Anyone planning on going regardless of Scotland qualifying. We've got friends based in Austin and Houston so might try and combine a visit to them with some games in the state and maybe beyond.

Yeah, my wife has family in upper NY state and they’ve just offered to host us so we are thinking of using that as a base and travel to the stadiums around there. I think there’s 4 stadiums within a reasonable drive to them so really tempted.
Prices for flights may scupper those plans but definitely something we’re considering.

I know someone who is doing similar (though not staying with family). Getting base in that general area but far enough so that hotels aren't bumped up too much (they will but not to the extent as they will be in the actual host cities). Guy is English and is going which his English mates and they are just gambling that England get a game or two round that area. Think they are willing to fly to Canada/Mexico for a game too.

The other halfs dad currently lives in Atlanta for work, but he's got a place just outside Tampa in Florida too. If he's retired in the next year he'll be moving back there.
If he's still living in Atlanta I'll definitely try to get to a game there, otherwise I'll try for Miami.

Trump will have put a Tariff on Scottish people by that time, so you’ll have to pay 25% of your body weight in gold to get in.

When you say here I presume that means you stay in the US but life being the same as last year is absolutely not what I’ve been told by people I know that live there.
I wouldn’t go to quite a few countries for various political reasons. UAE, Qatar, Saudi, Russia etc.
I know various people who are point blank refusing to return to the states whilst Trump is in charge. He’s been voted in by the majority of the voting population, it’s not just the leader of the country, it’s a damning indictment of a huge amount of the people you’ll come across. I have zero interest in being anywhere near people who back him and think his views are acceptable.
This World Cup is worthy of the same sort of boycott chat that the previous World Cup was deservingly marred by.

I stopped getting excited about politicians a long time ago, regardless of who's in charge nothing much changes in terms of our daily lives and hasn't here either as far as I can see. Not sure who or what the people you know are talking of (I'd be curious to hear some examples) but life has continued as normal since the election.

I was planning to go and stay with a mate who lives in California and/or with some friends in Canada, but now having a young daughter has probably put the brakes on that. I'm sure the US will do it very well, but Trump will ensure his face is front and centre at every opportunity.
Euro 2028 being in the UK/Ireland is not very exciting, but probably better for me to try and attend, and I will definitely be up for World Cup 2030 - the early South American leg aside!

And nowhere near the majority in cities where the matches will be held.
I also would think twice about visiting when he’s in charge but I wouldn’t be worried about the of people I’d come across.
New York felt pretty similar to London, where I live, this time last year and I wouldn’t have expected that to change much.
With regards to the World Cup I’m not sure - I’ve not followed Scotland much.
When I go abroad I prefer to do it as an individual although I’ve enjoyed European trips with Hibs.
New York is expensive already so I imagine it could be crazy expensive when World Cup is on.

Even if comfortable with the thought of going to the USA at the moment, paying for it just now is a gamble. There's a load of variables in play that might mean the tournament doesn't take place in its planned format, possibly even at all. I hope I'm wrong, for reasons far more important than football.

Only around 60% of eligible voters turn out for Wesminster and Holyrood elections. That's less than for the US elections.
There are plenty of sticks with which to beat Trump but nit picking about the decisiveness of his win isn't one. He smashed it.

To be fair, the main difference is that Trump is actually a popular figure in his country - winning the election with a huge number of votes.
Whereas we have Starmer ‘winning’ an election on approx 9m votes, and his popularity has only been heading down since then 😂
Given the state of UK politics, I’m no sure how anyone can be so anti Trump as to refuse to visit the US 😂 (BBC propaganda has a lot to answer for!)

See my reply on the other thread about last night's game. There's only 4 teams get a play off spot for the World Cup via the Nations League and we won't be one of them.
12 group winners from the traditional qualifying groups qualify direct. The 12 runners up and 4 Nations League group winners that haven't finished in the top two of their qualifying groups then go into two rounds of play-offs with seeding playing a massive part - ties are single legs and for the first round it is the seeded team that is at home. The four winners from those two rounds join the 12 group winners at the World Cup.
Edit: there is a very slim chance that we could qualify via the Nations League if we don't finish top two in our group. It would require every Nations League group winner plus Italy, Netherlands, Denmark and Croatia to finish in the top two of their group. Given the group winners include San Marino, Moldova, N Ireland and North Macedonia, that's never happening.
Edit to the edit: that slim chance becomes even harder (maybe impossible) if Germany beat Italy in their tie this international break as three of the teams further up the pecking order would be in the one group.

Definitely going, hopefully to follow Scotland, if not going anyway to experience the whole thing! Should be great, Yanks will put on a show!

Assuming we stay in Group A, anyone know when the draw for the groups are, and could we get England? That would at least spice up this otherwise dull nations league stuff:agree:

No, its the Nations League just finished (2024/25) that counts for the World Cup. The next Nations League (2026/27) will be for the 2028 Euros.
........and this encapsulates the confusing madness of the current system. We are playing for groups for the next nations league for the Euros, while on the same day Wales are playing World Cup qualifiers.
I have no idea whats going on in International Football weeks these days

It's complicated but one good thing is they have least got rid of most of the friendlies apart from warm up matches just before the summer tournaments of even numbered years.
These nations league matches can count towards play offs (even if I don't understand it at the time haha)

I don't understand the Nations League properly either so just go with the approach that Scotland winning every game is the ideal.

The Nations League and Platini’s week of football have massively reduced my interest in international football.
When I realise it is on, I still invariably get drawn in.
But I don’t understand the convoluted qualification process and have little desire to try to work it out. Discussion re who is in the squad leaves me a bit cold, I just don’t watch enough football (Hibs aside) any more to form an opinion.
Then as soon as it’s on… it’s like I never left it, even if it sometimes hard to relate what I’m watching to any sort of bigger picture.

Wales are in a Group that doesn’t have any quarter finalists of the Nations League in it. They are in a Group of 5 so need to play games during the Nations League slots.

Wouldn’t worry too much about the next World Cup. We won’t be there I’m afraid.

Almost impossible in that group with no decent keeper or striker and a manager who's past his sell by date.

Didn't think Gordon had much of a chance with the goals but he is getting old and will probably retire from international. Will have to be Gunn with Zander Clarke on the bench - or some other young keeper coming through.

How come the likes of Wales world cup campaign is already under way and play again tonight whilst Scotland and many other teams campaign start in September
Apologies if it's obvious i don't really follow international football but i would have thought every single group would kick off on the same month

Wouldn’t go anywhere near USA with that utter ****bag in charge.
You have to differentiate between the bat**** stuff and the USA being the most incredible country to visit.
To answer OP question.
Yes we are pencilling in our summer holidays for late June 2026. The group games are normally from mid June so will need to time it for worse case 20th onwards.
Scotland I think are unlikely to make it given where we are and there is no real back door entry. But we will still go, pick where we want to holiday, book and IF Scotland make it be prepared to jump on a shortish flight hopefully to get to see them. East coast - NYC / Miami may be our preference.
Stadiums bigger than euros on average and demand for tartan army tickets likely to be materially less than Germany last year so probably decent chance of tickets.

Never fancied travelling for a World cup/Euro but it's a great day in the pub or at home on tv. Glad it's always on freeview

It’s nowhere near the most incredible country to visit imo so I don’t have to take that into account :greengrin

Not even in the top 10.
It’s sounds like a petty dealbreaker but the tipping situation puts me off returning more than the politics. Just always felt slightly on edge, not having a clue who thinks they deserve a tip and who doesn’t, and how much (not the mention the outright hated you receive if you get it wrong).
At least in the UK restaurants only at roughly 10% is nice and simple.

Based on my experiences working and travelling/backpacking the length of the country via Amtrak I found it a genuinely amazing place to visit.

Genuinely have never seen hatred from any server over the years. 18% is the norm, anything above that is a bonus for excellent work, but I have in the past gone low when service has been poor. Any time I did, I left a message on the bill so they knew why, they may have been unhappy but at least there was an explanation. That said, I haven't had to do that that in a long time though we kind of got out of the habit of eating out after Covid. Didn't seem to us it was worth it as much as it used to be. Don't get hung up on that though, there's a lot to experience here that's really very good :greengrin

Like anywhere I suppose - depends on where you go and what you do.
I've only ever felt on edge once in the States having been a number of times to New York and Orlando and that was going to a cinema of all things! I've been in the bible belt in Texas kayaking and met the nicest people I've met anywhere ever.
