View Full Version : Ball watching instead of man watching
I've really enjoyed these last four or five months. Hardly missed a game and generally been in the company of at least one son and brother who attends every single game.
Braw day oot today in the sunshine courtesy of the lovely folk of the 2016 bus and staff at Hurlford Bowling Club.
When we do lose a goal it's almost always because the defence lose a man. Since the Jack Ross days you could freeze frame every opposition goal and see most of our defenders staring intently at the ba' whilst failing to notice the opposition players free in the box.
We aren't half bad in defence these days. I just wish that DG, LC and EM could teach them to watch their man instead of being hypnotised by the ball.
If they had done so in the 92nd minute, we would be coming back with the three points.

Almost every goal in every game at every level contains defensive errors.
Obviously in the ideal world every goal would be down to brilliant play by the attacking team but it simply isn't the case.
You only have to see our goal yesterday for a far worse example.

Wasn’t it Arsene Wenger who claimed that every goal scored was the result of a mistake?

Aye I think it was and you know exactly what he means.

Probably not far wrong.
Rocky and Josh were either side of Murray seconds before he scores but both wander off in different directions and leave him free.
However, prior to that one slip I thought defensively we were excellent all game again and never looked in any danger of conceding which is a massive turnaround from early season when my nerves were shredded every time the opposition were near our box

If you watch the highlights it’s Cadden & Miller not marking any of the 3 spare Killie players in the box

If we'd made more of our dominance and scored more than one goal, the late mistake would have been irrelevant.

Exactly. That's where the problem lies. Our defence have been excellent.

If it was him he probably meant every goal Arsenal concede is a referees mistake.

Early days but that mid air swipe was bizarre needs to show more composure and get in front of his man more in an attacking sense don’t get me wrong I like him likes to mix it but we need goals

Yep maybe they are guilty but still Rocky and Josh waltzed away from Murray for no obvious reason

Nearly every goal for the opposition is a mistake by us. Yes, we know that.
But I cannot be the only Hibs supporter watching our defenders being hypnotized by the ball, rather than tracking their man. Campbell and C Cadden are just watching the ball swung over their heads and then headed back over into the centre. Rocky is left on his own trying to mark 3 Killie players around the 6 yard box. We were short of numbers in the 92nd minute defending a one-goal lead. No wonder DG was p*ss*d off.
At any level of football, defenders are taught to be aware of where the opposition strikers are in the box. For me, I think too many of our goals against are caused by defenders spectating on the game at crucial moments.
We pay good money to spectate. We don't expect to pay to watch the players spectate.

All reasonable points until the last sentence. Seems a bit churlish to make such an issue of a rare moment of slackness in our defence who have been nothing short of magnificent recently.

I'm making an observation Flash, nothing more.
Ball-watching is an avoidable bad practice that should have been drilled out of our players by now.
Also wondered why with Warren and Marv on the bench why DG didn't bring another centre half on to shore up the 6 yard box.
I've been at almost every game during the magnificent run. Enjoyed them all. GGTTH
