In Scotland we’re never sure what to expect. Many weekends are fine for football.
The OP was merely drawing our attention to the warning of bad weather for this particular forthcoming weekend.

Yip winter weather in Scotland tends to be un predictable.

I don't think the weather forecast is too bad for Dingwall. 4 degrees and 15mph winds forecast at kick off time is decent football weather. Even on Friday they seem to be avoiding the worst of the wind apart from a few hours in the evening so can't see any issues with stadium damage or whatever.
The high winds forecast for Friday seem to be mainly around the central belt albeit the weather warning covers a broader area, probably to discourage travel. There might be a few logistical issues for the team as they'll be travelling up the day before but the game itself will go ahead.

They may be right with this one but we decided not to travel to the Rangers game a couple of weeks ago due to an Amber weather warning for this area that didn’t materialise.

You hit the nail on the head ! Some of their warnings are over kill and lose their urgency.
Fed up with the Met Office in recent years, they no longer provide the BBC with their forecasts they are so poor.
They were hammered from all sides back when we had the snow in around 2011 that caused havoc. They were accused of not stressing the severity of the weather so they changed the system to the current impact based system with the colour coding. There were over 40 deaths attributed to that 2011 snowstorm. By contrast when the 'Beast from the East' came along in 2017 and the red weather warning had been issued well in advance there were 'only' 17 deaths despite the snowfall being worse, the temperature being colder and the event lasting longer.
I do think the current system is too broad now and the geographic areas covered are too wide. But looking at the weather forecast for tomorrow I can't see how it can be argued they didn't need to issue a warning. 60-80mph wind gusts in Edinburgh is not normal winter weather, it's dangerous. I generally don't pay too much attention to forecasts but I'll certainly be leaving the bike at home tomorrow and taking the bus instead and it's the warning that has alerted me to do that.

What interest do you think the Met Office have in exaggerating the seriousness of a weather warning? Or do you think its incompetence rather than conspiracy?
It doesn’t take much research to see that storms are increasing in strength and destructive power due to manmade climate change in Scotland and elsewhere. I can’t remember many recent storms where the base prediction for wind speed gusts is 80mph in the central belt like it is for tomorrow afternoon. Maybe up on a weather station in Islay or somewhere but not normally in Edinburgh area. Not sure it will affect the game or not but if the conversation is about ‘back in the day we just manned up and got on with it’, nothing could be further from the truth.

It's probably less the Met Office reporting, more the media increasingly love anything that has the potential for hysteria.
The BBC et al would throw up a live blog the second of the Queensferry Crossing cables had a minor gusty wobble.

Except it wasn't a light breeze.
On the day in question the winds were howling, as they had been in the days prior to Hogmanay. They relented a bit as the day went on, but it was obviously better to call the event off and give people adequate notice of this.
I'm no fan of Edinburgh's Hogmanay inconvenience but cancelling the event was the right decision.

Are you talking about 2010? That was when the snow arrived early - late Nov/early December and the buses were even cancelled for a few days. The snow was lying, hard-packed and frozen for almost a fortnight - even in the city centre. Worst I’ve seen in recent years. The Beast from the East time was much less severe.

Part of the reason why it's a red alert will be due to the time of day. Strongest winds are to be morning and afternoon when people are at work/school and the streets and roads are at their busiest.

My wife usually walks the bairns, I've said to her to take the car but tbh for half a day I might just say to stay at home. Would be good if the decision could be taken out of people's hands but I appreciate that can cause logistical issues for many in terms of childcare.
I've already made the decision to pull all my delivery drivers tomorrow. They want to go out and are giving it the 'it's only a bit wind' but no way am I having one of them off down the coast and one up to Aberdeen in those winds. The risk may be fairly minimal but frankly I don't want it on my conscience if anything does happen to them. They'll still get paid and the deliveries can go out on Monday.

What do you mean by pissing the bed? Do you have special information that the metereologists don’t have that says it won’t be windy tomorrow? Also, if you’re stillon about Hogmanay, the really dangerous winds which cancelled it were rattling around on the morning of the31st, and because people were gathering and barriers and signs were being ripped off and thrown around, it was dangerous and was rightly cancelled.irrelevant that the wind dropped later on.

Really dangerous?? Wind speed maxed out at 30mph in Edinburgh on 31st Dec and was well below that most of the day. If there was any risk it was minimal.

Of course there have been deaths working at heights before - it is by nature a risky occupation.
Re the Edinburgh Hogmonay Party - I would imagine it's a well enough paid gig with some top contractors involved. So yes - very surprising to see it called off due to winds in the 20-30mph range.

Easy to say with the beneft of hindsight. Meteorology is not an exact science, it's risk management in accordance with likely outcomes using tried and tested models. It's not a case of "oh it might be windy, lets cancel everything because we're *****bags".

Not talking about tomorrow as it looks like it’s going to be on a different level. But there is definitely an element of overreaction to these things these days in terms of the warnings issued. There has been more than one occasion just in the last couple of months alone where stuff has transpired to be nowhere near the level of warning and coverage it got.

80 mph winds in Edinburgh isn't a weekly or yearly think. The red warning will help put off bams that want their staff up scaffolding etc. It will also affect hibs fans that wanted to travel up on Friday so I think the thread is appropriate. If I wasn't interested in the thread I'd personally chose not to read or reply to it. There's threads on stuff like cricket that I'm not into, so I just don't click on them. I get what you are saying, but like everything, the public are getting what they clearly want. If folk are going to complain about the govt or weather services when there is bad weather on the way and they "didnt know" then these agencies have to react to that, and issue these warnings. If they dont, then folk will complain and make a fuss over it.

Well, I mean it's all to do with fairly reliable models they use, if there's a chance it could be worse than it turns out to be then they have a duty to inform the public and use the warning system, nothing is guaranteed when it comes to predicting the weather, sometimes it's bang on, other times it's well off the mark, that's the business they're in. People are completely free to ignore these warnings and go about their business as they see fit if they think they know better. However, if they're driving down the road and a roof tile flies through their windshield then folk like me are also free to laugh at them for ignoring the warning.

Yep.
We have become a culture of awareness of rights, which brings with it responsibilities. Imagine if there was no warning in place..... PB (as he mentioned above) sends his drivers out, unaware of the conditions. One of them comes to grief and (probably justifiably) sues his employer.
Having these in place protects everyone.... individuals, employers, authorities. Oh yeah, and insurance companies

Each to their own though of course
80mph winds in Edinburgh is a yearly thing now in fact its more frequent that we get 50mph plus winds now. They are happening more frequently.
These warnings havent stopped my employer saying we can choose to work but if we dont come in we won't get paid and as its based just outside south queensferry we all have to teavel so the warnings doesn't put the bams off!

We've been told to work from home tomorrow, and any teaching has to be moved online (a total PTSD throwback to lecturing during Covid, but a sensible decision).
Going to be challenging delivering a lecture with 2 kids running around the house like feral animals right enough! :greengrin
We've been working with the MetOffice on a few things recently and I've had a chance to see their models and systems for warnings first hand. If they've issued a red-warning, the data must be horrifying (and having seen their data on this storm, it is...).

Easy to say with the beneft of hindsight. Meteorology is not an exact science, it's risk management in accordance with likely outcomes using tried and tested models. It's not a case of "oh it might be windy, lets cancel everything because we're *****bags".
:agree:
You sometimes just have to make an early decision based on the available information at the time.
At Hogmanay the set up for the event was impacted by the weather and the forecast was for winds some way stronger than what actually transpired. Had the organisers and police liaised and then said 'all good, go ahead' and then 70mph winds rolled in forcing a cancellation at 9pm it would have been chaos and people would have been screaming it should have been decided earlier. Folk would already have been in town with nowhere to go and potentially limited means of getting home. I was in town when the event was cancelled at about 8 or 9pm way back in the mid 00s and it was madness. Folk scrapping with police, pubs barricading their doors etc etc. Aye they probably got it wrong this time around but based on what they knew at the time it was a sensible if ultimately wrong decision.
I'm being cautious tomorrow. It could be a mistake, the winds might be fine but it's hardly being a 'snowflake' or 'woke' or whatever other nonsense gets thrown about to put safety first in such circumstances.

I'm not sure when you were planning on driving up the A9. I'll be leaving Edinburgh around 10.00 knowing that the winds will be only around 15 mph and much less coming home.
Talking about tomorrow. We stay the Friday night for games up north. Breaks the journey and ensures at least part of the weekend is pleasant if we end up losing.

So met offices here have got it spot on this time in terms of when it would be at its strongest and speed down to 52mph. I think we’ve just experienced the peak….scary stuff.

Storms beginning to get bad here , electricity went off a couple of times and we haven’t had the worse of it yet . Stay indoors and keep safe folks :aok:
I know somebody that was meant to be going to a funeral this afternoon in Donegal, maybe Letterkenny? They had to pull out for medical reasons, but I suppose there's a good chance it might be cancelled anyway?

I have seen the pictures of the roofs blown off in Tranent and they are actually quite scary. Thankfully there doesn't appear to be any people injured.
They are relative new builds and I'm wondering if buildings aren't built as robustly as they used to be.
See comments about double glazing fitting - same apply to new builds - lots of corners cut. Engineer specifies wind restraint tie-down straps and amount of fixings. I have seen rafter straps with one nail across 3 trusses. The worst an entire 2 storey 6m high timber frame extension with no tie down straps at all to slab. Had to be almost completely rebuilt from outside after losing roof 2 previously in storms. all because of £500 worth of straps and half a days work when errected

From a sky sports Journo
Celtic Park has suffered some damage from #StormEowyn - putting tomorrow’s Scottish Premiership match against Dundee in doubt.
The club are working hard to ensure the game does go ahead, but a decision will be made in the morning.

Edinburgh tenement roofs ripped off.
I've seen this happen before. Think the wind gets in under the guttering and the whole thing peels off.

Might just be me but I find the idea of a football stadium being a victim so distasteful, when there will be people out there who will have lost homes.
Also **** rangers.

I've got half my roof tiles laying smashed in the garden. Not the only one, a few houses in the area missing tiles too. Neighbours garden fence is down. Next street up the roof is off the carports and has smashed into a few cars that are parked on the street.
Also supposed to snow here tonight so not great when I've a hole in my roof that I can't get too.

Agree, I work in relatively new build houses almost every week and the standard of workmanship is shocking.
It all comes down to subcontractors on a price. They get away with cutting corners so they make good money. Price work should be banned on new builds.
The biggest expense a person will make is buying a home. And the majority have been built by absolute cowboys.

This from a local farmer who has a contract to grit local roads in perthshire
❄️❄️Ok so ignore everything I said about roads seeming ok earlier! As we head towards daylight the roads are becoming awful, black ice everywhere. Especially bad coming downhill from Craigvrack towards town, the bridge corner at Atholl Palace and the road coming into town from Faskally end. Please, please be careful, and take your time until the local gritters have had a chance to get through.

The town hasn't got snow but higher up it's white. Black ice in places.

Dingwall forecast looks very good from what i am seeing however their pitch looked poor in recent Celtic game. Assume bad weather overnight no doubt won’t be same effort into a non tv game to get it on.

Am I right in saying that's it's not only the condition of the pitch that's taken into consideration? Road conditions, safety of fans and weather forecast are also considered I think.

So harsh. It’s the stadium that damaged not the pitch. Not much they can do about that.
