I think it took three games before the Aberdeen one for us to have roughly around the same amount shots and about six games to score six goals ..

I think at this moment in time we are sixth for goals scored in the league and even though they have games in hand we have one more scored than Sevco at this point too .

From looking pretty poor in a attacking sense for weeks the last two games I think we have looked a lot more threatening…

What’s the reason or reasons behind this? ..

Two things - the change in shape and the change in attitude.

When players have “clear the air” talks it can go one of two ways and there are enough experienced professionals at the club that I trust they would be frank but constructive. Newell, Gayle, Boyle for three.

It looks as if we’ve gotten our heads together and gotten out of the funk we were in. That’s massive.

Ekpiteta’s injury forcing Gray to change the shape. Worrying that it was an injury that forced it rather than our manager seeing that the change suited us better.

Many people been saying it for weeks!

It's easier to score goals from shots on goal when playing more direct and getting at the opposition box with ball at feet. Previously we were wasting too much time on the ball making needless additional passes which allowed opposition defences to get organized and limit us to half chances. We never gave Motherwell a chance to organize their defence because we were so quick up the park when we had possession of the ball, we didn't piss around in possession and that makes all the difference.

I agree I think the change in shape has helped massively. I think it keeps us having bodies in all areas of the park versus before we could look very isolated in almost every department, especially going forward.

Got to wonder why Gray was so reluctant to change. Took injuries for it to happen. Big difference thankfully.

It’s a really weird one. He played it pre season and spoke about how we would change it at times and seemed to recruit players who suit playing it

Important thing is he’s done it now and we look better

It wasn’t really because of his injury he changed it, he still started with a back four at Dundee, minus Ekpiteta.

He should have changed it ages ago, he’s just realised that belatedly.

I think the shape is one alright . I do wonder just how much a lift the team’s morale and confidence got with Rocky’s late equaliser too .

Difference having a “specialty” player in Cadden. Set pieces and crossing creates chances on their own.

Persisted with Boyle on set piece for far too long. Without going into a mad debate and rewriting history - it’s one of the reasons I always wanted Stevie Mallon in the team. Will create/score 20 odd goals a season just because he can kick a football correctly

Another 2 “assists” for Cadden today (ok he won’t get the 2nd but a great ball in)

Yep. We hadn’t been playing too badly. Mistakes and red cards are not going to go on forever. The shape has been small part of it. We’ve picked up a bit of confidence and some things have gone our way.

I really like Gayle today - his work for the third was fantastic.

Yep 352 seems to suit us. Gives better solidity at the back and more central forward players plus Hoilett behind

More variety in our attacks and more players further up the park when we are attacking. Youan and Nicky Cadden have made the biggest difference individually.

Iredale getting fully fit is a factor. We couldn't play 3 right footed CBs. Not sure why it took so long for him to get up to speed mind you but it looks sorted now.

White shorts. You can see us from space in these (or the Fir Park top tier, which is the same).

I'm not sure it was Ek's injury? seems to me it was more Obitas sending off given we don't have another natural left back...otherwise Rocky can just slot in for Ek without changing shape?

Considering after we were forced to change a due to injuries up at Tannadice when we played very well indeed up until Newell sold the jerseys and got sent off , I thought we would’ve seen it long before now.

Yeah I suppose it’s a combination of both. No idea why it took Gray so long when plenty people could see it long before he did.

Can he turn that 1 win in 14 into 1 loss in 14. That’s the kind of run he needs imo.

I think it was more Obita suspension that forced the change of shape

:top marksMost of the teams in our league are not good enough to defend at the best of times, but if you give them time to all get back into position, then you give them a better chance to do so.

For far too long we've farted about with the ball between Newell and the back 4, passing it between themselves for a bit before running out of ideas and lumping it forward.

Getting the ball forward earlier and pressing does work when playing against lesser players, trying to play like 70's Brazil DOES NOT work if you have 2024 Hibs players.

Until we get better players, lets play to our strengths.

Said for a while that the 4-2-3-1 shape works if you have high pressing but it too often reverts to a negative 4-5-1 with the striker being isolated.

How many times have we seen mediocre teams come to Easter road and dominate the play.

The change in shape has good flexibility for one winger to go higher and one to sit and still keep it a back four looking when required obviously.

Also with two up front and the number 10 in behind it naturally cuts out some passing lanes from opponents defence to their holding midfielder.

Some people say formations don’t matter it’s the 21st century and tactics is everything. Hibs have been very unlucky in a number of games. I’d much rather see Hibs score 3 concede 2 and win rather than try and nullify an opponent.

This formation looks good and as another thread points out the amount of chances we have created is very encouraging

3 points this Saturday 😄

Many people been saying it for weeks! When's SDG got injured and Lennon put Boyle at wingback it was similar. Something had to change and he had tried most combinations of players in his chosen formation
