The extent of these fires is unbelievable. My previous, probably ignorant, understanding was that previous fires were quite commonplace and contained, mainly in the less populous hills of California, wiping out and damaging rural properties. These recent fires seem to be so extensive and uncontrollable that they are wiping out whole towns and neighbourhoods.

Global warming might not have started the fires but it is definitely fanning the flames.

I was listening to the BBC World Service on my way home earlier and they reported that 90% of wildfires are started by arsonists. Humans are ****ing ****.

Just watched the news reports on this and it's totally mental.

Videos of formerly busy suburban areas that had me thinking of post war Hiroshima.

That’s exactly what came to my mind too. Was just describing the pictures to my son in the car.

Friend of mine who lives in the Palisades was over this week visiting. Flew back home yesterday expecting the worst as all the chat from neighbors were that the huge parts of the area he lives was gone. Somehow, the fire looks to have got to his back garden and split, unbelievably his property and the next door neighbors managed to stay safe. Horrific for everyone in the area but what a relief for him going home.

Unreal! What luck.

My mum's cousin lives just outside LA. She was badly impacted by the fires a couple of years ago but has been one of the lucky ones this time around, if the wind was blowing the other way it would have been a different story.

She shared a video this morning of her sitting watching the reports on the news then panning round and showing a firefighting plane scooping water from the lake that her property backs onto.

Due to how sprawling the greater metropolitan area of Los Angeles is, it’s sometimes hard to fathom how large and widespread these fires actually are from images/maps. The Independent last night was reporting the fires covering approximately 30,000 acres of land, to put that into context, that’s nearly half the official area of Edinburgh.

I found this quite interesting:

https://www.npr.org/2025/01/10/nx-s1-5254122/inmate-firefighters-california-wildfires

Nearly 800 prison inmates are helping to fight the fires for as little as $5.80 a day. They are trained, etc. I read another thing that said that despite them being trained, some of them are banned from actually becoming firefighters once they are released.

I don’t know if it’s because the scale of these things is just so hard to fathom but, without sounding insensitive, that doesn’t sound nearly as large an area as I expected.

Yeah I was thinking half of Scotland. Difference is the area is effecting rich people. Bairns are flattened in gaza and Ukraine and it gets less news this week

Was the report that Fonzy (Henry Winkler) commenting that he hoped the person responsible for setting one of the fires be “beaten beyond recognition” true or fake?

Was listening to a podcast today that said that the insurance companies could go bust over this and that the effect on the bond market could cause a massive global recession.[emoji51]

I mean, it is in absolutely nobody's interests for that to happen...

... but with Donald Trump having thoroughly obfuscated the links between cause and effect over the past few months, would there not be something mildly amusing about the start of his premiership being immediately marred by a slide into recession?

Nothing to do with him, already having a go at the firefighters for not putting the fire out, if the economy collapses, the wall isn't built or America isn't made great again, again it'll be their fault. Only good things will be claimed by the big orange guy.

I did wonder why he never just went to California and put the fires out himself. Maybe try a bit of bleach?

That's crazy talk. What he needs to do is invade Finland, where there are no reports/complaints of forest fires, and swap the populations of Finland and California.

Watching Trump and Musk (and who knows, probably Farage etc as well) try and blame everyone else would be pretty funny.

Finland Lyrics*by*Monty Python

Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I want to be
Pony trekking or camping
Or just watching TV
Finland, Finland, Finland
It's the country for me

You're so near to Russia
So far from Japan
Quite a long way from Cairo
Lots of miles from Vietnam

Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I want to be
Eating breakfast or dinner
Or snack lunch in the hall
Finland, Finland, Finland
Finland has it all

You're so sadly neglected
And often ignored
A poor second to Belgium
When going abroad

Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I quite want to be
Your mountains so lofty
Your treetops so tall
Finland, Finland, Finland
Finland has it all

Oh focus on Finland friends

Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I quite want to be
Your mountains so lofty
Your treetops so tall
Finland, Finland, Finland
Finland has it all, Finland has it all
