i think that's Erich Schaedler going over to remonstrate with the diver
i remember Erich having a cartoon picture of John Mcdonald on a wall in his boozer with a reference to him being an olympic swimmer :greengrin
was that Benny Brazil that gave the ball away in the first place

That was in Shades. The sticker was a Sport for all one with diving on it 😂

Somehow doesn't look as blatant as I remember it! Maybe it's the camera angle or simply because I've seen a lot worse since.

I was in the North Stand that day and there was absolutely no contact with McDonald.

Martin Boyle has made worse dives than that, along with countless others in our game.
Given how much of a talking point the McDonald dive was back then, it just shows you how much cheating goes on in football and the fact it’s become an acceptable part of the game and passed off as a skill of its own.
“Clever”, “enough contact there to go down” etc

Was in the enclosure with perfect view no contact at all.

Penalty to sevco, who needs VAR.
Couple of retakes if he misses as well.
Nasty little cheat MacDonald was. Privileged to have seen him halved at Easter Road by John Blackley(?) Or was it Shades?

It's as clear a dive as you will ever see.

There was no contact there. I'll bet Boyle has been denied far more penalties where a touch has genuinely taken him down or impeded him than he has got penalties where there was no contact. It was cheating then as it is now. McDonald was just an out and out cheat supported by the corrupt officials of the day. It was like Krystalllnacht with the Rangers buses after that game

I was sat on the benches in the old cave probably only 20 or so yards away and there was no contact at all. I'm sure Erich had to be dragged away from McDonald in the tunnel at the end of the game. Refs have cheated on their behalf for my entire life and it won't change even with VAR

I know. I remember watching it on Sportscene at the time. My uncle was in the main stand too and was incensed. Just pointing out that from that one snippet of footage (with no replay) filmed from the other side of the pitch you wouldn't be able to say 100% it was a dive.

Not sure I'd agree either you that Boyle has made worse dives but you're right about the way it's almost become a skill in today's game. The furore around the McDonald dive was because of its relative rarity circa 45 years ago.

What about that home strip. Yes please every time.
Funny how refs never got clued up on the John McDiver tactics...

We had plenty on here last week claiming the St J pen was a stonewaller 😂
The modern game is absolutely riddled with cheats, and folk have been indoctrinated to now believe that any contact is a foul - or indeed it’s acceptable to throw yourself to the deck with the slightest contact.
It’s a sad state of affairs, and VAR has only made this worse.
Sure there will be countless ‘soft’ fouls given today. Bleak stuff.
Ps - both goals scored in the OP clip are way beyond the skill level of most modern players (at the level of Hibs / huns anyway) too. But they can run further and dive better. Progress 👍

I remember writing to the SFA about it.
I pointed out there were several hundred John McDonalds in the phone directory so how did Rangers know it was their player being referred to.
Unless of course they suspected he was an actress after all.

It's amazing how McDonald's dive is still remembered with such bitterness!
That sort of thing is commonplace now and our players are as guilty as any others I'm sorry to say. Also feigning injury does my head in. The players now are fraudsters unfortunately and it's clear that attitude is manifesting itself in the way youngsters play too.

My dad was at the game with me my dad was a Referee and would defend refs to the hilt could not believe the ref awarded a penalty for that. There was also numerous decisions given in that game against us that he was at odds with. He commented that it was one of the worst refereeing performances he had ever seen.

Yes.I remember a worse Tommy McLean penalty. He was running into the penalty area with that funny leaning in style. Our man pulled a fast one and got out of his way and McLean fell over. Ref gave a penalty anyway which gave him a double whammy as he’d chalked off a goal for us a minute earlier.

We are capable of beating the old firm, especially der hun, but we will never, ever beat Scottish referees

It was far from commonplace then. You only saw it in European Games.

When both halves of the old firm went behind in games in those days it was commonplace to see them appealing for penalties, diving in the box etc.

Willie Miller refereed that game. That was the worst display of refereeing ever. I am sure that was the game that Miller committed a foul on Bobby Thomson that was a straight red an absolute shocker but was only booked as that Aberdeen players surrounded the ref as they did in those days.

There was a thread a couple of weeks ago about Aberdeen. I mentioned how I still dislike Aberdeen due to their behaviour and cheating in those days.
Saw myself in the enclosure in that clip! God, how handsome I was in those days.

To be fair to the ref, as Archie said in commentary, it was very difficult to see who handled the ball. Was it McLeish in the red Aberdeen top or McLeish in the green Hibs top?

I vaguely remember that game. The handball was a shocking decision but completely eclipsed by the offside. The Don's player actually crossed just behind the scorer well after the pass. Possibly the easiest ever offside decision to make. Back then Aberdeen got treated in a similar way to teh Huns with Miller refereeing games in a red top. One thing that is worth mentioning though is that even with the appalling standard of referees we have now we would have a pen and a goal through a VAR review. I must remember events like tehse, Griffiths free kick, Forster offside, Shaw over the line, retrospective reds every Derby and countless other decisions. It will remind me we would have got even less, if that is believable, from refs without VAR

Not sure if it’s still out there somewhere. But I remember many years after the game seeing footage from behind the goal that clearly showed there was absolutely zero contact. Clear daylight between the players.
IIRC Shades tried to go for the wee p**ck on the park, in the tunnel at the end. And I’m also told he tried to get on the stickies team bus to have a pop.
I also remember it kicking off in the East terrace. Think it was the Union Jack branch that were in the Hibs end. Maybe 50-100 of them celebrating then getting set about. My abiding memory was, as the polis got it under control and the fans cleared away, a few of them k.o.’d and 1 particular sticky (who looked like the poster child from some sort of early 70’s wannabe u.d.a. advert) staggering about covered in blood whining ‘fenian bast**ds’.
