View Full Version : St Mirren away build up thread

Over 8 days till our next game.
Undefeated in last 11 games…1 loss in 13 for the mighty Hibees.
This team continues to improve and we face another big test away to St Mirren.
The first game of the season away to them was painfully bad 2nd half especially.
A win against St Mirren would really help as we push for 3rd especially with other fixtures that weekend.
We are also the last team to play next Sunday so be interesting to see how other results turn out before we play.
St Mirren haven’t won at home in the league since Boxing Day. They seem to have better away form than home form.
I would expect this to sell out very soon - looks like only about 150 tickets left behind the goal.

One end section still to be released so still plenty tickets left. Now Ayr is out the way, I think we’ll sell them.
Every game is a big game just now. This is the type of game we need to win if we want to get third though. Dundee Utd away to Celtic next week so should be a real chance to close the gap.

Another big game coming up next week and a team who has beat us twice already, hopefully a changed result than the last two.
Would expect the same team as last week with Gayle coming back for Myko.
Celtic stick on to win.
Dundee Aberdeen could go either way probably a draw.
Motherwell will be looking for 3 points at home to Ross County and will probably be favourites.
Rangers in good form and away to hearts so could do with an away win.
Vital we get the 3 points in this one.

Working ok for me
Not many good seats left in the blocks already opened, I’d wait a day or two until they open more blocks

We usually go to the Bull Inn in New Street - great pub - has a few small rooms - sells real ale - a bit of a walk to the ground - got mix of fans - St Mirren and Hibs

Looking at the fixtures I really feel we need to win this game if we have hopes of pushing for third. There are only 13 to play and 2 are against Celtic, 2 are against Rangers (I know) and 2 are likely to be derbies. Only leaves 7 games against the rest so if we want to push further up the table we’re going to need to go to places like St Mirren and win.

Think we’ll pick up an enough points that we’ll be fine for that by the time we get to the split. If we want better than just being in the top six we need to be picking up wins in this type of game.

Yeah a result and performance not many expected from them anyway Robinson likes a win against Hibs, first half hour of the first game of the season we played ok before we fell apart, game at Easter Road was a game of two halves but still failed to get the 3 points.
Would expect the same team again with Gayle for Myko.

I hate referring to game as must win, but this definitely is must win if we want third, which we obviously do! Even just thinking about European places, a win this weekend is vital as the run of games coming up things get more difficult (not that St Mirren is an easy win).
Feeling positive but pensive.
Should have added that the good news about the fixtures following this is though we're playing Celtic, the other fixtures have those around us all facing each other too so hopefully not dramatic changes in league position in the off chance Celtic leave Easter Road with 3 points.

Still got a battle on to make top six - 3 points in front of Hearts who are going well themselves, carry all the luck in the world and have a far easier run in than we do.
Think Motherwell have an easier run in on paper too and they are 2 behind however have been very poor recently.
Think we will make the top 6 with the momentum we have though will need to win in Paisley and the Derby at Easter Road to be ahead of Hearts by the split

You are right, I think just had a quick look at fixtures and forgot one of our aways v Celtic is the cup and one of their homes v Dundee was cup.
They don't have a far easier run in. Still easier though on paper IMO, not that games are overly predictable. Really need to win the home derby

Im still not convinced on top 6 yet! It's all very tight and as much as we have been picking up plenty points, many of those games could have went the other way. Its a coin flip for me for top 6 then same again top 3.

There is a very thin line between this season being a good one or a poor one. We’ve seen it before when you’re talking about having to win something like 3 games from 6. Then it becomes 3 from 4. Then you’re relying on others dropping points and, before you know it, it’s the last game before the split and you’re needing a win which you don’t get.
We’ve been unfortunate with the cup draws but anything other than top six this year would be a big failure, the league is poor. 9 games to go before the split and I reckon about 3 wins will have us in the top half but we’ll need a bit more than that if we want to go for third.

It’s along way to Sunday but extra time and a defeat on penalties won’t have done St Mirren any favours physically or mentally, whilst we get an extra three days rest and coming on a positive result.
3 points is so important as we then go in to a very tough game vs Celtic followed by two 6 pointers against Dundee United and Hearts. Not taking 3 points from saints followed by a defeat to Celtic could really take the wind out our sails whereas the win allows us some leeway for a potential defeat to Celtic.

St Mirren looked dead on their feet last night. Not just when it got to extra time but well before that and they let Hearts back in to the game.
Think we need to try and get our foot on the ball and play a bit more (if the pitch allows) than we have in the last couple of games. Watching them last night the ball was in the air 90% of the time. Too much of that and the game becomes a lottery. Midfield need to get on the ball.

The pitch was in a poor state before the game and a lot worse after it and more rain forecast this week
A few Mirren fans have said to me they tend to play well in the first hslf snd then form dips the second hslf
So if we can keep it right first half and they dip second and also get tired as game goes on given cup exertions we hopefully can get tge win
Thier ploy of going long early with two strong pacey forwards will test rocky in particular

It might suit Rocky as he’s strong, agile too though . One that I’d have more concerns about is Levitt considering the state of the pitch and with the the type of team they are it could end up one of them games that there’s not a lot of football getting played but it ends up more a physical battle which I don’t think would suit him at all .

Having watched recent games away at St Johnstone, Ayr and Ross County, there is nothing in them to suggest this will be anything other than another closely fought game. We seem to have developed a great habit of coming out the right side of these though or atleast scrapping to keep this run going on several occasions.

On a negative note … it’s great we are coming out the right side of these games , earlier in the season we weren’t but we've all seen how things can change on this like the way hertz were under Naismith when they were scrapping results or Aberdeen under Thelin at the start of the season too . They'd actually been going relatively well prior to the QP humiliation. Four or five straight wins in the league plus into the knockout stages in Europe. You have to hope they've got it in them to bounce back at Tynecastle. By no means a given though, as you say.

Hopefully we really go for it from kick off. They will still have the Cup Game in their head and legs and we have had a good rest after a positive result. They started really well against Hearts and could easily have been out of sight in the first half but tired really badly. We have to try and stop them starting well. Spoke to Joe Newell today at the kids training camp and he will be a few weeks by the sounds of it as just back on the grass not full training. Hopefully we can get back to full strength soon and it will be great to have options in midfield

Only 8 league fixtures left until the split.
Reckon we will beat St J and Dundee at home and our games against Rantic will take care of themselves.
However, it's what we do away to St Mirren, Dundee Utd and Kilmarnock and at home to Hearts which will define our pre split season. All 4 could easily end in draws and that wouldn't be great.
First of those 4 games is up on Sunday.
They looked absolutely buckled at the end of the game on Monday night and big Mandron is probably still sleeping.
Also think they will have sustained a couple of injuries from the game.
The big leveller could be the pitch which was looking awfy poor and sodden by the end and a fair bit more water will have fallen on it before Sunday afternoon.
Their tactic of choice in a successful first half on Monday was hitting it over the top for speedster Olusanya to run onto.
Fortunately for Hearts he messed up 4 good chances in quick succession but he is without doubt a danger. Their other favourite since Robinson came in is dangerous corners flighted in to be met a yard out be that on the front post, on top of the keeper or at the back post.
Hibs defend well now and the question for me is can we score goals given this game comes a bit early for our returning forward players and midfielders including the new guy.
Avoid needless yellow and red cards as well as daft penalties and hopefully we can get the win we need.

Feels like a huge game for a number of reasons, one being that St Mirren have handed us our most miserable defeats this season. I was almost certain David Gray was doomed after the last meeting. I'm sure Gray will remind the players of those humblings. Hopefully we can demonstrate the progress we've made over the past 2 months.

Be a tough game on a dodgy pitch against a team we have struggled against recently.
Hopefully this new version of Hibs will meet the challenge and sneak a win here as that would be absolutely massive.
Feels like a stuffy one goal in it type of game.

The expectation was certainly they'd all be back in January barring Ekpiteta who was furthest out and would be mid- February. Good to have Bowie back on the pitch and hopefully big Marv is on track - Newell and Youan obviously out for longer than expected (Youan hopefully hasn't chucked the toys)

I pray that is the case as I agree, if he's hungry and ready to show the clubs why they should bid our asking price this summer we'll have a player on our hands to help us achieve something this season.
My biggest fear is this is just dragging out entirely and I can picture Dave Gray making a point to not pander to him if he's not pulled his weight in either training, matches, or general attitude. Which I'm not totally against either by the way.

The way Gray spoke about him missing out on his move before in it didn’t take him long to get his head straight and all he wants to do is play football which is when he’s at his happiest I’m not sure going by that he will down tools …
I think breaking back into the team will be Youan’s biggest challenge at the moment but getting him back will only make us stronger and add competition .

With Celtic beating Dundee United a certainty and Rangers playing Hearts I can't help but feel this is a proper must-win.
We will know where we stand come kick off time but whatever happens with the other matches I think we desperately need 3 points to kick on for Europe. Considering the fixtures after this game are pretty honking as well.
Celtic at home
United away 6 point extravaganza
Hearts at home 6 point DERBY extravaganza
Celtic away - cup
Killie away
2 wins from that lot plus a win on Sunday I think we will be in with a real shout. Especially if those 2 wins are against Hearts and United.

I would take a lot of these interviews with a pinch of salt, he's not going to come out saying anything bad about the guy. We'll obviously just have to see what happens between now and the summer but as someone who has been a very staunch defender of him I admit I even found myself getting exasperated with this whole saga and the timing of this injury.

My worry is that it's one thing for missing the move in the summer and having the message knuckle down and you'll get the move January, it's another thing to miss the second time. He'll have wanted to go, there were bids in so can imagine he's frustrated. Nobody knows how he'll react this time, just have to wait and see

I suppose to a degree that’s truth but I don’t think Gray is the type of manager that will accept any nonsense from his players , sometimes I think there’s more made of things about Youan than there should be like the keepie ups which Gray said he had no problems with even though others in the media heavily criticised him for it .
Best thing Youan can do now is to get himself back into the team and playing well , downing tools doesn’t benefit anyone , especially the player IMO.

Yeah I suppose that’s true in no one knows how he will react but is there anything to be gained by the player downing tools as opposed to playing well , scoring goals , getting assists and putting himself further in the limelight that might lead to a better move , more money etc?

There seems to be a bit of money in Irish football. A good few decent players have moved there from Scottish clubs recently, Dom Thomas from Queens Park, JDH etc. Interesting to see how JDH gets on after it looks like Hibs have wanted him of the wage bill for a long time and appear to freeze him out for a long time in efforts to force his hand.
P.S. I see Jamie Gullan has moved back to Raith Rovers from Dundalk and will soon be 26!

I think most of us thought he would have been away in the summer but it's not east to get a move when you haven't played for so long due to injury.
It wouldn't surprise me if JDH did well at Sligo and moved on to a better team in Ireland or comes back to mainland Britain. He simply has to play lots of games to move on from being known as a permacrock.

His biggest issue was always his contract. We've been trying to shift the guy for 2 years near enough. He's turned down moves before to Forest Green and I believe a Serie B team about 2 years ago and the longer he's went without making any impact his ability to be shifted without us taking a financial hit just lessened and lessened to the point where everyone just cut losses and gave him something to go away now.
I don't blame the guy entirely for sitting on his contract but he should have left 2 years ago when he had the chance. Now he's entering his prime years with about 100 minutes of football in nearly 3 years. Good luck to him but I reckon the guy has lost the hunger for it in all honesty. At least Amos was out in January touting himself for a move knowing full well his time here was pointless.

Big fixture, on the basis we have Celtic next week. 3 points would be essential I think to keep on the heels of United who play Celtic today.
Good opportunity to close the gap and put a marker down that we are the real deal.
I think United have been massively fortunate with some decisions, last minute goals, seen them twice wasn’t impressed either time in all seriousness.

Said it previously but I honestly think tomorrow will have a huge impact on what happens between now and the end of the season. When you look at the fixtures it’s one of the better opportunities for 3 points IMO.
Win and you’ll start to open up gaps on teams below you, including St Mirren. You’ll also more than likely cut the gap to Dundee Utd to a point.
Lose, with Celtic to follow, you could find yourself anywhere in the league with how tight it is and in a fight to just reach the top six.
Agree, we need to be looking at tomorrow as a big opportunity. We owe St Mirren one as well with the performances against them this season.
Let's hope the pitch holds up, it was a mess during the hearts game, not made for on the deck passing football, more of the industrial hoof ball varietie.

Need to be wary of their tactics early doors, long balls in between centre back and full backs for their big physical strikers to go after. They deliver some fantastic corners too

St M have lost 5 of their last 6. No reason for them to trouble us when they’ve barely laid a glove on anyone for months.

I know a few st Mirren fans who are season ticket holders and they all say they play better in first hslf and tend to fade in the second hslf
So key to winning this will be keeping it tight early doors and targeting Taylor at the back for them as he is a weak link
The two big strikers are pacey and physical so agsin we need to have a plan to cope with them as Hearts didn’t in the first hslf of the cup game

Form matters though which is why we were favourites against Aberdeen in a game we proceeded to win with relative ease a few weeks back despite being behind them.
The same reason we are favourites again today despite being away from home and only 3 points ahead of them.
Won 8 out of 25 is one way of looking at it but it’s more relevant to say we’ve won 7 from the last 11.

The draws away to Ross County (crap pitch - 2nd goal and game is over) and St J were extremely annoying but hopefully we can do the job today as I also believe it’s going to be so tight to get into top 6 - but I’m hopeful we are thinking top 3 as a target but we need to win this to keep close to Aberdeen and playing Celtic then Dundee Utd and then Hearts it’s another crucial few games for the outcome of this season.

Whether it’s 8 from 25, 7 from 11 or whatever I think the point is that we rarely win games with ease as was been suggested we should. Even in the good run, Motherwell away is probably the only one that ticks that box. Aberdeen at home was pretty comfortable.
It’s the form over the 25 games that makes a win today so important though. It’s one of the best opportunities we have for 3 points and if we fail to win, I really don’t see us pushing for 3rd thereafter. On the flip side, win today, you’re two points of Aberdeen and momentum is still with you. Have to win.

Their forwards are a handful . Against hertz they missed chances that should have seen them 2 or 3 up and yet in their win against Aberdeen they were clinical in only having 3 shots which resulted in 3 goals . Olusanya looked a real threat with his pace in that game …
Totally agree about keeping it tight early doors . Hopefully they’ll tire again in the 2nd half especially after playing extra time which will benefit the likes of Boyle and the Cadden’s .

Not seeing this as being a tough game.
St M have lost 5 of their last 6. No reason for them to trouble us when they’ve barely laid a glove on anyone for months.
Let’s have a real go at them from the off and knock in a few goals.
Got to get the three points to keep the pressure on Aberdeen and Dundee Utd.
Anyone that has watched our away games since the turn of the year can't be expecting anything less than a tough game today. St Mirren have also had our number in recent games and our current run of form can be traced right back to starting after they completely dominated us at ER.
A win would be a fantastic result today.

Not anything we didn’t know but don’t think Newell will make the squad today. Saw him in a cafe at the prom in Portobello earlier.

Where’s all the Hibs fans? I’m sitting in the Bull Inn with not another Hibby in sight!

We’ve had so many ‘must win’ games for various reasons already but you really feel this game is absolutely pivotal in terms of where we can end up.
Lose and we’ll be worried about top 6 and miles off 3rd. I don’t think a draw is much better if we want to keep climbing. Games like this need to be won.
5 pts isn’t miles off third.
