Now mathematically impossible for Hibs to be displaced from top 6 according to Evening News
What an achievement for SDG and the squad

Great stuff, I didn't realise as it's effectively a 7 point gap (with the GD) and there's still 9 to play for, but I assume it's because there's no combination of results that means the 4 below us can all get above us?

That's exactly it, great opportunity to nail down 3rd in the next few games GGTTH

That went under the radar! I'm sure Hibs never realised this after the game. Brilliant achievement from Gray and the team. Have to keep pushing now to finish as high as possible - places will go to the wire but we have put ourselves in a great position. Home games v St J and Dundee will likely be tougher than some would expect as they are fighting at the bottom with their own agendas, no games in this league are easy. Win them though and can't see us not qualifying for Europe in one of the spots - hopefully 3rd

I wonder in how many of our top six finishes we have had it confirmed this early.
Absolutely incredible given our league position - and how far behind Aberdeen we were - in late November.

Pretty certain looking at the remaining fixtures and League table that this isn’t correct. Is it just me?
Mathematically I’m pretty sure sure Aberdeen, Dundee United, Hearts and Motherwell could all get ahead of us and drop us to 7th

Remember hearts and Motherwell play each other though so they both can’t overtake us.

Motherwell play both Aberdeen and Hearts. Hearts also play Dundee Utd.
There are going to be teams cutting each others throats plenty over the next few weeks. We really need to make sure we take advantage.

So, current league table is:
3. Hibs 44
4. Aberdeen 43
5. Dundee United 41
6. Hearts 39
7. Motherwell 38
Worst case scenario results would be as following then:
Matchday 31
Motherwell beat Aberdeen (Motherwell move up to 41, Aberdeen stay on 43)
Hearts beat Celtic (Hearts move up to 42)
Dundee United beat Ross County (United move up to 44)
Hibs lose to St Johnstone (Hibs stay on 44)
Matchday 32
Motherwell beat Kilmarnock (Motherwell move up to 44)
Aberdeen beat Ross County (Aberdeen move up to 46)
Hearts beat Dundee United (Hearts move up to 45, United stay on 44)
Hibs lose to Rangers (Hibs stay on 44)
Matchday 33
Aberdeen beat Rangers (Aberdeen move up to 49)
Dundee United beat St Johnstone (United move up to 47)
Motherwell beat Hearts (Motherwell move up to 47, Hearts stay on 45)
Hibs lose to Dundee (Hibs stay on 44)
That would leave the table for instance
3. Aberdeen 49
4. Dundee United 47
5. Motherwell 46
6. Hearts 45
7. Hibs 44
So evidently, it’s extremely unlikely but not mathematically impossible as of yet.

No bother . It’s been some run we have been on when you think back to the Aberdeen game where we could have been something like 25 points behind them and now we are the 3rd team that’s guaranteed a top 6 place with 3 games to spare. Hopefully we push on now for 3rd in the league 👍

Yep the EEN have taken the Opta chances of it happening which is 1% for us not to be top 6, and decided that meant assured. Its not assured but you would make a fortune at the bookies betting against it

Assuming the combination previously posted above is the only possible route...
It needs the next game week to see wins for Motherwell, Hearts, St J, and Utd.
That is priced at 600/1.
Assuming the next 2 rounds of fixtures were equally unlikely to happen the odds of all 3 would be 216,000,000/1
Which leads me to belive I've done something horrendously wrong in my workings, or this is significantly the most improbable week... either way, it's not 50/1. :greengrin

If Motherwell and Aberdeen draw Hibs can still finish seventh, but if Hearts draw with Celtic we can't finish lower than 6th. I think there's also a way for St Mirren to finish in the top six too - but if they do it guarantees a top six finish for us (involves Motherwell losing two out of their three games).

Yeah, feel we have to win the 2 pre split home games for 3rd. Will have tough post split fixtures with only 1 non old firm home game whilst our rivals will be at home. If it is between us, Aberdeen and Hearts as looks likely, we will have to go to both their places. It'll be a tough run in

So evidently, it’s extremely unlikely but not mathematically impossible as of yet.If your worst case scenario results happen in Matchdays 31 and 32 and we lose to Dundee , we`d finish 7th even if Aberdeen lost to Rangers , Dundee United drew with St J and Motherwell drew with Hearts in Matchday 33 . Would mean Aberdeen and Hearts had 46 , DU and Well 45 and us 44 . Hopefully we beat St J and last 2 pre split matches are about getting points towards 3rd and not about fighting for top 6 . Getting in top 6 has gone to last game for us the last 3 seasons and we only made it in 2023 and that was cause of another result . Like in 2023 , looks like there won`t be much between 7th and 3rd so all teams should be very motivated . Talk of getting 3rd always seems to be about money from group stage European matches but would also mean more cash for league position than in recent years .

I remember when he first came in, SDG said target for us was to reach Top 6. I thought he was utterly delusional considering how bad we were, but turns out the man is a genius and turning into a hell of a manager already. I’m backing him to take us to 3rd - we have been the most consistent team behind Celtic since Christmas, with no drop-off in performance levels.
Top 6 is a great achievement when you think of the mess we were in, but let’s keep looking forward - Euro group stages (likely) is way too good a chance for us to miss out on (again).
