest they do well too ? , you want them to do well ? Personally I wanted the bu**ers knocked out as soon as possible as I do other teams we are competing with in our league …
As to Sevco … I hate them with a passion and hoping they win a European trophy I don’t want to see EVER even if it helps us marginally.

Hearts euro wins for coefficient are marginal. If we end up 3rd then qualifying for the champions league would probably be a once a once in a lifetime event.

If it’s the same as this season and Huns winning meant we’d get the prize for second place, then we’d enter the Champions League third qualifying round. Lose that, as the Huns did this year, then straight into the Europe League group stage.

I remember last time when they were in the final against Frankfurt I was on the fence about whether to support them or not. Maybe it would be good if a Scottish team won one of the big cups. Might be nice. Maybe I'll watch as a neutral.
Then I walked through the neighbouring village and saw the locals had got out not their Saltires, but their Red Hand flags. **** 'em.

I can't handle this needing Celtic to win the cup and now cheering on the Huns to win the Europa league for a chance at champions league football 😁
If the unlucky did happen and they won it, what round would 3rd place go to and what would happen to original spot for 3rd and Celtic win the cup? Would it go to 4th place I would imagine?

We can't get champions league football unless we finish 2nd.
Alternatively to gain Europa Conference League group stage football we just need to finish 3rd and hope Celtic win the SC.

For me. You are in the right. The only thing that benefits hibs long term is our own progress. Winning our own games. We might get a short term boost if hearts win a certain game. Ultimately though. Hearts winning any game is only good for Hearts. So **** that. **** them.

Mathematically still able to get 2nd if we win the remainder of our games and Rangers lose all there's, but we'd probably rather see Rangers beat the sheep this weekend followed by 3 points for us, meaning we'd have a 4 point gap.

Any game that directly impacts us I want it go our way, I can even hold my nose and say I want Hearts/Celtic/Rangers to beat whoever.
If it has no impact on us then I want them HUMPED. Finals, Europe, friendlies, the ****ing lot. Rangers v Frankfurt? Give me a Stein and a Frankfurter and 'mon the Germans.

Correct. I'm surprised how many people want hearts to make the top six and then achieve wins when they get there. Hopefully they don't take confidence from these wins into the cup. We have seen ourselves what a bit of form and confidence can achieve.
I prefer them to lose every game. It's better that way.

Even though we could possibly benefit for me the price is too high in seeing that lot lift a European Trophy and whatever financial rewards that brings.
After they’ve lost to St Mirren , Motherwell and Hibs at Ibrox I’m hoping that Bilbao will be to much for them and we see a few Spanish goals rattling in tonight and the hun hordes walking away again .:greengrin

Bit of it here. Mon Athletico 😁
While winning the Europa League would send Rangers straight into the Champions League league phase, their spot from finishing second in the Scottish Premiership would not pass to the third-placed team in Scotland.
UEFA's new rules state that if the Europa League winners have already qualified for the Champions League through their domestic league position, the vacant spot is allocated to the club with the highest individual coefficient among all teams in the Champions League qualifying rounds.
But finishing third in the Premiership still puts Hibs in the land of opportunity.
They will know that finishing third will guarantee, at least, a place in the Europa League second qualifying round. However, if Premiership champions-elect Celtic win the Scottish Cup, the Europa League play-off
