One of Scotland's greatest. RIP
Genuinely world class player. Lucky to have seen him play for Scotland a few times, lastly in Germany 1974. Sad to hear.
Probably a step too far in ‘74 which seemed more sentimental than practical but delighted to see him there nonetheless. RIP
Sad news, one of my hero's growing up RIP.

After the news of Haaland today what would Law, Charlton and Best be worth?

What a player, who could forget him holding the cuffs of his long sleeve shirt in his hands. Went to Italy with Joe Baker in early 60s.

Incredible footballer, irrepressible character in the true Scot's tradition and only Scot ever to be named European Footballer of the Year.
What a player, what a man. God Bless.
My generation, my age group an absolutely outstanding player, loved watching him. RIP

Sad news. I’ve always wondered why he didn’t win more Scottish caps? He’d be well clear of Dalglish as the top scorer.

Growing up Denis Law was always a bit of a joke figure to me because of his portyal on Only An Excuse. It was only as I got more interested in football history as I got older than I realised what a player he had been.
Legend and icon are often overused phrases but I think they most definitely fit here. RIP.

Missed him in his prime but a legend. His relegation of Man U playing for City was probably not his best memory but the professional in him shone.

I can't remember all of the rules now but IIRC caps weren't given for all international matches played and of course there weren't anywhere near the number of internationals played then as there is now.

When I was about 12 living near Aberdeen he said “a’right boys” to me and my brother outside the Banchory golf clubhouse while my Dad was inside buying us a juice. We were in awe, open mouthed and silent!

Loved Denis great character and an absolutely world class player. Can remember him getting emotional when talking about playing for Scotland. His goal for Man City to relegate Man Utd with a back flick was an iconic one. His time in Torino with Joe Baker was an experience for them both including surviving a serious car crash. Famously played golf when England won the World Cup. RIP the King.

For a period (might have been until as late as the late 60s/early 70s) Scotland only awarded caps for Home International matches.
A few years ago Alex Ferguson, Harry Hood and Alan Anderson were all retrospectively or posthumously awarded caps for appearances in other international appearances as they had never played in a home nations match.

They were dependent on results in other games which didn’t go their way however they didn’t know that at the time.

Everyone used to imitate Law in the playground with our shirtcuffs grasped in hand.
What I liked about Denis was that he worked as a straight football reporter after he retired. He would do the results roundup on ITV's The Big Match on a Sunday.

I remember one loudmouth on the night shouting that neither of them would do anything in the game.
A great player -seemed to hang in the air when heading and like a snake when striking. A sad loss of a seemingly very nice guy.

Gutted to hear the new of Denis passing. He was my football hero. Was taken by my dad to Wembley to see the England v Scotland game in 1967, saw him score, and idolised him ever since.
Denis wass desperate to get home after his year at Torino. The story went that he headed home to Aberdeen and refused to answer the phone to Torino who wanted him back. Sir Matt finally landed him for a record fee of £115,000 which realised a £5,000 profit for the Italian club. However, Juventus approached Torino and offered £160,000 for his services. Denis would have none of it and headed to Manchester United.
Denis once said that the tight catenaccio defences he faced in Italy prepared him well for the relative freedom he got from marking in England.
Denis could score goals from any height, any angle and had wonderful aerial ability. He was combative, dynamic and utterly deadly around the box - an instinctive finisher.
We will never see his like again.
Requiescat in pace, the great Denis Law.
