View Full Version : 18th anniversary of League Cup win v Killie

As the thread title says it was 18 years ago today we beat Killie 5-1.
Can't believe it was that long ago but remember the joy of relaxing and enjoying the last 15 minutes or so knowing we were winning the cup.
Memories of big Rob Jones scoring, our Moroccan stars, a young Lewis Stevenson's performance and the weather giving us all the seasons in one day.

The first trophy I saw us win and what a way to do it. A fantastic free flowing team and was so good to see a Hibs team live up to their potential at Hampden. Really difficult to believe it was 18 years ago now. Still remember it vividly

Wow, 18 years! That’s depressing! First of only 2 trophies I’ve seen us win. What a day it was.

Incredible day, got the bus through and the snow started as we got in to Glasgow.
There was a fantastic video on Youtube of the first goal being filmed from some flats opposite Hampden. The roar was something else. Can't find it now.
Sunshine On Leith was something else that day, probably the biggest crowd singing that theres ever been.

Remember approaching the game with trepidation as Killie had been flying with a decent team with a sprinkling of jambo in their squad but I needn’t have worried as looking back we had a decent team ourselves that day
The game was played in every season possible with vintage unforgettable performances from Steven Fletcher and Benji
Standout memories Rob Jones celebrating his goal through the snow a magnificent SOL John Collins rightly celebrating his first trophy as a Manager and dedicating it to his late Dad and Michael Stewart’s torn face at the end Unused Sub don’t think he has ever forgiven us 😀

Probably an unpopular opinion but I truly think Sunshine on Leith was better that day than it was in 2016.
In many ways my favourite cup win of the 3 in my lifetime. The first one that I was old enough to truly appreciate. I was there with my Grandad (he wasn't able in 2016) and my mum who had both taken me to games since before I could walk or talk. I knew how much it meant to them and can only imagine the pride I'll feel when I (hopefully) get to experience the same with my own kids.
Our buses through were massively delayed and we were worried about missing kick off. I don't think we left Edinburgh until about 1.30. Everyone was well oiled and we staggered into the ground about 30 seconds before kick off. Some night back in the pub afterwards as well.

A few clear memories for me from that day
Taking my Mum to the game - a very rare occasion.
Being completely sober for a final - a very rare occasion
Being freezing for most of the game - not so rare an occasion
Buying a hot chocolate in Hampden as i was sold cold - definitely a one off occasion
Thinking the water in Hampden must be the most awful ever as the hot chocolate was disgusting - but it was hot so i drunk it
Not feeling the cold at the end
Sunshine on Leith being awesome
Great day!

I'm sure it was Mother's day that day too. Missed the first 5 minutes of it but remember getting in and we didn't start well. Players looked nervous. Was thinking here we go again (Livi final). Got the first goal and never looked back

:agree:
It wasn't the holy grail, of course, but it was a big win after a long time without silverware, and a crazy, crazy game. Could barely see the first goal due to the snow, when Killie got one back concern started to spread that they would somehow peg us back, then we finished with champagne football in the sunshine. Magical stuff.
Loved the spontaneous party back in Leith too, I *may* have been amongst the fans who forced our way into the South Stand to see the team bring the cup back to Easter Road.

:agree: I was one of them. It was carnage.
One of the highlights of the day was the guy we christened "Fat Bob" who lamped one of the pitch invaders as they were cleared off the park. He went hammering down the steps and absolutely nailed one of them as the hopped back over the barrier.

Second trophy I had seen us win at that point, following the Skol Cup in 1991.
Some personal regrets from that day. Our bus was through early, and we were booked into a club (possibly Shettleston Juniors). Great build up to the game and a really good scoop - but the downside was missing both the first and third goals from going to the toilet :boo hoo:
Third goal was a thing of beauty. Gutted.

An amazing day. Benji had been in some run of form before that game, he was simply unstoppable on the day. Lewis Stevenson's man of the match performance was so impressive, I don't think anyone would have imagined how many games he would go on to play for us.
Rob Jones in the snow after the opening goal is the image of the day for me, forever ingrained in my memory.

I spoke with Dougie McDonald (the match referee) the following day and asked him how he managed to start the second half with Hibs not having 11 players on the pitch. The assistants were sent to the changing rooms to make sure they were empty and so everyone was out on the pitch. They reported back that the changing rooms were empty and in reality a few of the Hibs players were in the toilets. The referee didn't count the players but restarted the game only to be told by the fourth official that Hibs players were coming down the tunnel. He named the players and confirmed that they hadn't been substituted and so should be on. He then counted the players and told the referee that Hibs were players short. The fourth official was told to get them on the pitch as soon as possible and not to wait until the ball was out of play.

Was there ever a DVD released or planned for this cup win, or did the imminent chaos within the club stop this from happening? I realise that I've only ever really watched whatever highlights that are on YouTube, whereas I've seen 'The Team that Wouldn't Die' and 'Time for Heroes' more times than I can count.

I remember watching it on a sticky internet connection at my house in darkest rural China 3 hours outside of Shanghai. Sunshine on Leith at the end was the best rendition ever in my opinion.
The third of 4 Hibs trophies in my lifetime which is an interesting comparison to the 3 “won” by our maroon rivals from the west. I say “won” but all 3 should be asterisked as they were paid for with stolen Lithuanian pension money (the debt from 1998 not actually being cleared off until Vlad turned up).
So it’s 4-0 in my book.

9 years TODAY since we lost the league cup final to county
What a run to the final that was eh?
I'm still firmly of the belief that losing that game, coupled with rangers tiring and losing to Falkirk all culminated in us finding the inner strength to go on and lift the Scottish
Time for heroes indeed

I was sitting at home nursing a single bottle of Miller as the goals went in.
My newborn lad was 5 days old. And with the sogra (mother in law) over here from overseas it was made plain to me that my presence away from home would not be worth contemplating so I resigned myself to not going.
One word to describe the scene at home as I watched - surreal.
