Barring the penalty where Cadden was brought down I think that may be the best refereeing performance I have seen from Beaton and also one of the best performances from any ref in a Derby match. I have long complained that the Glasgow Derby was refereed differently and today I think Beaton allowed aggression, was even handed and tried to keep the game going at a good pace. I'm quick enough to criticise refs so should also praise them when they do well. Booking Shankland was my highlight and basically stop him being any further factor in the game

I think he got most things right. Shanklands booking was bizarre, like hes stopped caring.

If you are right then that means I can hardly think of anything he got wrong of any consequence. He also played a couple of advantages, one for each team, and pulled it back for the free kicks. I wish that happened far more often

I find that a crazy take. Have you seen it on the tele or is that from your view at the ground?

It’s an absolute stonewaller.

Apart from that, I agree, Beaton had a good game. It a low bar but he’s the best ref in the country without a doubt imo.

I sit in the east and in line with where cadden went down and it looked a stone wall penalty in real time

Wasn’t a penalty, he did well. Few yellows but it wasn’t a dirty game.

:agree: It wasn't even a heat of the moment booking. He took the ball away and had 5-10 seconds before deciding to do it. Brought the crowd to life for us too. Weird but good luck to him.

Not so sure . That happens to a hun or Celtic player at Ibrox or Parkhead and I think there’s a good chance it gets given.

I thought it was a stonewaller penalty, especially after seeing the replay. Clipped his foot as he got across the defender.

I think of the soft pen we conceded away at St Johnstone where we were supposed to just accept it was clumsy defending and move on.

The defender is wrong side, clips him, falls onto him and he goes over. As DG said after the game if it's given on the field no chance it gets overturned.

Replays clearly show his ankle being clipped. You'd have to assume VAR was focusing on upper body contact and missed the clip.

definite penalty, his view wasn’t great but isn’t that why we have VAR 🙄

Penalty every day of the week, had his heal clipped and was then pushed in to the bargain, only Beaton will know why he never gave that as he had the perfect view of it, and if VAR never reviewed that then something not right, FFS Boyle got booked a few minutes later for the doing the exact same thing to a yam player.

Didn't think it was a penalty on initial viewing as I was looking for a push, never spotted the kick on his heel. Should be a penalty.

That'll even out all the moaning from the last two games decisions that went our way and we can all call it quits :greengrin

Defo stone wall penalty not the push( which wasn’t enough) kicked caddens left foot as he burst bye that made him trip , if you see it at a certain angle it’s clear as day,, surprised Var missed seed it

It was a penalty, but not necessarily one you see in real time and at full speed, although a defender is always playing with fire getting caught the wrong side like that.

Don't have any stand out "oh FFS ref" moments and unlike that absolute Mike Hunt against St Mirren, he actually gave a foul or 2 against Bowie.

I think it technically was a penalty, but, because Cadden put on a show of falling, it gave Beaton grounds for his decision not to award it.

Re the penalty - I didn’t think it was a penalty.

Plenty of contact but I thought Cadden was cleverly getting his body across to defender to initiate contact - which there was - but it didn’t constitute a foul.

I’ve not seen “the heel clip” that some folk say changes things tbf.

It was another episode similar to last week where a lot of fans weren't sure who was actually getting a penalty looked at. Nobody round me had a clue and 4g phone signal was weak so couldn't get online for any help.

Agree with the sentiment though that he had a good game and let it flow the best he could.

I'd add the one in the first half where the Hearts RB flopped to the ground and grabbed the ball which was given as a foul to them because Bowie exhaled at the wrong moment.

Beaton knows it’s a penalty and so do VAR, if folk don’t think it’s a penalty then there is nothing I can say to change there mind, it was 100% a penalty, NH says Cadden caused it, why did Beaton not book him for diving, yes we won the game but we shouldn’t let this one slide and use the Boyle incident as a comparison.

.

He's allowed to do that. Clear ground in front of him to go forward.

It's up to the defender not to impede him after that.

Clipped his heels. Pen.

The heels bit is the bit I need to see back as I didn’t really look at that on the replays I saw.

I agree that he’s entitled to get his body across and invite contact - it’s good play to do so.

Contact doesn’t mean it’s a penalty though and whilst there was plenty of contact between all the arms and upper body, I didn’t think there was enough to make it a foul anywhere on the pitch, or that he was “impeded”.

If there’s a foul in the contact on the heel - then I stand corrected.

Thought it was a stonewaller first few watches with the heel clip. Sportscene analysis picked up on the Cadden shirt pull though, so can see why it wasn't given......

Actually worked out well - who knows if we get the pen and miss it, Hearts could go on to win the game.
