Is it just my impression or has the January transfer window got quieter in recent years and particularly this one (I know currently there is almost a week to go)

There does not seem to have been much movement anywhere and even less full on mid contract business. just a bunch of ones where player able to talk to other clubs / contract ends in summer and current club opting for something now rather than nothing in summer?

Have clubs worked out that the value in this window is often so poor with demand outstripping decent supply? that blowing a big bit of budget not worth it when often its out of favour / back from long term injury / fringe players who are not fully match fit and so the impact that clubs ( and even more so fans want) is less likely than having full pre season with new club & team mates?

Then there is the inevitable last couple of days when clubs try and shuffle their fringe players hoping to get lucky 'Top Trumps' style leaving fans blowing a gasket asking why we have not done decent business.

Have you ever tried to buy a decent pineapple at this time of year? next to impossible and extortionate even if you can find one :greengrin

I think January has become an incredibly poor month to do any real serious business for the long term for a various amount of reasons. The top end clubs are probably scared to go overboard with FFP in a window that usually sees the price of players inflated through desperation but also could potentially lack match sharpness and may need time to get up to speed with their 'style of play'. Gone are the days of Chelsea buying Torres from Liverpool for what would probably nowadays be a record breaking fee within January. If they do sign players it's usually trying to pinch folk you've never heard of on speculation of them being a diamond in the rough.

This window City look to be the real outlier but we can all maybe put that down to potentially getting hammered with sanctions in the next 12 months and are maybe getting ahead of it by signing guys now. Whereas Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United are all yet to sign anyone, and yet their fans will tell you they all have a serious need in at least one position to try and help achieve their goal for the season. They all might still sign someone but at the moment it's a realistic possibility that all four might walk away with no one or even a short term loan signing that gets no one excited (Wout Weghorst to Man United for example).

I think when these clubs don't make moves it can really filter down the pyramid as well where the likes of Fulham, Newcastle, Forest have all signed no one too whereas they maybe would have taken a rogue cast off from a big six club and freed up someone to go to the Championship, in turn freeing up someone to come here. But I also think a lot of the reasons the big six aren't signing anyone can be applied to most teams thought process as well.

Yup FFP was in my mind as major factor in EPL, and if the top of the food chain is not eating then no crumbs falling of the table for others.

The one (Man City being one buyer) exception seems to be purchases from South America particularly Brasil where the transfer window is effectively their summer one and so they often need to buy young top talent in this window.

It does strike me that the Sky live transfer program is going to be like this next week :tumble::tumble::tumble::tumble:

Interesting point about the Brazil league. I never really clicked that was the case but it makes sense now when you consider a lot of "old heads" seems to move from Europe in January to go there. It has probably been a huge benefit to clubs needing to shift players mid season in that case.

:hide: What can I say - if your honest you know what i'm saying is true

you desire that slightly exotic fruit and convince yourself you can find the right one - even in not the best season

you hunt it down and convince yourself - despite the inflated price - that its going to be great and make the purchase

you get it home and and on closer inspection realise its far from ready and in fact a bit green

you wait what seems like an eternity hoping every day that today is the day it will be ready

patience wears thin and eventually you chuck it in the mix of your fruit salad regardless - only to be disappointed that it really is rather cack and makes it worse not better, further compounding the disappointment is remembering just how much you paid for it

Depends where you buy them from.
I got one today just down the road from Woolies for A$ 5-50 (that’s £2-75 to you)

You also have to take account of the fact that it might look exotic and taste wonderful in the warm Californian sun but when you drag it halfway across the world and look at it on a cold and wet February night in Ayrshire it might not look so appetising and more importantly it's unlikely to taste as sweet as it once seemed
