View Full Version : Starting to like David's press conferences?
and not just because our results were improving.
I actually can't articulate why. It's more of a feeling.
Can anyone out there who are starting to like our Head Coach's interviews put into words why?

Straight down the line honesty, protective of players, a quiet confidence and determination with a subtle undercurrent of dynamism.

And add in a bit of humour now that he isn't having to be as defensive

His interviews and press conferences have always been a strength. Even when we were rotten I didn't find myself getting irked by him in the same way I have others.
I think it's largely because he talks about the game in a way that is relatable to fans. He avoids the dour corporate speak of Jack Ross or the ridiculous analogies of Lee Johnson.
He's straight down the line. Doesn't chuck his players under the bus but let's fans know when he isn't happy and actually seems to answer the questions asked of him.

He's starting to smile, that makes a massive difference to how he comes across. He's also not a cringey rent-a-quote like we've had before. Instead, he keeps it simple and honest. I've just watched the Motherwell interview and he's starting to look comfortable in the role, which also changes how he comes across.

Honestly always liked them. Nothing but honesty from him and you can't help but admire that.
Add in that he’s just such a likeable guy and you can tell all the press like him as well.
Needs to chuck the ‘days rather than weeks’ line though! Haha.

I always like when you hear a manager speak that you feel like you’ve watched the same game as them, whether we’ve been good or bad. Our best have had this trait, our worst have lacked it.
That doesn’t mean throwing our players under the bus but a casual acknowledgment of good and bad times.
I feel we get that with Gray - at times we’ve been good, at times we’ve been very poor, at times we’ve been unlucky and he seems to read it right every time.
That’s why, even when we weren’t doing well, I’ve always found him good to listen to. There’s nothing like Hibs being poor, the manager talking drivel and you thinking “what’s this guy been watching” to undermine your faith in their ability to fix it.

Agree with the posters above, I find him relatable and honest (a far as managers go, they all lie and play the game to an extent). He’s never wildly off with his assessment of the games, takes responsibility and as someone with a keen interest in leadership topics, his huge strength is his consistency.
I can absolutely see why the players make a point of openly backing him, even when we were struggling for results.

He's always talked well, I liked listening to him even when I didn't think he was the man for the job.

I’ve always liked Gray’s interviews … bold statement maybe though for me he’s probably the best manager we have had in my time as a Hibs fan going as far back as Alex Miller doing interviews … thought Jack Ross spoke well too in fairness .

Gray is pretty honest and gives credit to the opposition where it's due.
Not many manage this.

The last few managers have all come across weirdly in different ways: I thought Ross was ok but Moloney (cringey one of the lads stuff when he arrived) Johnson (verbiage at times) and Montgomery (started well but it quickly became obvious he sounded like an automaton) all came across as false in different ways. DG sounds honest and open, fair and with more to say than he’s saying and I can see why if you were managed by him you’d want to raise your game. You couldn’t help but feel with the others that the players would be unconvinced.

I think SDG speaks really well. He's a likeable guy!
I've cringed a lot hearing some of our past managers speak. So, it's good to have one that talks a lot of sense, uses a minimum of words to get across his point and appears calm in delivering his message. Any employee would prefer that to one that talks a load of rubbish, loves the sound of their own voice and gets too aggressive when speaking. IMO of course.

He just makes sense. Honest assessments of games and now that results have improved they’re also more upbeat. Very happy for him.

Gray's an articulate guy and he talks sense. He's really growing into the role and seems a bit more relaxed being interviewed these days. Understandable, given the start he had and the contrast with form of the past couple of months. Long may it continue.

Probably the first manager/head coach since Lennon that I enjoy listening to. I liked listening to LJ too but not for the same reasons.

It's now understandable how well he came across when he got interviewed for the job.

As above, his honest appraisal of games and performance is refreshing.
I also liked a wee thing he done a few weeks back.
A lot of managers go on about club heritage, legacy style of play and historic expectation (look at Clement after their recent results).
But SDG said he made it clear to the squad, that regardless of how Hibs played in the past, how other fans expect us to perform post Christmas or even "Hibsing" it(he didn't actually say that, but alluded to it), he made it clear that this was their day. Today's result is what matters, not yesterday.
Reminded me of coaches in youth football, you go a goal down they shout out it's "nil-nil, we go again"
Maybe it's that attitude that has had us coming back in to games after going behind?
