Watched this two-parter the other night. There's no current day input from Ferguson, it's all archive footage from him, but it's shaped around present-day interviews with his former players, staff and journalists (with Hugh MacDonald positioning himself as a current day McIlvanney).

What really comes through strong is his relentless mindset. Yes, celebrate the wins but the next day you go again, and again, and again. No let-up whatsoever. To maintain that over 30+ years in management is what marks him out as the greatest IMO. His players clearly bought into that winning mentality and it would be great if SDG could instill that in his Hibs squad. For so many clubs, a short spell of success is all too quickly followed by longer spells of mediocrity/rubbish and it still rankles with me how relatively quickly we fell away again after the ultimate high of the Scottish Cup win. The gulf between the OF and the rest means we'll never be able to emulate what Aberdeen achieved in the 80s (let alone Man United) but ours is a club which nevertheless retains the potential to be much more consistently successful.

Horrible player, still remember he broke Alex Cropley's leg, his only redeeming feature for me was having Pat Stanton as his number 2 at the sheep. Great record as a manager for Muncaster united right enough, pity he could not do same for Scotland.

the post match interview after the 1983 Scottish Final said it all.

just days after conquering Real Madrid in Gothenburg, a 1-0 triumph over Rangers at Hampden wasn't good enough for him. He wanted to grind Rangers into dust. Relentlessly high standards.

What Aberdeen would give for a scrappy 1-0 win against Rangers in a Scottish Cup Final now.

He only agreed to take the job on a temporary basis out of respect for Jock Stein. Scotland played well at that 86 World Cup in a very tough group.

I'd argue that what he achieved at Aberdeen was every bit as extraordinary as what he did for Man U. Kenny Dalglish reckons that winning a European trophy for the sheep was Ferguson's greatest achievement.

I think I read somewhere that Ferguson was offered the Scotland job but he wanted full control of the whole pyramid system of coaching from schools, youth right throughout the SFA system
The blazers would not sanction and 5 months later he is at old Trafford

No, it was a broken ankle. He broke his leg when at Arsenal.

He didn't want the job and was adamant it was just for the World Cup after Stein's death. He relished the day to day hands-on experience of club football too much. An international boss's role can be very dull for much of the time. McLeish admitted as much when he left the Scotland job for Birmingham City.

Greatest manager in football history.

Guardiola is over-rated in my book - he inherited a team fuelled by La Masia’s greatest ever batch, followed by Germany and Englands most money-rich sides. Ferguson has shown he can bring countless teams through transitional periods, Guardiola currently proving he can’t.

Think it might have been while Ferguson was playing for Falkirk but I could be wrong. He was actually a good striker who scored of goals for every club he played for. Made a scapegoat at Rangers for a heavy cup final defeat to Celtic but the suspicion was that the club wanted rid of him because he'd married a Catholic.

Ha,ha apologise from me then, just a wind up, but he was playing for Falkirk at the time I think, and yes he scored a fair amount of goals, elbows fergie they used to call him, he was a dirty player, and Cropley was just a young player making his mark in the game. Fergie knew what he was doing.

"Bob Shankly gave Alex his debut just after his 18th birthday, but it was under the tutelage of Eddie Turnbull that he produced his top form.
Unfortunately his career was held back following a broken ankle suffered in a challenge by Falkirk’s Alex Ferguson at Brockville, an incident which according to reports resulted in Eddie Turnbull refusing to speak to Ferguson again.
The injury meant that Alex missed the 1972 Scottish Cup final defeat to Jock Stein’s Celtic, but he was in the team that gained revenge a few months later, winning the Drybrough Cup 5-3 then the League Cup 2-1 and the Drybrough Cup again 1-0, all against Celtic and all at Hampden within the space of a year." Ferguson was sent of in that game 1974 but not for that tackle.

I read a quote from Cropley (maybe in his book) , where he said that Turnbull never spoke to Ferguson again, after that tackle.

Them youngsters don't know the half of it Crops, even after his ankle break he was a magnificent player, both in Scotland and in England.

He's in with a shout but for me the best manager of all time has to be König Otto Rehhagel.

Took the provincial team Werder Bremen to 2 Bundesliga titles, 4 x runner-up, 1 European Cup Winners Cup, 2 cup wins with Bremen and 1 with Fortuna Düsseldorf (who?), dragged Kaiserslautern out of the German 2nd division and won the Bundesliga with them at the first attempt directly after being promoted and won the Euros with a bang average Greek team in 2004.

It's relatively easy to be a successful trainer with teams like Manchester United, Barcelona or Bayern Munich, less so with the likes of Aberdeen, Bremen or a national team like Greece.

All of course in my opinion.

Not relatively easy at all. Look at Man Utd and the countless managers that have failed since Fergie. It’s arguably harder at a team where the expectations are so high, especially if you need to rebuild.

5 European Cups plus 2 as a player 5 domestic titles in different European countries three Club World Cups five Super Cups plus countless domestic leagues and cups just been named FIFA Coach of the year 2024

They'd been also-rans in the league for many years prior to Ferguson's arrival, even getting relegated in the mid-70s.

The key, though, to his stunning success was the club holding their nerve and not sacking him in his early years there.

Spoke to a guy who played centre half for Motherwell against Alex Ferguson, Fergie left one on him in early in the game, he then left one on Fergie later in the game to get him back. The next corner kick the Motherwell centre half felt something wet on his neck Fergie had spat at him.
What a manager though, but was a dirty b as a player, you had to be tough in those days though.

Rangers wanted to include Fergie in the Colin Stein transfer but he refused to move and we got the great Joe McBride instead.

At Pat's 75th birthday event at the Usher Hall, Fergie turned up and the pair shared many stories of their time at Aberdeen.

Pat, Fergie and one other actually shared a room in a bed and breakfast when they first started

Pat recalled a time when he asked Fergie if he fancied a pint but he refused because he had given his last tenner to Stevie Archibald whose wife needed it for groceries.

Changed days for both of them. Different world back then.

Fergie got involved in an altercation with Big Bad John McNamee in a St Johnstone v Celtic Reserve Game at Muirton Park

Surrounded by players from both sides and the safety of the Referee and not wanting to back down from the colossus that was McNamee Fergie said he would see him after the game no problem

After his shower a teammate told him there was someone waiting to see him Thinking it was a pal Fergie looked around the door only to see Big Bad John suited and booted waiting for him

Discretion being the better part of valour Fergie remained in the changing room slowly getting ready and combing his hair until he heard the Celtic team bus revving up and driving away

No one messed with John McNamee

Find it fascinating the amount of great managers who came from Scotland in that period. The environment of the time really moulded these guys and it is all extremely interesting. What he achieved at MU is just incredible to repeatedly build new sides and take on every new manager who appeared like Wenger and mourinho. We’ll never see another like him again. Find the psychology of it all interesting

Guessing this is a different one to the one a year or so ago done by his Son? If so, I'll give it a watch.

Mental how many good Scottish managers there's been eh? Also mental that not a single English manager has won the English Premier League! No wonder their national team went for Tuchel.
